Budget Scandis (Moras,Brusletto,Marttiini pics)

Bear, have you tried a Hultafors???

You have a beautiful lady Bear.

Here are my Moras
In order 510, 780, and clipper (carbon)
MoraKnives.jpg

Wow, those are the three I'm choosing between right now. I have a 760MG at the moment, but don't really like stainless.

Which do you guys recommend? I was leaning towards the 780, but everyone really seems to like the 510, and I've heard good things about the clipper too.

I would get the 510, the handle is perfect and the blade is just the right size. Ive had about 15 moras and the 510 and SL-1 are my favorite. My tryflex 780 gets the most use though. I didnt like the clipper at all.

Why does the triflex get the most use if the 510 is your favorite?

And on a related note, are the triflex blades really that much better than the normal carbon steel ones?

k-spar, I think you'll like either the 510 or 780. I don't have any experience with the 780 other than messing around a little bit today with the one I got yesterday, but I like it a lot so far. What swayed me to the 780 was the lanyard hole. If it matters to you (to me it did not), the 510 has a longer tang in the handle. I'm probably going to order a couple 510's or, more likely the 511's, for the kids later since the grip is smaller. Heck, for the price, get both!! :)

It is a sharp, cold day in KS. :)

It does my old heart good to see this many people who have come to appreciate what excellent, useful, and generally inexpensive knives these Moras and some of the other Scandinavian knives are. My feelings about some of the ungodly high priced knives that some folks set such great store by would make them mad if I was any more outspoken about them than I am. Oh well, to each his own I guess. Blowing wheelbarrow loads of cash on knives beats hanging out in bars, chasing strange women, using illegal drugs, and buying a new vehicle every couple of years. I'm happy as a goat with my less costly cutlery, though.

Alright thanks, I think I'll get the 780... it is the same as what I have now but with a better blade... And I can make it fit in the sheath I made before.

Amen, Brother!

I love my 780 and 510. The 780 was the first mora I got and I have no complaints about it. It holds a great edge and it's easy to sharpen. The 510 is great for an all around knife and i think it's going to replace the spot for the 780. (Then again moras are so light I can stick both in my pack.) I haven't got the chance to use it much as I like this year. Besides kitchen duty, fuzzy sticks for the fire pit, and light wood carving, it hasn't seen much dirt time. I'm thinking about getting another clipper for my dad, since he always reaches for mine when we camp.

Now I have a queastion for you guys. How does everyone like their mora 2000? I'm thinking about getting one soon, since all I have is carbon steel knives.

Get one! I have two. Nothing cuts like a M2k. Take my word for it.

Has anyone tried either the C-223 or C-173 moras? I'm wondering if they would work decently as a budget chopper. I've decided to try out the big knife school of thought, but i don't wanna shell out for a busse.

Here are the pics from Ragnar's site... I'm worried these might be too thin.

I have lots of Moras, and they will always be great knives for what they cost, but after receiving my Hultafors Grovknivs(heavy dutys) the Moras took a back seat immediately. Any of you considering buying a Mora should definitely look at these Hultafors knives. The best description I have heard of them yet is that they are like Moras on steroids, and that pretty much somes them up. Heck, they even cost within a buck or two of the Mora knives.

I guess I will be a voice of dissent here. I find I much prefer my carbon SWAK (740-MG) to my Mora 2000. I just don't like the Mora 2000 as much and I definitely don't feel it is worth 3x the price of the SWAK.

I have two 780s on the way; one for me and one for a Christmas present. These things are addicting. :)

Here is a good Mora combo.

Served me well in the jungles of Peru and mountains in CA.

I have the C-223. It is DEFINITELY too light to be a chopper. Mine sits in a drawer unused. I guess it would be fine as a light machete for light grasses, but that's about it.
