What would you pick to be an urban survival bug out machine? Here's the reqs... Comfortably seats 2 people and personal equipment, 3 uncomfortably. The engine block, gas tank, door panels, roof, and radiator must be armored (1/2" steel or Spectra). Level IIIa glass all around. Police type reinforced bumper or better for front and back. A moonroof is a plus but must be armored as well and be hinged so it opens up and out (front) to possibly be used as a firing port. Tires have to be runflats. For all the weight a turbo or supercharger will probably be necessary.

The purpose would be as a getaway vehicle to be used when the shite hits the fan. Something fast and tough, capable of slamming through cars/roadblocks.

ok...your armor pre req's need to be changed...not even the military has all its vehicles up armored...

lets be realistic here...

for me...
6x6 5 ton with multifuel and hardbox on back. think command and control truck...

or this....

What would be reasonable armor for what I have in mind?

I'm going for something like the Mustang from Cherry 2000 but with some sort of armor.

is this fantasy or real probability?

why not something that every joe can make or afford.

like a mil issue 80 chevy blazer with a homemade brush gaurd....and flak jackets lining the doors....

the whole idea for me of the EOTWSHTF BOB truck/vehicle is its a surprise and you gotta go now.

how many of us can afford a $500,000 bearcat?

Two motorcycles; something like Kawasaki's KLR 650's...seriously. In an urban escape situation, traffic will be way to crowded to plow through and the weight of all that armor will seriously impeded any off-road maneuvering; as soon as you bust through a major roadblock, make sure you're ready to bug out on foot:eek: We up-armored several of our HMMWV's in Iraq and the weight was unbelievable and the stress on the suspension (even after upgraded) was way too much. A couple of motorcycles could really get you out of tight spots and through terrain most 4X's wouldn't make it. Another option is a compact 4X with a good brushguard...keep it light, fast and maneuverable (and it would get much better gas mileage as well). Escaping urbania during a major crisis is going to be nearly impossible if you attempt when the masses are all gunning for the hills. Best advice is to leave early or hunker down until the masses exterminate themselves and if the government doesn't come in to save you, you could E&E with a much less crowded environment, but probably just as or more hostile...just make sure you have a plan and place to evac to.

They wouldn't let us do that to ours. I was in Mosul with HHC Mortars 1-502 INF from 7-03 to 2-04. We had ours set up in the bench seat config. Then again, I deployed with a suicide vest. I had to borrow IBA's for the first half of my tour.

I'll take this one.

Forget the armor, take to the air like the Gyro Captain in the Road Warrior movie. A gyro copter is fast, can take off and land in less than 10 feet of dirt road, can carry a decent load and has better mileage than most trucks or SUV's. No special licenses needed, just a basic PPL with a couple of hours of gyro copter certification. Better than getting a motorcycle license for the missus.

Yeah, we had a company in Mosul this past rotation (O6-08) and it was still a pretty dangerous place. I like the idea of the Blazer and you could probably dig up some cheap "suicide" vests to use as internal armor...not perfect, but I doubt IED's will be used in LA initially:D.

Yeah, it wouldn't work for me either, but for the lone wolf or young couple, it's a good option; you just can't carry a couple 100 pounds of equipment with you and you have less protection. It really depends on the location and situation, but a good bike could get you out in a hurry if you needed to.

Fuckin IED's... I still have nightmares about an IED detail we were on. They wanted us to literally kick bushes and roadside shit looking for these bastards. Staggered colomn, 50 meter interval ... WTF, over?

Yeah, that's about when you tell someone to stick that order where the sun don't shine, they tried telling me my squad was gonna do an IED sweep before the abrams with mine sweepers showed up.

I was a mere PFC, not much I could do about except say Roger that!

LMAO!! We used to say the same things bout them boys.:D

We were called track grease by the tankers though, so we had to pick on somebody, and the Navy was too easy.:D

Hardcore is when it's a month long detail, every morning between 0300 and 0600

My BOV is an 82 4X4 Diesel Suburben... 20 MPG x 40 gallon tank = 800 mile range before looking for fuel. It is compatible with Military Hummers for engine parts, wheels and tires etc.. No computer controls= EMP proof also. The Diesel Burbans are hard to find, but Mil surplus Blazers are pretty much the same and are fairly easy to find and can be dirt cheap.
