Bug out vehicle

I've always thought the ultimate in bug out vehicles is a Pinzgauer . It's the size of a VW bus, can go pretty much anywhere (13 inches of ground clearance with a full payload) and carry over a ton. It has an air-cooled motor so that's one less thing to go wrong.

I think the Unimog runs a close second. It's bigger than the Pinzgauer though.

There are a couple of places in the US that sell nice surplus models, the going rate is around $16k for the Pinzgauer 4x4 (the 6x6 is a lot more expensive) and around $13k for the Unimog.

I guess my "BOV" would also be my toy. A '91 Jeep YJ with a 4.0, and a set of smallish Super Swamper TSL's. The project for this winter is a 2.5" lift and an Aussie locker. Once I get around to converting the rear axle from the Dana 35 to a Ford 8.8 or a Dana 44 I can get serious about a selectable locker for the rear.

Sometime in the next couple of years the wife and I are both wanting a couple decent 4 wheelers. Yamaha Big Bears or something. Definitely mid size, not them thousand something CC things that are damn near as heavy as my Jeep and five times as expensive.

Of course, my BOV is mainly for when I get home from Prudhoe and need to go hunting or fishing ASAP.:D

If I were dead serious on the matter I would consider a Uni-Mog.

Forget armor...too heavy and expensive. I'm takin my 99 stock Chevy Silverado. It will do anything I need it to to bug out...

+1000 My neighbor has a pinzgauer and its the ultimate ATV. There are lots of videos on youtube of a pinz doign things that would make a hummer wince. Its got a crazy payload, is fantastic off road, come in 4x4 or 6x6 and looks wicked.

84 Bronco XLT
Beefed up 302 (as much as I cab beef it up with Cali's F'd up smog laws)
NO CHIPS as far as I know
Carburetor, not FI

I would post a pic
But, I'm embarrassed about the Ford Feces Brown paint job
I'm gonna paint it flat black with a whip antenna
Like the military Blazers
I am using the "bad guy" trucks from The A-Team as my model.....

I have a 2005 Ural that could make a fair bugout machine. It is basically a mil-spec, Russian motorcycle/sidecar rig based copied from a WWII German design. It is super low-tech and pretty close to being all-terrain. Some versions (not mine) have engagable 2WD, camo paint, jerry cans, and even a machinegun mount. DO a search for the Ural Gear Up.

I got mine just for fun, but if I had to leave home in an emergency, I'd consider it.

This is my bug-out vehicle:

Well... hmmm. If it was just me, well I would pick a decent Motorcycle.. ior just me and the wife. But I have a real hard time thinking that with Kids, it is a good idea to split into two groups (one adult, one child per bike). And impossible to take the dogs.

If I had my choice of realistic BOV, I would likely pick a Jeep Rubicon+trailer. I have always (up until now) owned CJ/YJ's and used them all the time on and off road, and to me there is something "comfortable" in knowing what I am driving and what it CAN and CAN'T do.

Given that I currently don't own a Jeep, my BOV is my 1998 Dodge Durango. Does everything I need it to, carries all I need it too. Runs clean and strong, under 100k on it. And it blends in nicely because there are so many of them in my area. Does ok on backroads, logging trails, thou i wouldnt take it into heavy off roading in the stock form. Only realy mods I have done was add a cargo rack, and replaced the ball joints (known weak spot on Durango's) with aftermarket ones, added a reciever hitch/trailer package, and larger gas tank. Has 31/10's all around and as a spare. Will be adding a push bar at some point, when my cash flow is a bit better then it is today.

Sorry no armor plating or bullet proof glass... :/

Its not fancy its not 4WD but it been in the desert drove it on the beach in the sand. Was the only car that would get out from the desert after some heavy summer rain and the sand turned into heavy clay.. Jeeps and other trucks just dug all 4 wheels into it ... The VW just stayed on top of it all...

Now if i could get my hands on the late 80's suzuki samorai... There something about light weight. The Problem is that the car is a great thing as long as we got the gas to run it.

I would be worried about fuel consumption over protection, I can garuentee someones gonna get to the gas station befor you. Keeping your tank filled is the key, get the hell outa dogde will be my plan.

I have a 4x4 but you know, I have been seriously thinking that a big 4x4 is not very useful to me as a BOV...my motorcycle is probably a much better option. I think if I ever needed to bug out most of the city would be thinking the same thing, and 4x4 is really not helpful in terms of sitting in a fifty-mile long traffic jam. I would probably be better off in a Toyota Corolla with a couple of big jerry cans in the back.

For the long-term, I'd love to have a sturdy mountain bike with racks for panniers. No suspension or ultra-lightweight parts, just something that could carry me quietly over hill and dale for miles and miles. Easy to stash, can carry a good deal of stuff and no gasoline to worry about. You could even carry or push it if the terrain got too rough.
