burf_151 - Backed out of knife deal

On Sept. 1st at 5:06PM, I sent an e-mail to burf stating I was interested, and asking for more pictures.

He replied back on Sept. 2nd at 7:12AM stating.

I replied back on Sept. 3rd confirming it was ok to pay, as I saw another user post his interest.

He replied back shortly after stating he gave it to the other individual.

He was cordial, but for being an "established" member, seemed like pretty shady behavior.

You know, there's a vital piece of info missing here. Did the seller's reply on the 2nd contain payment info? If so, volcomgnu should have just paid.

However, there's also this discrepancy. On the 1st, there was an "I'll take it" post, but there was also an "I'm interested" email with a request for more pictures. Those two missives send two very different messages. I suppose the order could make a slight difference, but there's a lot that doesn't add up here.

ETA: The "I'll take it" was at 4:05 pm. Sounds to me like volcomgnu effectively changed his tune in the email.

We see so many threads like this from new people. Seems a lot of the problems could be headed off if there were a post limit before they could purchase items. It would establish the person better, be less likely to be someone who is not forthright and give {said individual} the time to read up more on the rules and forum etiquette before attempting to make a purchase.

Sorry just a random thought unrelated to this exact thread.

Hey guys, I just saw this thread. The OP posted "I'll take it", and asked for pics, and my PP addy. I replied. He did not pay, nor did he reply until the next day. In the meantime, member here steeldragon sent me a PM. He said that volcomgnu had backed out of buying a knife from him after he said he would take it. That, coupled with the OP's lack of feedback or posting here made me uneasy. So, I decided to sell to the next in line, who has good feedback here. I emailed the OP and told him such. If it was out of line, I apologize. But, my gut told me to go with the known buyer.

In my mind this explanation makes this a somewhat different situation. In my opinion, the seller deserves the right to refuse and, if the seller so chooses, is not bound to honor the first "I'll take it" that comes along if he does not feel comfortable doing so. However, I think it is better if the sale thread contains something along the lines of "Seller reserves the right to refuse sale...etc...etc"

This sounds like a miscommunication coupled with a lack of experience concerning our purchasing practices here on BF.

No money changed hands and no knife was shipped. So this is really not a GBU worthy post. I suggest the OP try again with the benefit of this experience to guide him.

Speaking for myself when I say " I'll Take It" I always tell the buyer that I will pay within 12 hours. Living on the other side of the planet there is a time change and I don't want to wait up the whole night for the seller to get back to me. No seller has ever refused to complete a transaction with me because I asked them to wait 12 hours for payment . The key thing is to COMMUNICATE all relevant information so both seller and buyer know where they stand.

While I don't sell many knives, I've sold quite a few guns and related items on other sites. I always say that an "I'll take it" trumps ANY and I do mean ANY expressions of interest. I may agree to "hold" an item for a potential buyer based on circumstances but that would be my call. "I'm really interested", "I think I'm going to buy it", or even something like the ambiguous "I'll take it but send me some more pics" is not an "I'll take it". As stated above, the next process after the initial "I'll take it" is arranging and completing payment in a timely manner.

What’s funny is- some one joins a well-established forum and the next day wants to tell the members how it should be run.

Basically 2 strikes:

1) Not paying after stating they’ll Buy It.
2) Posting a complaint about a transaction that never occurred.

I’m glad the OP spoke up so I can avoid dealing with them.

As Bernard Levine once said- You have 2 ears and one mouth for a reason.

IMHO- burf151 did absolutely nothing wrong.

If anything was done wrong it was the lack of communication from the disgruntled buyer.

Based on the info now known, I too would have sold to the number 2 in line.

Sorry but I am really leary of selling to newbies, especially if the next in line is an established paying member.............................................

I would have done the same thing. Saying "Ill take it" around here isn't just a term to toss around lightly because you want something held. Once you say that and don't mean it that can cause the seller to lose other sales for the item you back out on and they're left high and dry.
