Bush bash pics

I had a really awsome time. This is a great group of people. I'd love to hang out with you guys again anytime. I can't wait for the next one!

DWK, I just realized I forgot my lantern and chair. If you can bring them to the next gathering that would be great. If not, then you can keep them. I have a bunch more of those chairs and don't really use the lantern. Thanks!

Ray,

I loved those big boys you brought. Some bad ass steel!

[Post #36 on the prior page I mentioned the chair & lantern and noted I'd be happy to bring them to the next gathering. I'm glad to help.]

Looks like you guys had a great time. Lots of pics! Even scored some fatwood. Must be nice putting faces to the names. So, who actually ate some of the grub? :D

Sasha ate half the grub, C Bryant and Sasha's nephew tasted a little.

Yea i did eat half of it and the other grub was droped into the fire by mistake. I wish i took pics of it.. I wonder what Grub was it. Just to let you guys know, It did taste good. Was sort of smoky nutty flavor. The skin was more on the chowy side. But if it was fryed properly after cooked over the fire for a few min I would actualy pay to eat it. I had some other bugs before and this one is was good compare to others. Been all over the net trying to figure out what was it. So maybe i could go look for them to bring over for Bush Bash II.
The worst part about the camping trip were the knifes. Now im thinking maybe i do Need a nice knife, Just one no more. But there were so many that i like for one reason or the other. Never thought of my self as a knife nut like most of you.... But now im thinking about a few of them.
Andy we had enough fun to start talking about bush bash II and bush bash III. That should speak for it self.

Yeah, if the grub was fried it would have been a lot better. Not to say that it tasted bad the way it was. I ate a little tiny piece but it was more of a texture thing with me, not taste. It did have a nice smokey nutty flavor, but I had a tough time getting past the texture of it. The ouside was fine, almost like fish meat, but the inside was still a bit gooey...and I have a tough time with gooey. Granted if I was starving it would have like eating a steak!

I had a great time for the short time that I was there, I wish I could have spent the night.

The fatwood was found after I left. That is some good fatwood, I'm going to have to get some next time I am up there.

If you guys were willing to try the grubs, why didn't you cook up some of those newts?

OMG, I hope my wife doesn't see this...:barf:

I don't know how well that would go over, those newts are poisonous. I don't know how poisonous, or if it would be "cooked" off, but I would want to take the chance.

it was great meeting you and Ian, John... that dude is a crack shot with that shotgun... maybe next time you folks could stay longer....

many thanks once again for the scones...:D they were delicious...

Stingray,

Some of the articles indicate it's the same basic toxin as pufferfish. However, the articles said they taste so nasty and induce vomiting so quickly that few people can keep a newt down long enough for the toxin to kill them.

that is what i always heard as well... that is their defense mechanism... they usually don't get messed with because of it....

I had my Ecology professor (total frog guy...) tell me that was a guy up in Oregon not too long ago that died from eating a Newt I believe it was that specie too, really wouldn't recommend it! :)
That trip looked like a blast though!

Well, it is a pretty safe rule of thumb not to eat or mess with anything who's natural color doesn't blend in it's surroundings. If it is in the woods and is bright orange..... might want to skip it. :)

The kids will remeber this weekend all their lives! Great time for them.

I've always wanted to buy a longbow....... any suggestions for me Mike?

thanks man... hopefully there will be many more to come...:) we spend a lot of time in the woods and camp regularly... my boys love it....

as for longbows.. there are a lot of factors involved when buying a first trad. bow... check out www.3riverarchery.com or the classifieds over at www.tradgang.com
i am more than willing to help you out and get a little more in depth.. drop me an email....

for starters, you should look into, "The Traditional Bowhunters Handbook", by T.J. Conrads.. it is a great book filled with tons of useful information, for archers of all skill levels... 3rivers should have it...

Mike,

Thank the missus again for the supercharged java. It was really tasty and kept my eyes wide open all morning. I'll take it over a grub or newt any day!:D
