I usually do not like to speculate on these kinds of things, but it could be possible that the company wrote it into the sales contract, no liability clause?
Well with that much wood they would have to know if it was stabilized or not. And if they sold it as stabilized when it was not that was a pretty crappy thing to do and they should be held accountable. Spalted wood is basically partially rotten. The black lines are formed from a fungus growing through the wood and I'm sure starting to break it down. Spalted wood has to be stabilized for it to hold up long term from what I have seen.
