Bushcraft UK - 2nds "heads-up"

I usually do not like to speculate on these kinds of things, but it could be possible that the company wrote it into the sales contract, no liability clause?

Well with that much wood they would have to know if it was stabilized or not. And if they sold it as stabilized when it was not that was a pretty crappy thing to do and they should be held accountable. Spalted wood is basically partially rotten. The black lines are formed from a fungus growing through the wood and I'm sure starting to break it down. Spalted wood has to be stabilized for it to hold up long term from what I have seen.

Will we now see this fine blade sporting micarta and be done with the wood issue? It would be a shame to scrap the whole design. It's a great blade.
That would be a welcome outcome. I actually like the knife, but saw some examples with what I considered really ugly handles. (to be fair, I saw some that were really beautiful, too). Its the nature of natural materials that there is some variance from one piece to another, and the type of wood being used for these handles seemed to vary a lot in appearance. I just didn't want to take the chance on paying so much money for a knife I might not be happy with. Even at this excellent price, I think I'll wait and see if they come out with a micarta or G-10 version. <fingers crossed>

I think that the wood maker believed they were stabiized, but apparently this particular wood does not stabilize enough to handle the extreme humidity difference between Taiwan, which is very humid, and Colorado, which is very dry.

I just ordered one. I'm sure whatever repair is necessary will be worth the effort.
There is a saying that you can look at a situation as a problem or as an opportunity.
Sal took a problem for his company and turned it into an opportunity for his customers.

Interesting. And quite possible. I have had mixed luck with stabilized woods, and I have only ordered from top-tier suppliers.

if it had a solid state MICARTA handle, i would possibly think about purchasing one. Possibly.....

Bushcraft knives are generally made with "organic" materials, such as Wood. But I can understand about having one in Micarta, it would be nice.

I got one, I may put a natural micarta or brown g10 handle on it. Depending on the cracks, I may even try to fill it with epoxy and buff it out.

I gotta say even for $90 I was hesitant.

I figure oh well it's just money and I am gonna buy knives anyway!

Hell, $90 is an amazing deal. I'm sorry for the CF this turned out to be, but I'm glad at least something could have been salvaged from it. And I have my own selfish reasons for liking the deal that came as a result...:foot:

Yea, ordered mine this afternoon. The sheath and shipping alone is worth $40+. Now I won't worry about banging that great looking handle around. No brainer.

Given the remarkable hype that this knife had, the extended lead time to release, the premium quality product status and the prestigious associations, the fact that 95% of production are rejects utterly beggars belief!

The customers are not quality control inspectors.

This model launch is a car crash.

And the car is a Toyota!

Just for clarification. Are the shipping out CRACKED or are they shipping in whole condition and just 95% likely to crack?

wow did the spyderco bushcraft just get compared to toyota recalls? seriously for 90 bucks buy 2 and just beat the shit out of them which is what a bushcraft knife was designed to do IMO.

Also i just have one thing to point out. what car company hasn't had a freaking recall. name one. i am pretty sure all of the big ones have at some point and time. but now that the government owns the other's (chrysler and GM) Is it any wonder why this toyota recall is such a huge deal compared to all the recalls of the past. i mean it wouldn't have to do with that would it.

either way its a spyderco bushcraft knife for 90 bucks buy it and go out and use it. stay off the beaten path and maybe just maybe you can figure out the rest of it.

...the two are not even remotely comparable. The Toyota problem is a matter of safety, performance and "disclosure".....Spyderco's an issue of "cosmetics". Can you really not discern the difference ? I'll assume your comment is "tongue-in-cheek"....and in that case it's a "hoot".:)

Thanks Sal and Spyderco for making these available to us at such a "nice" price. I'm sorry for all the 'headaches" the Bushcraft has caused you.

- regards

Good call Gramps. A hoot is correct!

I ordered one myself. I am so sorry it didn't work out Sal, man the headaches you had to had to go through on this one. Hopefully we can help recoop some of the costs involved with the sales of 2nds. It really is a beautiful design and the even though the wood isn't stabilized I still think they are beautiful!!

Unfortunate event.

Still, mighty nice knife and ordered one to give this "bushcraft" stuff a try with a good example of the "ideal" design.

Thanks for the heads up.
