Bushcraft UK - 2nds "heads-up"

This is indeed tempting but I am worried about the wood. (Not the cracking)
The example on the spyderco page has a wood that, in my opinion, is MUCH less attractive than any other picture I have seen of the knife.

Which of these two different wood qualities would I be getting?

The picture at the top of the page is a prototype, if you order one you should be getting the ones pictured at the bottom of the page (the nicer maple handles).

I'm definitely getting one.If the handle's cracked,I'll send it over to Phillip Dobson. He replaces handles all the time & very well too.:)

Given the remarkable hype that this knife had, the extended lead time to release, the premium quality product status and the prestigious associations, the fact that 95% of production are rejects utterly beggars belief!

The customers are not quality control inspectors.

This model launch is a car crash.

And the car is a Toyota!

Let's see. Toyota first denied that there was a problem. Then they said the problem wasn't bad and recalled a few units for a cosmetic fix. Then they worked the NTSB to avoid a major recall. Then once the gun was to their heads, they did a real recall. In all probability, the new fix won't address the problem since it's likely a computer glitch.

How exactly is this like the Bushcraft situation?

IMO Sal offfered these at a huge discount. most companies offer seconds close to or just above wholsale. this offering is well below. I think he could have sold it for more if he wanted. Great deal!

I stopped into the Spyderco Factory Outlet in Golden today, and hand-picked my Bushcraft. They are really gorgeous knives, and feel awesome in hand. I was able to pick out one with very tiny, almost unnoticeable cracks, so I will super glue them up and it will be good as new. Can't wait to try it out!

Just ordered mine too....any chance we could get a limited warranty for the blade....I know handles are out of the question and accept that, but since the blades are all first quality, that would be awesome....I know I'm probably asking for a lot, and if limited warranty's are out of the question, I'd understand entirely. Just figured that since 95% of the knives are seconds, it might make sense. Again, don't want to ask too much of you guys, as you guys are totally awesome, but figured there's no harm in asking the question....the worst thing that can happen is I get a no, which I'm comfortable with. Anyway, hope that you guys at least recoop your costs and make a little profit on the side, as these knives are really beautiful and it would be a shame for them to not make it into a regular rotation for a little bit just because of some minor issues. Obviously, with the way these seconds are selling, there's a pretty high amount of interest in these knives.

At $90 with leather sheath, Spyderco is virtually giving these things away. They probably aren't going to pay for all the labor that went into treating the wood with linseed oil then cleaning them up again, much less the original production cost.

The burl on these is GORGEOUS in person. Some are definitely cracked worse than others, but they look REALLY good, even if they are cracked. I'm hoping I will get around to setting up my light box and snapping some pictures either later tonight or tomorrow morning.

I got my Bushcraft in today and it really is so beautiful! There is a crack on one of the sides and the 2nd's notch on the blade and I am quite happy with it for $90! I will wait to hear how others fill their cracks before I attempt it with mine

Well, this thread just cost me $90...:foot:

This will be my first spyderco, I'll glue and fill the cracks and have a great mid size blade for waaay less than any honest person would pay for it.

Thanks for the heads up and the sweet price Sal and Crew.

Y'know...I am no wood expert...but having worked with figured wood, and with stabilized figured wood...I am not sure this really surprises me. It's beautiful, but for a hard-use knife, something dense and straight-grained might have been a better bet. :( I take my hat off to Sal for putting the design time into this knife, then doing his best to see it through to a successful launch, and then handling this in an incredibly upright manner. I look forward to the next incarnation of this one, for sure.
