Bushcraft UK - 2nds "heads-up"

I just ordered one. I'm sure whatever repair is necessary will be worth the effort.
There is a saying that you can look at a situation as a problem or as an opportunity.
Sal took a problem for his company and turned it into an opportunity for his customers.

Well said. Sorry this was such a PITA Sal, but moves like these are why I keep buying Spyderco knives.

Hopefully the NASA version will work out someday? I know the CF scales could handle the travel:)

Iboschi,

They've already cracked.

hey Canis,

We had some samples made with Micarta and G-10 as well. The Micarta also shrunk. Not as badly as the wood, not enough to crack, but enough to feel it at the spine of the tang.

The G-10 sample stayed true.

The Titanium handle will stay true as well, as would be expected of Titanium.

I'm sure we'll continue with the design concept. "Giving up" is not a path that Spyderco often chooses. I'd also like to figure out a way to make wood work.

sal

Thanks for the response about the Micarta Sal. I hope you guys don't give up, it's a really good design and I'm sure you can find someway to make it work, you always do :).

Canis

Sal, thanks for the heads up on this great bargain - I hadn't heard of these before, but it seems there is some variation in the look of the wood handles. Since I live in Colorado, is there any chance to pick mine out in person? :D

Unless I'm mistaken, they're selling them at the Spyderco Factory Outlet so I don't see why you couldn't pick one out.

I have been puzzling over the post below since it was first posted. I don't understand what the poster wants, unless it is perfection. How often does the president of a company gracefully admit error and do what's right - at least without regulatory threats, congressional grandstanding and media hysteria compelling him to do something? My hat is off to Sal and all those who work with him. Please keep up the good work.

Given the remarkable hype that this knife had, the extended lead time to release, the premium quality product status and the prestigious associations, the fact that 95% of production are rejects utterly beggars belief!

The customers are not quality control inspectors.

This model launch is a car crash.

And the car is a Toyota!

Bushcraft knives are generally made with "organic" materials, such as Wood. But I can understand about having one in Micarta, it would be nice.

Canis

why "generally" made with organic materials? is there a performance advantage to "organic" materials?

a knife is a knife is a knife........if its sharp, it will work just fine. Organic handle scales make NO difference, except PERSONAL preference.

just saying.... ;)

I think that you should check out the handle you get before trying to make new scales. The ergos would be impossible to repeat without a CNC programmed to do the job, and the cracks can be more easily filled and keep the beauty of the wood.

sal

Even with cosmetic problems, the wood scales are one of the attractions of this project. And sharing in the work is an attractive prospect as well.

After all, as Macchiavelli said, "God is not willing to do everything, and thus take away our free will and that share of glory which belongs to us." :)

I just ordered one tonight. I was debating about it but I figured that $90 delivered for a quality knife with a good blade was still a good deal.

How about some of that 2 part epoxy that comes in a syringe type tube? Would that be enough to hold any cracks together? I'll keep the handles as they may arrive, but to prevent further breakage?

This thread was the first I'd even heard about this knife and I just about $#@! myself when I saw the picture of it. That is one beautiful knife, cracks or no cracks.
I'm very sorry to hear what happened for the company's sake but to be able to get my hands on something like this for under a hundred bucks is just unreal!

It's the karma of the "sport," AFAIK. It's similar to why bushcraft knives are "supposed to be" carbon steel, not stainless.
