Busse Security Blanket...

I have one across the street and several throughout the community. We have never had a problem although, we have given it thought. First off, Go to the Sex Offender database which is usually hosted by the State police or Sheriff's dept and find out the nature of the crime comitted and take precaution's based on that information. I don't know why they group them all together as most sex crimes involve a so called "minor" which can be misleading. The number that have committed violent crimes like rape, child molestation, incest, is very few. Find out the facts and go from there. There is very little a 12 gauge with 000 Buckshot can't take care of in a home situation, and is very hard to miss at close range. A small pistol in her purse as back up.

Knowledge is power, find out what the guy did and to who, also Basic 11 yard work sessions will probably make him assume she has guns. A meaner would make a fine (self defense) EDC if she is not open to guns.

Pistol grip with stock, loaded with slugs.

Shotgun. 12g 18.5 in barrel and slugs. The buckshot would only make this guy angry.

Slugs and buckshot for home defense is well, overkill and you run the risk of way overpenetration. I have no problem using cheap lead target loads with a turkey choke. Even if you do miss, the shot loose a lot of force when they hit drywall. Buckshot carrys a lot of force at close range, and slugs would have a hell of a lot of overpenetration, or just a lot of carry when punching through drywall; even if you hit a stud it would probably blow through and carry enough force to hurt someone on the other side.

I have no problem with overpenetration (because well, that means you got full penetration), except in a home defence situation when there are more than the defendor and intruder in the house. Just something to think about if Lexi's sister has kids/significant other.

My sister loves her Remington 20ga I described and her surefire light. she can shoot slugs and buckshot and loves to shot sporting clays. nothing says stop like pumping her Remington and having 7 rounds to back her up.

I agree with the Remington 870, extremely user friendly bit of course 12g not 20.. I know MANY smaller females including my wife, when taught properly, shoot this weapon with ease and confidence. Spider

Seriously though... My wife has a 20G. Anyone shot with it will be just as dead as anyone shot with a 12G. You lose some pellets, but the recoil reduction may make it a good trade off.

I agree with you guys. A 20 gauge shooting 2 3/4" slugs has enough power to take down a deer at 100 yards. That means a 20 gauge shooting birdshot will have enough power to take down any intruder at 15 yards (probably the longest, ever, shot you will take in a home invasion situation). Plus, the 20 gauges are lighter and have less kick so there is less recovery time. I know there are a lot of women who shoot 12 gauges, but if it's just for home defence a 20 gauge is fine. Plus, we don't know what type of experience Lexi's sister has with shotguns/firearms.

Crossing the threshold of shooting someone is'nt easy and given the risk of a knife being turned against your sister, or a gun for that matter if she freeze's and does'nt fire, the best form of defense is likely to be something she knows is none lethal and is therefore mentally more prepared to use. A good Taser with built in flash light would be my recommendation and two or more sets of zip tie plasticuffs for hands and feet ( hands behind the back ). The cuffs are easy and cheap to buy and can be practised with and mastered in a few attempts. The taser's are'nt cheap but are a good investment and if children are in the house reduce the risk of a fatal accident. A taser with 50,000 volts will take down any guy no matter how big. Cattle prods are a cheaper option but less effective although they give the option of multiple strikes.

Many Bear sprays work on the basis that a Bear has a much more sensitive olphractory system ... top quality Mace would be a better buy... it is designed to work on humans.

A braclet panic alarm with a high decibel siren is always a good idea as they can be worn so they are always with you. Not many assulters will hang around with one of those going off ... it also nulls any sexual urge an attacker may have. The good ones are enough to make you want to cover your ears.

If a lethal device is required then consider a humane dispatch bolt gun, they are about the size of a torch and don't look like a gun, most women have'nt the aggression to use a knife but a bolt gun pressed against the head and triggered will definately work and little or no strength or technique is required. They are also ( at least over here ) a none firearm device and easily purchased. Used against the head they drop a heavy bullock instantly ... so will do the same for the biggest guy. If used in the centre mass of the body it should do the same. They have a very hard hitting "stun" effect. They are also self retracting and single shot. They use a 9mm blank firing round similar to a starting pistol. If used and they don't do the job they are virtually impossible to be turned against you except as a blunt object.

Personally I would go for a high charge taser or prod. If attacked or grabbed you only have to hit anywhere on the body.

Stay safe and good luck...

Take the proactive approach and burn his house to the ground...sorry having an angry morning.
Forget tasers and flashlights. Tasers only work if both little probes find their mark. They don't always.
Less than lethal is for police that have lethal backup. Meet any serious threat (life or limb) with lethal force.
As for which Busse, the Boss Jack would be a fine choice if you are limited to just a knife for some reason.

1. Go online and see what he actually was convicted of. There is a huge differnece in sex offenses.

2. Go to her police or sherriff department and ask to have all the case files for times they have dealt with the man. This will give you some idea of what he is like. They may or may not give you some unofficial information.

3. Think of defense as a tier system. I recommend a handgun but ONLY if she has the state of mind to train with it and above all else use it if she has to. She also has to be able to keep it away from kids if thats an issue. Do not count on anyone being afraid of a gun, especially if drug use is involved.

DITTO, DITTO, DITTO!!! please help her look into what he was actually convicted of. Some scarlet letter sex offenses are pretty lame, indecent exposure for example. He sounds like he looks like a few of us here:eek:

Racegunner has several good points...... I have seen tazers fail a few times and like he said less lethal should always have lethal cover... And a taser fail in your house against an intruder is bad. It may cost life. If someone is coming in to hurt you, you hurt them for good. good firearms+good training= safer citizens.

I have a pet saltwater crocodile. already keeps a few people away even though it's locked up in a pen...

She should try to find out what type of crime he was convicted of. Many crimes qualify for needing to register as sex offenders. Did he rape a 5 year old or did he have consensual sex with his 15 year old girlfriend when he was 18? One is cause for worry, one is not. This might help quell her fears... or make them worse...

only Busse gun I know of.

If you go the shotgun route, ignore any and all advice to load it with birdshot. Bad advice does not get better with repetition. Use something like reduced Recoil Law enforcement 00 Buck. and practice.

Sorry for being stupid here :foot:... but why are sex offenders worse than other criminals?

Because psychology is an important factor when considering the response people have to those who have committed criminal offenses. When you consider what the person did, one inherently asks the question "would they look to do it to me?". Beating another drug dealers to death doesn't necessarily apply to a small woman staying at home as much as a home invasion and rape conviction. I do agree with you that petty assault is on the top priority list of "things to look out for" in new neighbors since it likely involves a tendency towards temper and violence, but you have to understand how much of a powerful undercurrent the concept of rape is for a lot of women. It is a very personal kind of fear that is difficult to get away from, often much moreso then the threat of general violence or theft of property.

close range bird shot will do as much damage to the house as buck if used. I would go with buckshot or large birdshot with BB or BBB size pellets. federal makes buck and bird loads with their flight control wads. they are great loads.

Some disagreement here over appropriate shotgun loads, penetration and over penetration. The following is a great article about just that... It's only 2 pages and has pics!

It may clear some things up...

But the skinny of it all is that birdshot is for birds. It does NOT penetrate deeply enough to reach vital organs, but does make a very messy nasty flesh wound. Any bird-hunter knows that a 7.5 pellet barely even penetrates a dove breast. Think about it.

Buckshot penetrates less drywall than 9mm, 45acp, or .223/556. Slugs greatly over-penetrated. Might not be a great idea in an urban environment or where others are in the home.

Here's the link. Hope ya'll enjoy... http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm

Thanks kdstrick...I knew I had seen at least one test like that but couldn't remember where.

I did some more research and it looks like Bear spray might be a little too much for humans or not enough depending on who you ask.

Lexi, It has been touched on already about the over-penetration of Slugs and 00-Buck, this is 100% correct. When I was in the Army and we trained w/shotguns at CQB one of the favorite loads for a 12ga was #4-Buck. The reason for this is lack of over-penetration, 27 pellets per 2-3/4" shell and you also have to stop and realize that each pellet is the size of a .22 bullet (diameter wise). In a hallway, stairway or your back against a wall and with a cylinder bore 12ga the assailant wont get very far. The major reasons a person dies due to having been shot or cut is the amount of blood loss/trauma/shock. 12ga #4 Buck is wicked in this department.

Now I'm not recommending anything here just giving an opinion, cause nothing and I mean nothing can ever replace a persons training, knowledge of the tool at hand, skill level with the tool and the amount of practice they undergo. You have heard it before and I will repeat it now, practice, practice, practice. If she has never received formal firearm training then this should be the first step PERIOD, get training. Then determine what she wants and would be comfortable with using, handgun, shotgun etc. I'm sure the guys at Busse have enough guns laying around and they would be glad to let her shoot several different firearms. One of the biggest challenges people face w/guns is the fear of recoil. She needs to understand this, work with it and lean not to fear it. If she is uncomfortable with a specific firearm then she shouldn't use that one and move on to what works for her. But like I said TRAINING FIRST!!! You and maybe a couple others in the family could pay for a training coarse for Christmas, just and idea sweety.
