A knife is a great gift and an even better tool. Guns are also a fantastic tool for personal security. Training needs to come with both and regardless of current trends, both in knowledgeable hands would work well. A dog is also a great security device and can be a companion too. All in all though, I would suggest starting off in a good self defense class. Every one of my children (6) and my wife have a general knowledge and ability to maim an attacker. I have worked with sexual offenders and my opinions are less than PC. Therefore I have armed my loved ones with knowledge, skill and steel.

All that being said,
Personal Safety in INFI: A well placed Skele Key, Culty or PBF
Intimidation: Any FBM or AK47

Honestly 12 gauge pump with a 18.5" barrel and a pistol grip, chamber a rocksalt round and load it up with 00 buckshot . The first round out the barrel (rocksalt) is the warning/detouring round not to mention extremely painful. If the person is still comming at you (doubtful) pump there center mass of some 00 Buck, end of story!

Here's the link. Hope ya'll enjoy... http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm

How dare you back up your opinion with evidence and testing! ;)

Cool read, but, I'm opinionated and cheap, and buckshot is a little pricey. So, I condicted my own quick test this morning :D

These were 20 gauge and 12 gauge 870s, with birdshot, with turkey chokes, fired at 10 yards at a thouroughly soaked piece of plywood, with a piece of drywall 2 feet behind that, backed by railroad ties.

20 gauge, managed to knock the playwood over

12 gauge

Both punched through the plywood, drywall, and into the railroad tie (barely sticking in, most bouncing off). The turkey chokes definitly helped, but maybe birdshot is too underpowerd, or, the birdshot testing has always been done with a skeet tube. Hard telling.

I don't know if it proved anything, or if it was my need to shoot stuff with a shotgun and freak out the neighbors :D
For a home invasion though, first and second thing I'm grabbing is a handgun because they're what I shoot the most by far, and my experince with a shotgun is just blowing up frozen pumpkins and clay pigeons so all I've ever used is birdshot. Makes me wounder how Black Cloud or turkey loads would do though :D

1. Go online and see what he actually was convicted of. There is a huge differnece in sex offenses.

2. Go to her police or sherriff department and ask to have all the case files for times they have dealt with the man. This will give you some idea of what he is like. They may or may not give you some unofficial information.

3. Think of defense as a tier system. I recommend a handgun but ONLY if she has the state of mind to train with it and above all else use it if she has to. She also has to be able to keep it away from kids if thats an issue. Do not count on anyone being afraid of a gun, especially if drug use is involved.

4. The knife being scary is not nearly as important as knowing where to cut someone as rapid blood loss or cutting muscles that control grasping or moving (wrist tendons, leg tendons) is the only thing that will stop them. Actually it is my opinion that muscle cuts are more effective quickly then "blood cuts". While I always have a knife and do include it in my tier of defense you have to know where to cut or stab to do the most damage as it takes awhile to bleed out.

5. If she hesitates even a litle bit with wanting to train with a gun, she should get a personal Taser. You can get them at large Sporting Good stores now like Gander Mountain. they only have one shot but if she connects they do work and hurt. (Volunteering to be shot with one by "The One and Only Camo Man" would go down as one of my dumber moves except I have taken a hit 3 additional times in training.)

6. Finally I would get the huge fogger size pepper spray and put it by every door and under the seat of her car. Make sure it is the good stuff and not the wimpy Michigan strength stuff!!!

That may be more info than you wanted but thats my quick opinion.

Oh yeah....I would recommend the Scrapyard 511. I like Res C when my hands are bloody, besides its light and quick.

Thank you so much for all of that good advise, I never thought about something simple like pepper spray.

Sorry to tell you the real truth is that if she doesn't know how or isn't prepared to use what ever you get her, it will be used against her if she was attacked. Stick with the Bear Spray. Check out what he did, now days if you are caught peeing in public and get a conviction you are classified as a sex offender. Act don't react.

He is a Tier III Sex Offender with 2 counts of GSI, one count was for a victim under age 13. It really does make a person feel uneasy!

Wow, that is horrible. Maybe daily use of bear spray before he even leaves his house for good measure.

Is there any neighborhood organization to help keep an eye on this guy? If not, maybe there should be.

As a side comment on Taser C2, that personnel version is designed to continue delivering shock for 30 seconds regardless of pushing the button. That is for drop and run operation. Those that have gone through the agony for a few seconds can guess how bad 30 seconds of sustained charge would feel.

Also, some pepper spray is oil-based. Oil-based spray + taser has potential for fire. Something to be aware.

So you could zap him and set him on fire at the same time....considering the offenses that sounds reasonable to me. Of course that is coming from a dad with 2 teenage daughters.

I am wondering if it is more of an explosion than a fire...this could be interesting to try!

The guys on "MythBusters" actually did a test on pepper spray flamability; some will flame up and burn, some do not.;)

GSI? I guess I'm not well-versed in criminology-speak.:o

A lot of good answers have already been given that address more than the original question so I won't add to that as I agree with much of it, especially the handgun/shotgun portions.

As to the original question on which Busse, my wife has very small hands and the only two blades that both fit her hands and are long enough to guarantee lethal penetration are the BOSS Jack and the DSF. Pretty much every other handle is too "man sized" for her. I would highly recommend a custom shop sharpened swedge, (flying serrations might not hurt either) no choil with fuller BOSS Jack AND A LOT OF TRAINING WITH IT for a woman with really small hands.

This is what my wife chose as the most comfortable for her out of all of my INFI she has held. I still may order her one like I described someday.

Never let your guard down - NEVER trust anyone else with your kids and carry an AK to make sure everyone understands

I didn't read all the replys but first thing I would do is let him know that you and your family know that he is a convicted sex offender.

Put it right out there - we know what you are and if ANYTHING HAPPENS - like you look into my yard - you are getting the first visit by the police.

Maybe this is just in Hollywood, but I thought sex offenders were supposed to go around telling their neighbors about their status. I guess it depends on the state. I agree that it's best to let him know that you know, it's another effective deterrent in addition to the other things people have mentioned (dogs, alarm system...), but personally I wouldn't do it in a hostile way. There seems to be this general belief that sex offenders are guaranteed to repeat their crimes. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but don't make situations worse, I think.

I was gonna say something stupid like bake him "I know you're a sex offender" cupcakes but... oh wait, there I said it :P
