Bussekin & Friends + Epic Fail

I have looked at my collection a few times and thought that I should lighten the load. Each time I end doing nothing because the knives I have in my collection are all knives I like and want. I don't bother with such thoughts anymore.

But since my collection has pretty much all bases covered, these days I am much more discerning in my purchases. The knife has to be something that I really want. I find I really question my purchases now and move forward if it hits all the buttons.

Ever since I found out about it after I participated in a chop-off, I have had my eye on it. What is the handle/grip material like? Does the handle angle help with chopping? Which Busse knife would you equate the weight to?

Benchmade 171 = 1 lbs 8 oz
NMFBMLE = 2 lbs 1 oz
FBMLE = 1 lbs 13 oz
BWM Pumpkin = 1 lbs 7 oz
BWMLE = 1 lbs 6 oz
BWM CF = 1 lbs 5 oz
M9LE = 1 lbs 3 oz
B11 = 1 lbs (Stripped)

The handle material is quite grippy without being abrasive. If you press it hard it has a little give. It was the only one that I did not feel any vibration when using it chopping hard into hard wood.

I don't know about the handle angle as it is hard to speculate how it would be with a different angle. I won't claim to know anything about the design principles of chopping knives so I would need to give it some thought, and maybe still not come up with an answer. But it would still be speculation on my part anyway. I suspect that the designers felt that this was the optimal angle, either through theoretical knowledge, experience, prototyping and testing or a combination of all of those. Hopefully some more knowledgeable and experienced members will provide some answers.

If you are going to fail, fail BIG!!! :D

My thoughts exactly. Every time I try to thin the heard I seem to end up the same way......with more than I began. Your not alone on that one I promise you. Great collection.

In your last insane year, did you manage to use any one of them? Just sayin' that helps me pick the winners.

I am super glad I read this. To the OP I never knew there was a big knife store about 45 minutes from my house. I can't wait to go check it out. I've been to Fort Wayne tons of times never knew there was a big knife store.

Many are still unused but I do try to use at least one of each model. I did a chop-off a couple of weeks ago and this morning I started on a carve-off.

Just took this pic for you out my bedroom window.

Mike Bilman is a super knowledgeable guy - he really knows his stuff, not just about knives but about using them. When I bought a few from him he took me out in the woods on the weekend and we chopped up some stuff, made fire, brewed some coffee and had an awesome time. Super nice guy.

He really knows how to sharpen and he makes my favorite Kydex sheaths.

Awesome. I plan to try and go check his place out this weekend after payday :). Did he have a decent sized Busse collection? I want to go to see more than just those but Busse's are always great haha.

It is not a very large store but it is well stocked. If you are going specifically to see Bussekin or anything else specific, I would call him and ask him about specifics before going as he sometimes has quite a few Bussekin and other times not. But even if you don't see anything you want, I am sure you will have a good time just talking with him. His website has his contact details - Grindstone Cutlery.

Thanks. Yah I was looking at his site looks well stocked. I'll go there just to look and chat haha.

Good lord Tim, that is an epic failure :eek:

If I knew Eric would have given you the tag to the Ash Whacker 9.5 I would have kept it for myself, I didn't know I would be feeding the problem :D;)

Mark, I owe you and Eric a favor. Thanks much for the ASH Whacker. I really like that knife.

Yes, I really like that one as well. About to take the 7.5 out for it's first spin this afternoon.

Hah, when I went out this morning to chop some of the branches for the carving my hand hovered over that 9.5 several times, wanting to grab it but I ended up grabbing the B11.

I know I won't be able to resist much longer so mine will probably end up with a few scratches soon. I have cut much air with it though and recognized that I first I need to smooth the ridges on the Micarta around the tubes as they are very sharp. Let me know what you think of yours.

Awesome collection, the only failure i see is you failed to have any GAME WARDENS!! how could you?

I agree, there are many failures here and holes that need to be plugged - especially on some of the older models. I thought I had it covered with the SAR 3 for that size but the a Game Warden has been tugging at me. I do like rounded handles.
