Bussekin & Friends + Epic Fail

I agree, there are many failures here and holes that need to be plugged...I do like rounded handles.

One of those failures was to not have any Custom Shop hand-shaped scales. The NMSFNO just arrived a few minutes ago and the whole family, from my 6 year old daughter to my wife, loves the look and the feel of this knife.

It is strange how one's taste can change. The two-tone look with the bolster has never appealed to me before but after seeing some IRL at Blade it started to grow on me. When I showed my wife the picture of the knife online she was not impressed. When I handed it to her she exclaimed how beautiful it is.

But I am also excited about the other two new arrivals.

Did any of you experience the same, where you initially dislike a knife style or design and then it just grows on you over time?

Hey guys, my first post on Busse forum, newbie to Busse. Mostly posting on other subforums which I won't mention.
Busse was/is pretty much ruled out for me from a price point of view but some of the Busse line is enticing me...........
In particular.....thanks to I2Iku2 impressive collection & side by side comparison:
SAR4
Skinny ASH & ASH1
SarSquatch Comp finish - is that a clip point?
NMFBM
NMSFNO

I2Iku2 - would you be so kind as to do a side by side comparison of these?
Thanks a mil!

Welcome to the Busse forum, I am sure you will find much here to enjoy. If you see a knife in my collection that you own or are very familiar with I will be happy to include it in comparison shots to these.

Here is an OCD friendly picture of your request:

Here is one that I have a hard time looking at with the Skinny included. :D I am going to have the Skinny ASH reconfigured to Pumpkin and Satin.

DSC_5702_resize.jpg

To my eye the SARSquatch is a drop point with swedge. The swedge is not sharpened.

DSC_5705_resize.jpg

The Skinny ASH is just a thinner version of the ASH-1. The Skinny is typically around .187. The LE is .22. There are thicker versions also, .32 and maybe a few others.
There is much love here for the Skinny ASH among the long-time Hogs.

EDU- You should also look into the new basic line coming in "two weeks", especially from the price point. You will not find anything like INFI. Try it and see for yourself

L2- thank you for sharing. could you post a pic of fbm, nmsfno, the BM chopper we talked about, and SAR8. any other busse around same size you can throw in as well. Thanks!

There you go Doug.

BTW, do yourself a favor and get 1 or more of the Browning Crowell/Barker 580 Competition Cutters. (Third from left - my 2 are re-handled and re-profiled though.) I think they were discontinued or just very hard to find for a long time and just yesterday I found them available at Knifeworks for next to nothing. I bought two more and have another incoming. I gave one a workout yesterday and it is a fantastic lightweight chopper & usable large knife. As a test, my wife and I were cutting watermelon with large knives / choppers and that one did just fine, not kitchen knife / slicer fine, but fine considering that I took it out later and chopped up branches with it. It is like the B11 & SAR 8, performs way above its league.

You ae spoiling me! Thanks for the fast pic.

I will have to hope they are still there in July, Blade took care of my budget this month

L2,

your chopper selection is amazing. How does the browning and the benchmade compare to the Busses (rate 1, 2, 3, etc)?

I started testing and comparing a few weeks ago on a dead tree in my yard for the heavy duty stuff and in the last few days I have done lighter chores, limbing, carving, kitchen tasks etc. to see how the medium/large and large knives stack up as knives, not just choppers. I will need to do a lot more before I can really draw any definitive conclusions that I would feel comfortable expressing.

Today was a good day:

L2, the snapshot you showed me is exactly the collection I wouldn't mind to have myself, even down the to handle colours & blade finishes. Amazin how similar the handles look(from top view) to the Becker handles with regards to palm swells.
The NMFBM must be something to behold!
A question about the NMSFNO, I've seen with LE but is had a saber grind, are these the same?

Those pups are growing!

Oh yeah! A month ago they weighed 6.1 & 8.5 lbs. I could not get a consistent scale reading today because they are too hyper but they are both in the 18 lbs range. It is unbelievable how bone can grow so quickly. Her ears have come up for quite a while now and his left ear is starting to lift. They already wake me up when they want to go out and carry their food bowl when they want food. Smart little critters.

I really like the Becker handle design including the smooth Grivory. I have Micarta slabs for all my Beckers but have not put them on because I like smooth handles. My preference is for the design of the handles to provide the required grip, not texturing of the slabs. I will buy another set for the Micarta.

In Busse teminology, the contoured scales with the with the palm swell are called Magnum. Some models were (are?) offered with multiple choices in scales. The flat scales are called Standard. There may be more scale styles and terminology that I have not learned about yet.

The contouring on the Busse scales is more pronounced than on the Beckers. The Becker pictured is the original Camillus BK-7. The newer Ka-Bar handles are just a little thinner. Let me know if you want a pic of the Camillus vs. the Ka-Bar handles.

A question about the NMSFNO, I've seen with LE but is had a saber grind, are these the same?

The NMFBMLE is certainly something special. I think I might also try to get a thinner version to see how a lighter version feels. The LE is .29 and some versions are .25.

The one that I pictured for you earlier is the NMSFNO, it is a convex grind. The sabre grind is the SFNO.

The NM (Nuclear Meltdown) treatment is the rounding of the spine, talon, choil and pommel area. It feels superb and adds so much to the F&F of the knife.

In Jun of last year I decided that I wanted to return to my original objective, to keep just 4 or 5 good knives so I decided to sell my entire collection.

Here is the result. EPIC Fail.
