Butterfly Brigade... FALL IN!! (BM Enthusiast Group open application thread)

FMC, I wasn't suggesting no rules or requirements at all. I just don't like the min post count stuff and such. It only compels people (Mainly new members) to make a bunch of superfluous posts. Especially when they (and I include myself completely in this) should be reading more and posting less. No question you should at least own a BM to join.

It was only food for thought and like you said, we need to get the right permissions first and that's what I think we are waiting for right?

You bring up a good point about the name. And rules too for that matter. That's all the more reason to slow things down and see what people think. Suggest some ideas and let people consider it. Again, I'd just feel a lot better going forward knowing we have the ok to proceed.

Like most I'm very excited that there's a BM sub forum now and may have jumped the gun myself.

While we're waiting for the ok is a good time to think about ideas and suggestions to float. Nothing's in stone and all suggestions / opinions should be considered. At least as far as I'm concerned.

I as well think that forming a group should wait at least three months while the new BM subforum finds its way and develops. Let it marinate ya know. And that's on top of everything pbcg said. I'm content with reserved numbers for now, those that are interested in this group at least get to have that for now.

Just asking but why a certain number of posts requirements? Heck, there are some guys here that only have a dozen or so posts and have been members of Blade Forums for years. We just had a guy the other day post here in the Benchmade sub-forum that had joined in 2009 and only had 3 posts.

Isn't it enough that you own a Benchmade knife and post in the Benchmade sub-forum?

I reserved #03
I also have a ritter grip on the way from a trade from "TheMelonPopper" here.
When I get my tax return (maybe even sooner I'm getting more excited the more I think about it) I will have a custom full size grip. I will show pics when I acquire them. I promise :D
So that's at least 1 point, I don't know where the ritter mini grip falls into, to be honest. :foot:
Also this makes post number 12 here so Im sure I will have 14 in the next 2 weeks, seeing as this is only the third day since the birth of Benchmade sub-forum I believe.

Swoop,

Don't worry too much about it, I'm sure you'll be welcome regardless of whatever is worked out as far as joining the group.

And I agree, I'm not all that crazy about the name. I think we can do better guys?

Works for me on both counts.

And as far as membership. I'm not for excluding people that want to partake. I get that a lot of the requirements are designed so that most would meet them anyway and to show a little pride (Like pics of collections and such). I really enjoy seeing them too.

That's fine with me but when it come down to it lets not be excluding anybody here. I want to be part of the fun, inclusive group.

I'm sure most would agree.

I only *suggested* the post count because that's how all the other "groups" are organized ;) If anyone wants to re-do the "rules" feel free and we'll all edit them accordingly. Heck, I'm not even a paid member... the intent is not/was never to exclude anyone; inclusive is much preferred to exclusive :) I don't think hardly anyone has 14 posts here, but I am more than confident all would be met by 14 days. Again, the "rules" can be edited as everyone sees fit.

Swoop, I put yours as "pending" just until you get your ritter in... I didn't want to put you up and have someone get upset about it. I'll change it now. As far as the points, again I only had a suggestion that we do it for some bragging rights. I'd say your ritter is definitely "limited edition". Calculate your points however you see fit. They don't really mean anything. :D

I like the name Benchmade Brigade, too. Name change? I'm down.

If anybody (paid member) wants to take over the administration of the group, by all means. I'm actually deployed right now so I only get to hop on here on my down-time, and between phases so when we get another phase in I'm going to be around less.

Basically, I'm just excited that one of my favorite companies has joined my favorite forum. I probably jumped the gun myself, and eveyone seemed to be excited so here we are. You guys let me know, and we'll go from there.

Jake,

First off, thank you for your service! Retired after 20+ years myself here.

Thanks again for taking the ball and starting this. Great idea and as you can see there's a lot of support for it.

I think "we" all jumped the gun a bit in our excitement. You got it going and I think we're heading in the right direction.

I'm looking forward to what I know will be a great group with great bunch of guy's (and gals).

Thanks again.

I just think we went too fast. Maybe let it rest for a couple of months until the sub-forum gets it's feet on the ground and if something does come of this in the future, keep it simple.

I'm right there with you. Thanks for elaborating and for taking the initiative and getting the ball rolling with this group.

And thanks for you service.

Ok cool, It should be shipping monday and who knows how long it'll take for my custom 550 lol.
Personally I don't really care what the name is I'd just like to be part of a newly founded bladeforums Benchmade enthusiast group.

Jake,

Yea I think we all did jump a little bit lol.

I just think we went too fast. Maybe let it rest for a couple of months until the sub-forum gets it's feet on the ground and if something does come of this in the future, keep it simple.

Here is a suggestion, if/when this gets approval what we could do is this.
I do like having a post min. as the group is for dedicated enthusiasts and it doesn't really make it an exclusive thing. Since this subforum is brand spankin new though this creates issues. I'd venture to say there is still people who don't know this is here yet.

What we could do for now after its approved is for the first month have a 10 post min. 2nd month 20 post min then bump it up to 30 on the 4th month and 50 posts by the 6th month of the sub forum. I think that roughly 10 meaningful posts a month is perfectly reasonable. Then after 6 months or more it'd give everyone that's currently a member plenty of time to contribute and not just throw in a bunch of filler lol posts. 50 seems to be the golden number for posts through out groups here and most other places I've noticed.
You would also have to have a list of exceptions for people, have a person/mod in charge of that maybe, you go to them explain your situation and you'll be accepted into the group upon their super relaxed discretion. Make is so 99% of members can join without hassle, but also so that it's not just open to everyone.

Another route I like would probably even better so than that ^^ would be to have only two requirements. 1-be a registered member on BF at the least and 2-Have/had a benchmade product, whether it be a beanie, shirt, knife, emergency tool, knife or even if you just enjoy using blue lube you could become part of the group. Heck if you got a benchmade sticker on your car you're welcome! :D Bottom line is you have to had supported benchmade with a purchase sometime in your life. Come up with a name and then it'd be up to the paid members themselves on how they wish to display that they support Benchmade in their sig line.

Of course this is only a suggestion and you don't have to listen to me one bit, I'm just a crazy knife nut who recently became addicted to Benchmade and I haven't even touched one yet and I have 4 coming to me this year for sure, thats twice as many spyderco's I now have! Of course I'll get more spydies though. My cricket evolved into a ritter griptilian hehe. The prey has now become the hunter :D

I am curious what the point to having the "Group" really is ? We already know there are a lot of BM fans here (myself included), and by the number of posts already, I'd say the forum is going to be very popular.

I know it is just my opinion, and I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but the idea seems a little weird. YMMV of course

I have people ask me what's the point of having knives as a hobby. It's all relative. Why be a member of a biker club, isn't owning a certain brand of bike enough? To most it is. Maybe its something to add to your Sig to identify yourself... I do not see a point in being a Platinum member, but I plan on becoming one after my Gold expires. It's to support Bladeforums and Spark by donating money and not just for the silver platinum name right? Ok, I guess "groups" are a way of supporting a brand. Nothing weird about it... I mean some people actually pay to upgrade/identify their status. If someone wants to walk the extra mile and drop the cash on membership to become a Platinum member, they should understand why some would choose to be part of a group... How many Platinum members would be there if there was no incentive like a platinum colored name that identifies themselves as a Platinum member? People are divisive and like to be in groups, from city states to countries. The groups so far in BM have been inclusive in that anyone can join, it should be a yay or nay thing asking for a point is is really saying I won't be joining which is cool too.

Edit - The subforum groups are kind of like the Cove for the less seasoned folks and new members on BFC.

Ya, I understand, it just sometimes seems that some groups, especially manufacturer groups, tend to get a little, overzealous shall we say... :D

I don't begrudge anyone that wants to have something they really enjoy. We are all different, and like anything else in life, it is simple for those of us not really into that, to just not get involved, and let others enjoy the things they enjoy...

LOL...

sigh, i never understood the need for "groups" on bladeforums... i feel they only serve to divide us and potentially make us bias. i have jiffy pop set aside for the group war i foresee in the near future hah. are subforums and manufacturer forums not enough? to each their own, so therefore i have no brand loyalty. if rocking a banner makes you "cool", i'll rock one of my own :)

The day you see a group war on BF is the day you see them shut down. So if groups irk you enough, better hope its members do start acting up. So far so good though. There's no "need" for a lot of things including owning an obscene amount of knives when a couple is all that is "needed" in life. Groups in forums are nothing new and not just knife forums. Its really simple to just ...Not join, if it made YOU feel "cooler" not to.
