Do not buy knives on eBay unless you are very good at telling the difference between a clone and a real one. If you absolutely have to get one on eBay make sure you check the persons rating.

The adage "if you don't know your gems, know your jeweler" applies. Eprey can be a great source if you know the product and do your own due diligence.

I've never had an issue buying or selling on eBay. If you are a relatively well educated knife buyer, you won't get a clone or fake. Nevermind clones and fakes have clone/fake pricing. If you have doubts about anything ask for more pictures.

All that said, the fees ARE terrible and it creates pricing designed to add the fees into the sale.

I absolutely prefer to sell here or the other place over eBay. BUT, I have had some stuff listed for months on knife related forums, and when I finally put them on eBay they sod pretty quick. Regardless of how many eyeballs we have here, there is no comparison to the amount of people combing through eBay.

Not a "hatchet" - but that's a normal error.
Not a Boy Scout item
Not a Plumb
Marked as made in China - so he got one word right.

For me as a buyer, not of knives but in general, as long as I have enough confidence that the item is not counterfeit and the in a condition and state acceptable to me then I am good as eBay does offer more protection to the buyer.

My selling experience is mostly good and the issues I have had usually resulted from not being thorough enough before listing. Some examples of honest mistakes I sold a video game cartridge where the picture didn't show that the top side of the label was worn and faded and I forgot to mention but buyer was ultimately content with his purchase no issues. I also sold a collection of CDs for someone and did not test them and one was severely damaged and discovered after having already passed funds along to the original owner leaving me to try and work out a solution. I don't think I have had anyone unjustly refund anything and worst case was the severely damage CD buyer had demanded a refund and before communications could complete it was forced through eBay's buyer protection.

I can be the R100, not in UHC, OR the R200 in UHC . Can't be both, and a BIG difference in going prices.

I have been buying and selling on eBay for about ten years with only one or two issues, one regarding an out of production folding knife. It was a fake. However, the seller did not know that and was quick to resolve the issue.

I have a 100% seller rating with over two hundred sales. I take good photos and lots of them, describe what I’m selling accurately, stay in communication with my buyers and offer fair prices. I have found that auctions and “buy it now” usually result in sales that more than cover eBay and PayPal fees. I am contemplating upping my membership level here and selling some knives here. I am unclear though about what remedies are available to me should a buyer try to cause unwarranted problems. I feel I have good protection with eBay. I am obviously not clear on this and as I spend more time here, especially in this particular forum perhaps that question will be answered.

RESPONSE TO POLITE QUESTION ABOUT WHAT HE WAS SELLING:

"New message from: x-wing63 (2,388)
Hi I think it is a r100 from other pictures I have seen n there are no markings saying it is. I don't know a lot about knifes so it is up to if you bid or not. Thanks for looking x-wing63"

So he guessed and it's up to the buyer to detect the inconsistency or get scammed. Typical of the 1/3 WAGGERS.

Not sure what your vendetta against ebay is, but i can easily cherry pick things too.

Point is, ebay is perfectly safe unless you're illiterate. I've been buying on ebay for 8 years or so, and ive only ever gotten the wrong thing once, and that was because i didnt READ, and bought the audio book instead of the regular book.

Hell, plenty of sellers on ebay are authorized dealers of many knife brands. So again, use the smallest amount of caution, and read, and you wont have any issues.

Caveat Emptor

It can be an adventure buying on eBay. I bought a knife blank and received this instead. Fortunately it cost me nothing to return and I got all my money back quickly. On Amazon returns can be expensive sometimes.

Attach that to a broomstick, and head on over to the Renaissance Fair! While I know it might be tempting, try not to use it! If you do use it, make sure to get pictures/videos! :D

This has been an interesting thread - some old, some new. My less than .02 worth:

I still buy and sell on Ebay (have for almost 20 years) - slip joints and Randalls. However, it is still (as it always has been) shark infested waters... mostly with slip joints. My favorite description is "condition is used' or "look to photos for condition" These descriptions usually hide functional bads, like weak springs, wobble, etc. Even so, I have returned two in the last month (and I almost never return an item) that had glowing descriptions that turned out to be completely bogus.

For me, trading on the forums has been much better in the honesty department than Ebay. I see more of a tendency to describe "faults" that might otherwise go unnoticed.

On both venues, Ebay & forums, it is what it is - so complaining is pretty much a waste of effort. I just hang out and wait to hit a patch that is good for me. I do like buying on the Blade forums, best. The descriptions are honest and most members will communicate and are willing to be flexible. The forum has grown tremendously since I joined and provides much, more than just a sales platform. I have been all in on being a paying member whenever I am active. As such, unless I hear some compelling reason to do otherwise, I also favor dealing primarily with paying members...

I would do your homework. Ask a lot of questions and research a bit. I’ve personally only bought knives from eBay twice and didn’t have any issues. One was a Benchmade a few years back. I asked the guy if it had perfect blade centering and he said yes. I received it and it’s dang near hitting the scale. I told him about it and he offered to accept a return but I didn’t fool with it. Sent it to Benchmade to fix the centering and they sent it back exactly the same way. I would say as long as it’s an authorized dealer you should be ok. The other purchase I checked with the manufacturer before purchasing and they said the dealer was good to go. Personally i feel much more confident buying and selling here. The community seems much more open and honest
