Calling Out Rick Marchand!

Why you all quiet today ponk?

Super busy at the house. I'll make 2 or 3 with different handle embelishments, Andy. I'll be sure to leave you enough stock on the bevels to do your thing, bro. Do you want me to grind the handle flats in? It gets tricky when there is forged areas on the ricasso and butt. I have to forge the belly of the handle a little thicker so when its flattened for the scales, the forge marks aren't ground off. You dig?

Rick

Yep. Sounds good. I'd like to learn how to do the scrollwork. So post pics.

Dude,

This thread is going to cost me money.

I have some sheath ideas too...

Okay - I just wanted to be a part of the coolness that this thread is.

You two Sally's need to get back to work and make us something to blow our minds :D

I profiled one today just for fun. Much like the first drawing. I used a piece of 440C I had left after cutting the three Woodsmen out of one bar.

I just got back in from the forge.... got one hammered out.... camera died midway through.... bah.

I'm uploading pics to Photobucket as I type this. Back in a minute.

Actually, I post them tonight... gotta make dinner and clean the house. (my other job.)

Oh great! Now your family comes first. Jeez.

Okay, so today I was able to get out to the forge. I found some 1/4" x 1" 5160 flatbar, which makes things alot easier than starting with 3/4" round.

I made the decision to flip the butt design so that the rounded part would be in your palm rather than the scroll. I figured it would be more comfortable that way.

I used my hot cutter to split the steel for the tail that would become the scroll. I then drew it out long and thin.

I started shaping the rest of the knife but upon the second heat, my camera died.... oooops!

The rest of the process included hitting the hot metal with a hammer... often. You'll just have to take my word for it.

Things worked out well and I got pretty darn close to the drawning. This is going to be a sweet knife.

I'll forge another one soon.

Wow - what an interesting knife this will be.

Who is going to be the lucky bastard that keeps it?

Rick,

That sharpened I beam is a sweet idea!

So the steps to making the scroll are to cut it and hammer it out perpendicular, then to file off any stress crack areas, then to bend the tip out, and then the whole thing in?

More pics please.

Andy... opposite, actually..

There are no stress cracks if you do it right (hot). I file off any wrinkles/folds/nicks and shape anything I can't get my hammer on. After it is drawn out longer, there are two steps to creating the scroll... I'll try to get some real pics on the next one...
