Caly 3.5 Super Blue

Well I decided to try forcing a patina on mine and here is how it came out:

I figured I could easily polish it off if I didn't like the way it came out but I was pretty happy with it. All I did was immerse the blade in a glass of white vinegar for about 30 minutes. Then stropped the edge to polish off the patina from the bevels and put some Tuff-Glide on the pivot area to restore smooth opening/closing. I think it will continue to patina more as it is used.

Just dipped the knife or rather the blade while it was still attached to the handle. I just immersed the blade right up to the edge of the handle.

Now that I've resharpened it, it looks better with the bevels more highly polished.

You can rust blue the blade as well. I've done it several times with ferric chloride. Just clean the blade thoroughly, apply an even layer of the rusting agent, and let it sit. When you have an even layer of orange rust, immerse the blade in boiling water. The chemical reaction will occur over several minutes and then you withdraw a blackened blade. Clean it with triple aught steel wool and repeat the process to deepen the color.

I'm sure that would probably be even better. I have some liquid ferric chloride but so far I've never worked with it and am a little afraid of it. I was going to try it if I couldn't get acceptable results with vinegar.

I like the idea of steel wooling some of the patina off and repeating the process. I think that would probably improve the results also.

But mainly, I just wanted to get a jump start on getting a patina going and get a little rust protection as well. I may eventually steel wool some of the patina I have now off to lighten it up just a touch, so more of a natural patina can develop. For now I just want to see how it goes for a while.

Howes appears to have one cc model avail.. I passed because I have one en route,

Mine arrived Saturday, rest assured you'll not only love this, it'll probably have you thinning your herd if you're like me. I am really impressed with japans finest super blue, so much so that I took it out for sushi.. I love how the model and steel type are stamped, not etched.

I now see why Sal sought this steel out (and admittedly carried for a while)

From now on, whatever Sal carries, I carry! My new rule,

This has to be one of the thinnest factory edges available. I touched up the edge at around 12 degrees per side and It matched the factory edge pretty well. The only reason I touched it up was due to a brain fart on my part. It cut through the paper plate and hit the table top while I was slicing some cake for my kid. Impressive.

hum,

when you read how proud of their steels japanese knifemakers are, it wouldn't surprise me if every employees at the japanese factory took special care for this one. blue super is one of the most renowned japanese steel.

I felt the same way as you "meh" I had purchased a Caly 3.5 VG 10 right when they first came out. It sat in my Spydie Pack with the other Queens :p until 3 weeks ago. I always carried a Stretch or Para as an edc. for some reason I took a closer look at the Caly, and had an Epiphany :D Its a small package with a 3.5" blade, slices like anything, also it doesn't seem to scare the loonies as much as the others. This new Super blue will most definitely become one of my most carried knives.

Don't get me wrong, I feel like as a user it probably couldn't get much better. I just think it *looks* very awkward, which is dumb I know. If I had extra knife buying money around this would STILL probably be near the top of my list, though. I at least have one carbon steel spydie, and it rarely leaves my pocket. good ol' cpm m4 Military :D

Looks good. I think it won't be long before it looks even better.

On mine, I took some steel wool to the forced patina (photos posted above) and lightened it up just a bit, but already more natural patina is developing over it. Just using it for cutting food causes it to patina more. Eventually, I think it will reach a point where it's more or less stabilized. The nice thing is that no rust is cropping up so far.

kreole, that rainbow patina looks sweet. Now I'm torn between that and mongatu's. I'll probably go the lazy route and just let a natural patina grow on mine. :p
