Are those two old timers in bone? The bottom OT has a shield like I’ve never seen. Is it a commemorative or something?Square-bolstered Schrade stock knives over the years!!View attachment 1886206View attachment 1886207
That’s living dangerously! Nice knife, but risky behavior. OHThe only time I’ve opened both blades together. I held my breath.
Thanks, Jeff!!Great show, Charlie!
Ha Ha!! There are lots more out there!!If somebody ever asks “where did all the good knives go?”
Yes, both bone!! The first is an early 8OT, the second is a commemorative, as you guessed, but I don't know what year! Are those two old timers in bone? The bottom OT has a shield like I’ve never seen. Is it a commemorative or something?
I didn’t know those existed. Thanks for sharing. Those are amazing.Yes, both bone!! The first is an early 8OT, the second is a commemorative, as you guessed, but I don't know what year!
Early Bone 8OTs are grail knives, rare and spendy!! That one I showed is worn and cleaned - best I could find, after looking for many years. Schrade came out with them in bone, they called it "meerschaum bone" because it looked like an aged meerschaum pipe; but quickly changed to delrin!!I didn’t know those existed. Thanks for sharing. Do you know about what year range they made bone before switching to delrin? And which models they had at that time?Early Bone 8OTs are grail knives, rare and spendy!! This old Schrade USA Wrangler has hogged at least 75% of my EDC use since February. For my needs this is the perfect pocketknife. The only improvement would be the addition of an awl for boring holes in Fishbites, but the clip manages that job decently enough. OH

Is that knife pinned or of swinden key construction?
I agree it’s a grail knife. The 8ot is the perfect size for a bit bigger hands. The only thing I don’t like about old timers is the delrin. I even like the name.
Thanks for sharing your info with me, and all here.
Thanks for the information, Paul!!The last version of the schrade 899 has that same blade setup including an awl.
1961 is the earliest schrade catalog showing the 8OT and it had bone handles initially. Not sure on the timeframe but it was short lived as they are fairly tough to come by. It is much easier to find a bone handle 881 which is the same knife without the old timer branding.
The early 8ot’s would be pinned just like the old schrades, but it would not be too surprising if someone were to come across a transition 8ot with bone handles and swinden construction. You are most likely to encounter a pinned one though.
Thanks Paul, something for me to search for. OHThe last version of the schrade 899 has that same blade setup including an awl.
