Camillus Bank Liquidation

I was told today that a Mr. Gilbert and Mr. Jim Furgal will no longer be with Camillus after this week. The bank will start liquidation shortly with the Camillus factory being sold. This is a sale by pieces. One cannot blame a bank for being the party that loans money to people or companies. Banks are in business to get paid back.

I was told the union would not negotiate on the point of members paying part of their medical insurance. It does not help to point fingers at the union or management. I wish both groups the best future that they can have. I hate to see this happening to another small American company.

real big bummer-
just another piece of american history gone-

personaly i hope the name dies or aleast a american company buys the name and continues usa production -anything but another china product with american history for a name

Camillus have been some of my favorite knives since my first Marine Corps fighting knife in my teens. It is a sad, sad day. Maybe time to stock up. Hopefully Americans will buy the company and keep the tradition alive, but I'm not holding my breath.

I really hate to hear that but with the earlier posts about the situation the writing was on the wall. I hope an american company steps up and buys the rights to the camillus line, i just can't stand to see another old line company name placed on a product made overseas. later, ahgar

dang at the rate this is happening pretty soon there won't be any american knife companies.

Ironically it was just 2 years ago, July 31st that the same thing happened to Schrade. My 2 favorite old knife companies.

I wish the best for the Camillus workers and I also hope that an American company buys them and keeps the manufacture here in the USA.

I have noticed that the Becker line is drying up.I had a hard time finding a BK9, everyone I called was out! I finally found some in Texas,& they only had three, so I bought two cause I love my BK9!!

Grim!
I'm gonna buy another recent Queen produced knife, just to give them another minute or two of existence! I think it's really the last traditional cutlery left in the U.S.A.
So long Camillus!! I hope you have a decent re-incarnation!!

Sad news indeed. Like the rest of you, I can only hope some American company steps up to add them to their line and keep their brands alive.

I have a question about this whole deal.

Since cold steel licenses out some of there designs, such as the carbon V knives to camillus, does this mean that those knives will stopped being produced as well?

And i'm sad as heck cause i love my beckers and was planning on getting a cuda maxx sometime.:(

I would guess that cs would just find another company to produce the patterns made by camillus. later, ahgar

Maybe Cold Steel should just buy what's left of Camillus?

that would be cool, i would like to see this company preserved even if its only in part. as long as it dosnt go to china or any other asian country i would be, well not happy, but content

Still none yet from my sources. I got that the strikers qualified for unemployment a week or so back from news media, but nothing yet from inside the factory management or staff. But my inquiries were sent out late yesterday, so I am not surprised at the lack of immediate response. As far as I can tell, it is all unsubstantiated rumor so far. WWII Bill, who is your source and is he/she reliable?

Sad, sad, sad.
Sigh!
I rest in the fact that I still own a couple of Camillus products made in the USA.
It a shame that the present batch of factory hands played right into the hands of numerous off-shore OEMs.
Would this mean the end of all the other brands under its umbrella?
Such as Western, CUDA and Becker?
That being the case,
I certainly hope that at least Ontario Knives would keep the flag flying.

I am glad I still have my Camillus products to remember them by. I have a pilot survival knife made in 1967 as well as others. Does anyone know if it was Camillus that made the Good Craftsman knives for Sears? Or could it
have been Schrade? I think I'll pick up a couple more Cam's before they are gone...:(

BOth Camillus and Schrade made knives for Sears under the Craftsman mark. You just about have to have the Sears pattern number conversion charts to know which knives were made by whom. As far as I know these are not yet published. Perhaps CAMCO, textoothpk, or knifeaholic can provide some Sears/Camillus numbers for us.

The source is very true and very reliable. However, due to the sensitivity of the situation with regard to workers and their families I cannot disclose this source. The information that is being made available is very solid. The work and file employees, salesmen etc… are not privy to the inner workings between upper management and their recourses.

When a company is in bad financial shape they are going to do the same process that the head management of their sister company Schrade went through. From our understanding when Schrade gave notice to their employees, they read a one page statement giving notice to the employees that they were closing the plant immediately and escorted them out.

So what we are telling you is that our information is from a very reliable source and this is what appears to be what will unfold. I am very sad to see this small family business coming to an end.

We need to support American made knives the best we can.

The Schrade employees were given notice letters on July 29th, 2004. Some employees were kept on as a skeleton crew finishing knives from the parts inventory, until the actual auction in October of 2004, a bit over two months later. This resulted in a boost of the inventory of WIP and the creation of what we refer to now as the "end of days" knives. Basically, the assemblers were told "If it fits, assemble it".

Who wants to lay odds that SMKW is already lining up semi trailers to scavenge the inventory for their profit.
