Does anyone still carry “traditional” folders when there are Sebenza’s, Benchmade, Microtech, GEC and so many more on the market with OTF, assisted opening etc...?

First hello @WreckedVeteran and welcome to the traditional sub-forum. I saw you were new so I checked your posting and see you are exploring BF and that is a really good thing to do when new as there's so much info here.

As to your question the short answer as Prester John Prester John yes there are more of us than you can imagine.
I am a collector and although I do own a few modern folders I find I like so many others prefer traditional patterns in a folding knife and tend to always have one riding in my pocket and these are the reasons why.
First I find them much more attractive with cover materials from mammoth ivory to delrin, the smooth and curvy lines of artistic construction embellishments such as nickel-silver bolsters and so on.
Second is the history these knives have been the cutlery workforce for hundreds of years. To think that a couple of hundred years ago when confronted with cutting task it was a barlow or trapper or some other traditional pattern that was pulled from the pocket and accomplished this task no problem.
Third is functionality and usefulness these knifes are work knives and in many cases for specific task. They always preform well and with many having multiple blades you always have the right tool for the job. I could go on with how razor sharp they get with such thin blades or how the disappear in your pocket with such ease of carry but I think you get the idea many of us are incredibly passionate about traditional knives and always have one in our pocket. And as far as use such as battoning and other hard use we usually go with a sheath knife (fixed blade) or a hatchet.
I hope that somewhat explains why that we not only carry them but prefer them.
Again welcome to the Porch as we call this place.

Welcome to The Porch, @WreckedVeteran !! :)
Speaking only for myself, but reflecting my attitude about folding pocket knives, I'd modify your question slightly ;):

Does anyone carry Sebenza’s, Benchmade, Microtech, and so many more on the market with OTF, assisted opening etc... when there are still “traditional” folders available?

(Different strokes for different folks.:thumbsup:)

I'll bite. Where can I find an OTF, assisted opening GEC? :confused:o_O

I still carry 'traditional' folders. I sometimes carry modern, one hand opening knives too, but just don't find them as interesting to discuss as traditionals. There are so many different patterns and handle materials, as well as the history of the companies that made them, it's endlessly fascinating. Try it, you might get hooked on old style pocketknives, too. :)

Doesn't sound so bad to me. I LOVE grape jelly and cheese sandwiches. (Have to confess that I first had them with Velveeta pasteurized prepared cheese product, or whatever it's now called, and even though that's not real cheese, that combo is still probably my favorite version.)

My sister used to do this but used Colby jack, all ways thought it was kinda gross!

Back on food topics ;)

We all have likes and dislikes....I detest all those insides of animals- liver, kidney, tongue, bowel, sweetbread barf! Brain is bearable but avoid is better:D What we will or won't eat may also be guided by cultural or religious taboo - although I suspect this is exaggerated to an extent. When I was at one university, I knew a Muslim and a Jewish girl as neighbours, both were very keen eaters of roast Pork, Bacon given the chance ;) :D but that was long ago in less fundamentalist and apparently unenlightened days:rolleyes:

But about the cats and dogs thing. Certainly, people will eat them in extreme conditions, various Asian cultures approve of dog eating but most people react against it. Why you ask? Cats&Dogs are no different from livestock etc But...both animals have grown up and developed alongside Man, eventually being tamed by him (no mean feat when you think of Wild Cats:eek:) and they are not only our pets, friends and part of our families but they are our allies. Without them we may have perished or still be living a very hand to mouth life-globally. Dogs defend us, protect livestock and herd them. Cats destroy huge numbers of rodents who otherwise would devour our food supplies, foul our homes and spread serious diseases:eek: I don't want these allies on my plate thanks :) Plus, what they both eat is not so cool....:D.

I think you in some parts of the USA eat snake? Rattlesnake in particular? I'll leave that one out too...;)

I heard somewhere that one of the reasons dogs evolved to read human facial expressions so well was because when hunting was lean, and times were tough, and his master called, he could tell if it was to receive food or to be eaten.

My family kept kosher when I was a child, and even though I no longer do, I think it was ingrained in me to be selective in what I eat. My mother has been vegan for almost 30 years, and she might say it's hypocritical to eat meat, but not from "cute" animals. I can accept that it isn't perfectly logical, and agree that cultural norms prevail. Many Americans are shocked at the idea of eating horses. I think I'm a reasonably "adventurous eater", but I would have to be literally starving to death before I could eat an insect. It's not logical, but phobias seldom are.

Rattlesnake isn't bad, but there's not much meat there. Kinda like eating turkey or chicken neck. :p:thumbsup:

Turkey neck? That's got to be chewy :D:D

I respect people who are vegetarian or vegan from principles and they've a valid point about being weird over 'cute' animals it's still killing stuff and I admit I hate killing anything. But...when I was vegetarian I found my health suffered, plus a good meat or fish feed is satisfying  I like to think the animals I ate all were roadkill or died of old age..:D yeah right:rolleyes:

I could go for insects though, those grasshoppers or locusts look good fried, dead crispy too :D:cool:

I used to pick up and eat grass hoppers all the time, until I found out they carry tapeworm:confused: gotta cook them, I was just grabbing them and eat'n them, lol I used to swallow live night crawlers and minnows to freak out my little cousins on family fishing trip, so I think its fair to say as someone who's ate calf fries, frogs, squirrels, possum, snake, carp (uhhgg:confused:) snapping turtle, live bugs and worms, whole minnows, I'm not put "off" by bizarre foods. I've also eaten "normal" food I detested( with a smile) to be polite, especially to elders. A particular fish stew that tasted like it may have contained carp ( uhhg) and bits of rubber tire, comes to mind...

So you've been on BF less than a month and this is your first Traditional Forums post? Something tells me you won't last.

Most food aversions are cultural. There were some Native American peoples who used dogs as food and others for which that was taboo. Cultural.
