"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

My Buck 110 got me through several years working in the mountains for the Forest Service, a whole bunch of backpacking trips, a lot of turning animals into edible meat, and general kitchen duty while I was still single. I don't carry it much anymore, but it's one knife I'll never get rid of.

The Buck 110 is an iconic knife. I own one for that very reason. But as Carl said, it is a handful. I don't use pouches, and 6 ounces of knife at the bottom of a pocket is a bit much. So I opt for slipjoints and modern folders instead.

Absolutely. The knife has proven itself for many years, and continues to be a big seller... When you hold one in hand, you just know that this knife will take anything you can throw at it, and keep going. They have a solid, comforting feel to them.

That said, I'm not a fan. I've owned older ones and newer ones, but never really bonded with them, and I don't like wearing a sheath on my belt, so it really doesn't work for me...
I do really like the 112 though. It feels perfect in my hand. But, it is still a little big and heavy for me to want to carry it in pocket, and again I don't do sheaths.
If I did, a 112 would never leave my side.

It still amazes me that Buck can make a knife of such great quality, sell it at a very reasonable price, AND give it a lifetime warranty.

I guess when it comes down to it, it's alot more effective to carry a more modern one-handed than a 110. In some ways, the 110 might be more outdated than our typical traditionals.

Just hold the blade of a 110, 112, LB7 etc. and flip the handle out...no modifications needed. I've always considered a 110 (or any heavy handled lockback) a single hand opener.

I never really thought much of 110's, they were a piece of knife history. I grew up with a Schrade Cave Bear, and tried to carry a 110, but they never held any luster for me. I even had a custom shop 110 with damascus blade and stag scales, and traded it. However, after seeing 110dave's 110 collection a couple years ago, I am in awe of all of the custom shop and Yellowhorse models.

I think that's probably the case. You can get knives that are just as strong with better blade steels that weigh a lot less and aren't as bulky, and most folks are probably going to prefer a pocket clip to a belt sheath.

But the 110 is still a really stout knife that can take pretty much anything you would want to do and not even blink, and it is still very low-priced compared to most everything else that's on the market. If I were back doing the same kind of work, it would still be a good choice, but I don't think it is going to be a knife that appeals to a lot of knife nuts. Even though I like mine and it holds a lot of really good memories, I rarely carry it anymore.

Count me among those who respect the heck out of the Buck company and family, but just never took to the 110 design. I had one for a short time as a kid, but traded it for a $3 Mexican switchblade (still kick myself for that!). After that, I acquired a Schrade LB7. A couple years ago, on a lark, I strapped it on my belt as I was heading across town on an errand. About half way across town, it occurred to me how silly I'd feel pulling out this 2-pound folding broadsword to nip a bit of stray string off my shirt or whatever. For me, a knife that size and weight is complete overkill. 'Course, I live in a big city and spend WAY more time chasing around our three little kids with a tissue than I do chasing elk with a rifle or bow.

BTW, even if I did need a big honkin', single-blade folder these days, I'd probably track down one of those model 23 lockbacks from GEC, or a yellow 5106LB from Moore Maker. Great carbon steel and loads more soul and character, IMO.

I guess it's ok to post this question here. I am looking at getting a hand gun for home defense. Me and the wife are going to get it together, taking the safety course together and will be going to the range together. I want her to be part of the whole process, and want her to be absolutely comfortable shooting it. The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about guns. I'm looking for some suggestions on what type, brand and caliber to consider. I know there is a better area to post this question, but I honestly value the opinions of those in this subforum more than anywhere else. I also though by posting here I could avoid the "You need to get two AR-15s" type of answers. Thanks, and if this isn't an appropriate discussion for here, please feel free to delete this post.

IMO a short frame 12g pump action shotgun is a lot more practical for at home defense...but if you are after a pistol you can't go past a full frame ruger revolver in .357 or a glock in .40 caliber (depends what you are comfortable with, both would be very reliable). Asking in gadgets section is a lot better than asking in the prac-tac sub forum too if you be specific on your needs.

Well said, hope to keep seeing Elliott and Gus on the forums as I enjoy reading their posts and their friendly contribution to the wealth of this forum...good luck Knarfeng and Peregrin!

Thank you, Elliott and Gus, for keeping this subforum the great place that it is. It must have been an overwhelming task at times. The respect and courtesy that we all lend to one another makes this the best subforum on Bladeforums and you two guys have always made sure it stayed that way. Thank you so much for that!

Congratulations to you both on your "retirement". Now you can just sit back and enjoy the forums without all the headaches. Something you both desreve tenfold.

Thanks for everything guys.:thumbup::thumbup:

Ditto that! And congrats to the guys with the new red hats!

Thank you everyone. It has been a pleasure as well as an honor to get to know and become friends with some of you and I look forward to having that happen some more.

Not planning on going anywhere, but knarfeng and Peregrin will be putting their spin on handling this place. For the most part, due to the folks who "get it" and hang around here it has been a great experience for me and I know knarfeng and Peregrin are going to do all they can to keep that experience going in their own way. I am looking forward to just being one of the gang and supporting their efforts.

Gus pretty much said it all so there's not much more for me to add. Thanks to those of you who have offered friendship and support through the years.
Hopefully I'll have a nice knife or two (and a back story) to share from time to time. The new trail bosses have our complete confidence so we know the forum remains in good hands.

Gary and I have been talking. We both have enjoyed this forum for years and we both have appreciated the efforts of Elliott and Gus. They leave big footprints. Gary and I both want the polite but friendly atmosphere to remain. With the help of all who post here, we think that can be done.

Thanks Elliott. Thanks Gus.

A big thanks to Gus and Elliott for helping to make this the best forum going. Frank and I have some big shoes to fill, but with the support of the great folks here it should be fun.

Thanks to all for your good wishes!

Blues and Gus a big thank you for all you have done to make this place what it is and giving help when needed. Sit back and enjoy. knarfeng and Peregrin welcome to the new positions and wishing all a great future.
