"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I can recommend a pistol like this without hesitation. BUT, with any pistol, take it to the range and shoot, shoot, shoot and shoot some more.

I wouldn't rely on any gun -- be it pistol, shotgun, carbine, or rifle -- that I hadn't thoroughly tested. I don't care who the maker is, everyone turns out a lemon every now and again.

But I second your suggestion of the 1911. A well-made 1911 is a wonderful thing. I keep these two around for serious purposes.

Hey guys...most you know that I've been stateside only a couple weeks and had 2 interviews at 1 workplace in that time, anyhoo they called me in for a 3rd tomorrow with their trainer so you think that sounds promising? they seem keen but its hard to tell. Need to get working so we can pay the rent! Never wanted a job so bad, and the benefits are quite impressive (starting wage isnt but its something I can work up to).

Good luck Rob....after a big shift like you have done....I wish you all the best of luck Sir!

Thanks mate, having the job now is a MASSIVE weight off my shoulders...took the wife to get Lobster and steak for dinner! :D I was concerned we'd have to spend all our savings while I was out of work but it really worked out. I'll keep an eye out for some old pruners/hawk bills for you ;)

Great news Robert! That will help make the holidays Merrier!

Big Congratulations Robert! A big relief and a good welcome home I imagine. Hope it is a satisfying job for you.

Since we're talking 1911s, I'll toss in a pic of the one I carry for work each day. (Just got in the door and took it off.) Colt Combat Elite XSE.

Of course this is one that got away (I trades a bit) would be an excellent house gun. S&W M19. Kinda wish I had that one back.

These make good little HD/homestead guns for those not wanting to deal with handguns or big shotguns. Puma/Rossi M92 Trapper (16" barrel) with fire sights in .357 Mag/.38 Special.

The Chesapeake Knife show was a fun time. Picked up a subscription to Self Reliance Illustrated, as well as some back issues, and a Boat Tail scandi from LT Wright of BHK. I also traded/bought a few Great Easterns from one of the owners (I also told him some of their models were too damn tight). Saw some Jerzee Devil and Bladeforums members (Carl, I'll owe you a case of beer by the time I make it to the bar, I apologize again). I also picked up my first custom slipjoint, a saddlehorn trapper. It was the makers first attempt, G10 that looks like glow in the dark G10, ATS34 blade, no liners. Again, it was the first attempt, and you can easily spot the flaws in it, and while I am not big on the G10 scales, I could not pass on the price.

Two of the GEC's I got were a Great Eastern furtaker trapper, and a Northfield Ben Hogan. I think I found my new EDC in the custom saddlehorn and the Ben Hogan.

As for the show itself, I will go next year. However, I hope they can fill the room next year. The beginning of the show was wall to wall packed, you could not move. When I left, there weren't very many people. Some makers and dealers had nothing left, others had full tables and were complaining about not coming back.

I really need to save some coins and get in touch with RL Smith, he had some really nice barlows for sale on his table. Smooth action too.

Good for you. E-mails are fine, but nothing replaces an owner hearing feedback like this directly from customers.

Sounds like there's a great story in there somewhere. :D

Dan, I wish I'd have had that beer at the show. The bloody mary they made at the bar was the absolute worst one I'd ever had. I needed a beer chaser to go with it, as she overdid the Tabasco just bit. Whew!

NEVER, order a mixed drink at the Crown Plaza! Only thing they got right was not skimping on the Vodka!

Had a good time in spite of the napalm breakfast drink. I picked up a little pocket puuko that's about the size of an open peanut. Cute as all heck, made in Norway with a good scandi grind. Small but sturdy. I plan on using it as my winter neck knife. Pull open jacket zipper with glvoed hand and pull out little puuko. I find as I get older I'm liking the pocket sized fixed blade more and more.

Met up with Dan, and he showed me some very nice old knives, and I showed him some of mine. What's a knife show without some show and tell? Loved the old Camillus daddy barlow Dan had. Good bit of history there. I'm glad someone is telling the Great Eastern guy the springs are too tight.

Looking forward to next year, and I hope more local bladeforums members show up. It's nice meeting some of you in person, finally.

Carl.

Finally finished up the keychain for my grandmother's 90th :)

About 40 hours of constant work went into this one. Kind of hard to tell since its so small.

Here are a couple cell phone shots of it

This one turned out well. It absolutely glows in person and the highlights light up like gold. It is somewhat enthralling to look into it and follow the lines all through and around it in person. It has a week for the 5 coats of spar urethane to cure. I give it to her friday.

I thought you guys would like to see a few angles and I didn't want to throw off the "what traditional thread".

That 357 rifle is great. An old farmer by me has one for everything :) They pack a mean punch.

Kevin, that's a superb piece. Whenever I see somethig that nice I don't know whether to bury my carving knives 'cuz I'll never make anything that nice or whether to keep trying in hope of getting lucky someday.

Carl and Dan, I had hoped to make it to the show but my wife thought she was going to need my help with something and by the time we figured out she didn't it was a bit late to get away. Maybe next year.
