"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Given the option, I would not choose to roll back the clock, but age does take its toll. I just picked up my first pair of progressive focals from the eye doctor. I’m looking forward to having the option of avoiding the on-off-on-off routine with my reading glasses and think they’ll be great for whittling and other projects, but, woah, they are going to take some getting used to. Hopefully that won’t take too long....

Hope you get on OK with them Greg, I am still Old Skool, with a separate pair of readers! :D I did get my main specs photochromic lenses, so that in the summer, I don't end up with 3 pairs of glasses! I don't mind wearing glasses, but my general eyesight still isn't too bad, and I sometimes forget to put my glasses on - my memory is definitely worse than my eyesight!

First i just have tell you meako meako I love reading your post.
I've been busy the last couple of weeks and haven't posted much here but I think things have slowed down well at my age things actually just stop. My daughter and her family came over tonight with a Christmas tree and put it up. Her oldest daughter turned 13 today they sure grow up fast.

I bought a couple of knives from Andrew (@traumkommode) today he had listed on the exchange. He lives within a couple of miles from me so we met this morning it was a 99 and a Cattaraugus Sleeve Board Whittler model# cm-14.
The Cattaraugus is an unbelievably nice knife. It was made in Japan in 1990 and from the quality of the knife my guess is Seki. They have a long tradition of sword makers and now their descendants are making some incredible knives. These were commissioned by AG Russell for The Knife Collectors Club from what I've read AG Russell started this club in 1970 and has been commissioning premium knives for them for years.. I'm not positive about the blade steel other than it is some type of stainless. The covers IMO are gorgeous and the acorn shield is pretty cool I have to say the fit and finish are flawless. I'm going on the hunt for some more of the Knife Collectors Club knives. This is Andrew's picture I took from his exchange post.
Oh yea I liked the Wall Street also. :D

Good to see you here Randy, nice knife :)

Does anybody remember the tv show with Peter Falk called Columbo?
Do you remember the way he'd constantly pat all his pockets looking for his glasses?
I used to think he was an absent minded goofball, but I find myself doing the exact same thing now. o_O

I am still thinking about that Columbo & Chilli link someone posted recently! :D

I've worn standard bifocals for the last 25 years or so. Due to my astigmatism the "closeup" focus area of progressive lenses would be so small as to require me to sweep my head back and forth when reading a printed page.

Hmmm... "age hath its privileges." pppfffttt. Forget that stuff, let's turn back the clock instead.
I've finally gotten used to the progressives for general use. It's nice to be able to read package labels at the store without having to switch glasses multiple times. I still have a set of reading glasses, though. I want the whole page in focus and don't like having to move my head around when reading. I try not to complain too much, and appreciate that I live in a time when vision can be corrected. In the olden days, I guess if your eyes were too weak to hunt & gather, you'd starve. :(

I've been doing that for a while now. I found my short term memory going to hell as I got older. Careful thought is now required to recall what I had for lunch, yesterday. Only in the past couple of years has that saying from the Lord Of The Rings makes any sense to me. It's where Bilbo is saying how he feels thin, like butter spread over too much bread.

Oh by the way, I was a huge Columbo fan.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with progressive lenses and bifocals. I appreciate the encouragement and commiseration.

That’s how I have in mind to use them. I often find myself without my reading glasses when I’m out and about and would prefer to carry them on my face when I might need them. :)

I’m trying to wear them all of the time for a few days to get used to them, but plan to have a current set of readers for books and crosswords and the like. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, it’s the intermediate distance where I’m seeing unexpected benefit. I guess I hadn’t realized that distance was a bit out of focus.

Edit: oh yeah, and it’s nice to be able to have my phone in focus without it being an arm’s length away. ;)

I found the same thing as to intermediate distance. I used to put on my readers at dinner, because I don't like eating fuzzy looking food. :p The thing I had to get used to is the angular distortion. It doesn't bother me anymore when moving around, they are great for driving, since I can see distance and also the dashboard. But I can't wear them when doing detailed art projects. I need to see if an angle is square, or to find the center of a circle, and it shifts around with the progressives, so I switch to the prescription reading glasses. You may have to experiment with which you like better for whittling.

I think more often he was looking for a pencil and/or writing pad. Sometimes he pulled a boiled egg out of his pocket.
Great show. He was afraid of guns, though, and never carried one.

I guess I feel a bit lucky with my eye sight. It was my distance vision that went to crap in my middle age, and I had trouble seeing road signs, and finally Karen had me go to a eye doctor. I had go near sighted in my 'older' years, so I needed glasses for my distance vision. Up close, I can put my glasses up on my head and thread a needle by candle light if I had to, and for reading I just put my glasses up on my head. But without my glasses, I can't see Jack anymore at much distance, and Jack is on vacation in 'Vegas.

That's okay, but it's played hell with my shooting. I got too a point that my arms weren't long enough to hold the pistol out there far enough that I could see the sight picture, but if I put the glasses up on my head, I couldn't see the sights either. That d---ed middle ground!

Thank God for coach guns and .410 revolvers!
