"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Jeff I agree some of them are beautiful and those three you posted are very fine looking knives.
Before I got serious about collecting knives I had an accumulation of around 60 knives mostly junk. I kept them in an old cigar box just piled in there and rarely even looked at them. I had a Buck 110 and a Schrade Uncle Henry stockman I used daily. I carried the 110 in a belt sheath and the stockman in my pocket those two were the only ones that ever got cleaned oiled and sharpened. About the only time the cigar box came out was in a conversation about knives or if I happened to get another knife.
I bought a $10 gas station knife from the Exon station and when I opened the box to store the new knife I found one of the knives in my knife terminology at that time had "rotted" and it had spread and and took out a couple more. I got online and started trying to find out what happened and came across a site that was really cool called Blade Forums. I'm not sure if that was the first time I had came across BF but it was when I started lurking around. I kept finding myself spending more and more time here for a couple of years then finally joined. Now I'm broke but I have a bunch of really nice knives, a lot of new friends and a ton more of knife knowledge. :D:D
As far as celluloid handles they just freak me out.:eek:
So celluloid off-gassing brought you to "The Porch" Randy, it was a blessing in disguise. :D:thumbsup: I happened upon BF the same way, I was Googling for information why my Parker Frost "Johnny Muskrat" knife had Schrade stamped on the pile side tangs. I found out from Codger's posts and Bernie's thread that this was a Pandora's box topic. I was soon hooked on knife history and a BF member;)

Kevin I think most everyone here at sometime discovered BF by researching something with knives. Some may have ended up here from recommendations from members I know I have told a lot of my buddy's about this place but again I believe most of us got here by looking up knife related information. I also think at least a lot of us had our knife collecting really kick started when we found this place. When I did get here I pretty much stayed in the General Knife Discussion forum and at that time everyone was praising the Spyderco PM2 and the Benchmade Griptillian. Well not wanting to be left out I ordered one each. When I received them I posted pictures so I could be a part of the "club" but truth is neither one of them really flipped my switch. I kept buying modern folders but it was my Uncle Henry that still rode in my pocket all the time. Finally I ventured over to the porch and started seeing all of those beautiful traditional knife pictures folks were posting and quickly discovered the place I fit in. I discovered GEC and bought a 15 boy's knife and was addicted. I remember my first post here in Carl's Lounge I asked if it was alright to post and Jack Black Jack Black gave me a huge welcome and here I am almost four years later still posting in the lounge.
I would really like to hear other stories of how these wonderful people found their way to the porch.

I had just got into pocket knives through another gear-related forum, and was interested in Kershaw knives at the time. There was a good and active Kershaw manufacturer sub-forum here where I initially landed. I eventually looked at the Traditional forum and thought it was all about people who collected the "old-timey" knives - meaning expensive, no-longer-produced collectibles.

I poked around a little and looked at some of the threads in more depth. That's when I discovered that Case was still in business and producing really gorgeous new pocket knives, with the nickel silver bolsters, brass liners, and bone covers, and that I could actually afford them!

After looking at all of people's threads at the time, I made my first order, which was truly a trifecta right out of the gate - Chestnut Bone CV Peanut, Amber Bone CV Small Texas Jack, and Chestnut Bone CV Sway Back Jack [still have all of those]. That was what got me hooked. So I started out with Case in the traditional knife arena, and it is still my favorite overall knife brand. As for the Kershaws I started out with - I sold one, gifted two, and still own two. Good knives, but they didn't trigger the acquisition bug like the traditional patterns did.

I'm glad I did now! :D

I can't remember how I came here, but I do remember getting a very friendly welcome from the great folks here :)

I guess I found Blade Forums and the Traditionals because I was searching for new Barlow knives and someones posting of a TC Barlow came up in the search . I then started following it for a few months until Dec . 1 , 2014 when I made my first posting . I never really caught on to posting pictures until around May , 2015 when @Peregrin kinda showed me how . The first guy that I corresponded with actually was Bob @BigBiscuit but only on a very limited basis and it was about EO Notches on 77 Barlows and @paulhilborn came in on the conversation . I think Mark Job was the very first to Friend me . This was back in the day when Mr. @Primble was posting some outstanding quality photos . By Dec. 1 , 2014 I probably had 30 knives with the vast majority of them being CASE and all but a few of them were gifts from my kids . Since then I have accumulated a few GEC's but have concentrated on Northfields because of the 77 Barlows but basically because Stag was only available in Northfields . Since then the 30 has grown to more than I want to admit and I expect that I have more Old Knives then New Knives and more Northfields than any other brands . Now not only do I have a collection but so does my wife of 58 years have one , but she does not post on any electrical medium . She does not have many , but what she has is pretty nice .

I came here looking for information on an old knife that belonged to my grandpa (first post here). Discovered the Porch, started looking around, discovered GEC (of course it was the TC Barlow that first drew me in )... and the rest is history. :D

Cool question Randy , r redden r redden ; and responses. I read BladeForums for years before joining.

I read and research and watch videos before I buy most anything; so I'm guessing I was reading up on chili recipes something I was thinking about buying. The Porch is special because in addition to the wealth of information; the people here are first class.

While I certainly enjoy my GEC knives, the following is far more important and one of the best things I've read in years. :)

I had bought a few GEC knives from Bob Andrews (he was the only online dealer I was aware of at the time) and in the summer of 2015 I sent him an email asking about any kind of site (he knew of) where I could see pictures and maybe read some reviews?

Bob (RIP) sent me the links to the "GEC Blog" page & the Blade Forum "Traditional Folders" page.

BTW @Old Engineer Mrs. Oro and I just celebrated #35 :) and are certainly looking forward to the next 20. :D

Harry,

I not only enjoy your posts, but also appreciate your humor and wisdom.:thumbsup:

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year & Best of Health (to you & yours).

Best Regards & Happy Cutting,

I actually came to BF looking for a replacement for my CRKT Super Mall Ninja Warrior. I actually wound up purchasing a modern, but I came across a picture of a beautiful knife with a funny "un-X-ld" shield on it. I actually Googled "un-X-ld knife".:rolleyes:

I started looking more and more into traditionals- picked up a Buck 55, Case Peanut, and a few others before falling headlong into purchasing over 100 knives. I've sold or gifted off a bunch and received some gifts from wonderful people here. I'm around 75 knives now, and it's alla y'all's fault! :p

The Porch has helped me immensely, honestly. I've made friends here who I treasure, and it wouldn't have ever happened if it weren't for that funky CRKT.

An "Ole' Yeller" should be in every pocket. :D
