"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Funny that you ask. The family and I are going to spend next weekend in a friend's cabin, right on the border of Stanislaus National Forest. Located in between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe, I can't wait to get out of the suburbs and into the woods. A much needed getaway for the adults, it'll also be a good opportunity to get the kids unplugged. Knives and nature, a winning combination.

Our family vacation is going to be the cousins reunion in Key West this July. Five days for family get together doing a bit of swimming, snorkeling, fishing, hanging out in the shaded patio grilling and downing cold brweski's, smoking some good cigars rolled right there in Key West. Can't wait for the next three weeks to pass!

Key West can be REALLY hot in the summers, but I'm jealous. Don't forget to get a meal at Meteor BBQ, and rent scooters too!

Yeah, that's why the off season rates are so good! Plus we fill up Mona's guest house, all the rooms so we get an additional group rate discount. We always stay at Mona Santiago's place so she's familiar with our family and requirements. Being an island, a beach is never far away, and the guest house has nice pool and shaded patio where we use the grill and have evening cookouts. Someitmes lay low during the hottest part of the day, and go up to the night spots at Mallory Square at night. Or maybe the Green Parrot over on Whitehead street.

We LOVE Key West! If I could find a nice little bungalow for less than a half million I'd consider living there part time. Oh heck, maybe full time. It's easy to see why Hemingway fell in love with the place.

fwiw- A few years back, I worked for a pool company and my foreman carried a Case Trapper as his edc. That knife handled everything he threw at it. It took me too long to realize that a traditional knife is all really one needs.

Unc, I know you and I have run around in the same knife circles over the years. Trying out almost every type and manufacturer and well respected makers. In the end, I agree with you. I like them all but a sharp traditional is all you need. A lot of the times it actually makes more sense and works better. Who would have thought :-p

A hot band and a cold beer in the Green Parrot -- THAT is a tough combo to beat!

And I've also enjoyed a few of those aforementioned hand-rolled cigars in my day.

By the way, if you're interested in some (relatively) authentic Czech food and a glass or two of draft Pilsner Urquell, there used to be a Czech restaurant in a little strip mall on the other side of the island, away from all the tourist stuff. When my wife and I celebrated our first anniversary down there in 2001, some Polish guy at the Hog's Breath Saloon told us about it. The food and beer were good and the juke box full of Czech music. Ask around. If it's still open, shouldn't be hard to find.

Scott Gossman's interpretation of the White Hunter knife, thought you guys might like this. Also, carried by Backwoodsman and Tactical Knives writer Dan Schechtman in Alaska on his retirement fishing trip. Here's the pic from that article. Traded with BF member Andster at his house last night for it.

It's the knife on the right, resting on the Cold Steel Trail Boss axe. The other knife is made by Michael Mann, of Idaho Knife Works.

I've been lucky enough to write a few fishing articles for a cool site. I figure you guys can relate. Cheers.

This is writing I do for free because I think it is important. And traditional. :)

Thanks Dan. I enjoyed both of those, particularly, "Fishing with the Princess".

Excellent stories. Not many folks can write a story that portrays the essence of what it is all about the way you do.

E-bay delivered a nice little surprise today. I sold a canoe and got an e-mail saying I'd been paid, but I didn't see the money in my paypal account. Turns out e-bay holds the money for 21 days if the person has to pick the item up. I guess that gives me three weeks to figure out what knife I'm going to spend the money on. Worse things could happen.

I did like the Keys when I stayed there, not much for the sea (I'm no fisherman though) but for the atmosphere (being a Hemingway fan, I assume this added to the charm of the place).
As for sea...it's summer here :-)
