These posts in the “knives and records” thread reminded me of the blues, and an incident from the early to mid 1980s. BB King and Bobby “Blue” Bland were playing at Constitution Hall downtown, and a friend and I got tickets. We showed up, 2 scruffy-looking white suburban kids in jeans and t-shirts, to find the entire venue packed with middle aged and older black folks, dressed up like they were going to church or something - the ladies were wearing hats and everything as I recall. It was a great show, but the whole time I felt so embarrassed about being so under-dressed. In our defense, this was pre- internet days, so I couldn’t exactly google “what is appropriate attire for a BB King concert”.
I'm envious of you having seen B.B. live tshirts and all. Of course I'd wear my jeans and a button down shirt and my hat'n'boots anyways. I love blues music, the rythm guitar hook in Albert King's "Born under a bad sign" is one of my favorite guitar lines ever. The whole groove of that song is amazing imho. A newer young bluesman I'm really taking a liking to is Marcus King,no relation to any of the "3 Kings" though, he's a white boy lol.Damn fine blues player thoughThese posts in the “knives and records” thread reminded me of the blues, and an incident from the early to mid 1980s. I think I've got one of his albums. Gonna have to dig it out.I always liked some John Lee Hooker. The first time I heard him, I said “so that’s where the Keith Richards gets those riffs”. Mr Lucky is an album that wears well.

I haven’t kept up with music much since my teen years, but back then, DC was home to a really diverse music scene, and I took in a fair amount of it - Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, Rock, Punk, and all sorts of other stuff which defies classification.I'm envious of you having seen B.B. live tshirts and all. Like Weird Al Yankovich?all sorts of other stuff which defies classification
I never saw him live, but I do remember hearing him perform live (with just his accordion), on the Doctor Demento radio show...Like Weird Al Yankovich?![]()
Are those canes or umbrellas in the upper left corner? Supposed to receive a cane via Fed Ex today. Right knee giving me problems, and I want to forestall surgery as long as possible. My folding chair arrived!
All ready for church in the parking lot.

They're canes, though my principal umbrella goes there too, when I think to bring it up from the basement after it's dried. Here's a few of them. Are those canes or umbrellas in the upper left corner? Thought about getting a sword cane or brandy cane, but ended up ordering a plain cane. (Was reluctant to order one, but I've already got hearing aids, so I figured what the heck.)
Nice collection. I like the Toucan. They're canes, though my principal umbrella goes there too, when I think to bring it up from the basement after it's dried. Here's a few of them.

The one on the far right is Italian. The derby handle should go on a longer stick, but there's no great urgency, since for the most part I don't really need them. I'm thinking of lashing a fly-whisk to the wild cherry on the left.
I was having pains in both knees a while back, but now it's just the good knee, and pretty well under control.
In mid 80s BB King came and played at the Nice festival, on a warm summer evening in a nice (no pun) park. We filmed the show and had a chat with him after. He gave me a little Lucile pin as a gift for wifey. Too bad, she kept it when we split! These posts in the “knives and records” thread reminded me of the blues, and an incident from the early to mid 1980s. +1Nice collection. I like the Toucan.
And here in Southern Wisconsin , we have seen that any bird that goes to our seed feeders has also gone for the Grape Jelly that we have out for the Orioles except the Robins , Turtle Doves and Humming Birds .I have been having trouble keeping my grape jelly cups filled for my orioles... turns out not only do raccoons and chipmunks like grape jelly, so do the Robins here in Green Bay.
