You've been Busy as a Beaver.

The Scourmont Abbey is at less than 10 miles from my home. It's a local beer. You find them in food stores, not directly from the Abbey. A great beer indeed, i can't compare to others, when i drink a beer it's rarely an other one.

Dan.

That’s outstanding! I’ve tried a number of beers, including other Trappist ales. Chimay is top notch. The only one I might put over it is Orval, but they are both really excellent.

Just an update for those who’ve been praying and staying aware:

We got our power back last night around midnight. The power company says most customers in our area will have power by the 22nd. There was a lot of damage from fallen trees, but most of the folks I know from our school and church community have come through with only minor damages. Worst of all may be the incompetence of the building company that just completed the new bridge between Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach—eight, EIGHT, barges became unhitched from their moorings and two of them crashed into both of the bridges that span the inlet between the mainland and the beaches. One of them had a crane that took out an entire span of the new bridge. Likely months of repair. The Garçon Point bridge has already been assessed and reopened, thankfully.

The other six managed to come to rest without causing major damage, but what a fiasco.

Thanks for all of the prayers and thoughts. Many folks are returning to normal, but there will be others with months of abnormal to still endure.

Does anyone know a good source for knife stands? My SIL is interested in displaying a few fixed blades (maybe folders, too) and wanted to know about stands for them. I've never used them, so didn't know. Thanks for any help!

An other Trappist which is really good is the Rochefort. And there is the Westvleteren. Very rare, you can't find them in stores, you have to call the Abbey, give your car registration, your phone number and you get a day and an hour, 5 minutes too late: no beer! No choice, blonde or brown ale, what they have in stock is what you will get. No talk.
I've only had once the chance to drink a one, the funny thing is it was in a bar in Chimay! The bartender didn't want to tell me how he got some bottles. Expensive but well worth it. Exceptional beer.

Glad to read you are out of major concern and have not had too much damages with the storm (or is it a hurricane?).

Dan.

Prayers for all those in harm's way, and recovering.

This year of fires, floods and plague.... I'm trying to keep a sense of humor, but it isn't easy sometimes.
It's Rosh Hashanah, and also Talk Like a Pirate Day, so wear your mask and say, "L'shona Tova, ye mateys!"

Restrictions are due to covid, but you could get some (paying big money) here : https://www.saveur-biere.com/fr/738_westvleteren

No JP, it has always been like that at Westvleteren. Long time before the epidemic. It happens the monks make some special brewery orders (the GEC SFO somehow) for distributors like Saveur-Bière (thanks for the link!) but it doesn't last a long time and are pretty expensive. I can see by the way those beers are "produit arrété", out of stock. No matters, i can't complain, Red Chimay is good enough for me.

Ommegang Brewery used to make some delicious abbey-type ales, but I think they've changed their lineup. Anyone try their more recent offerings?

I used to buy (when wealthy) some the way I said. stopped because price/quality ratio is too bad ie for that sum you can get Yonne wine, that do even not compare.

I've been very busy those last days at sawing, splitting and stacking heat wood.

While i was at that, i've stacked some beers, what would be a hot stove without a good beer?

Knife content with the F&F pocket carver which isn't only a great whittler. It excels as well at removing splinters from my hands.

Winter may come, i'm ready.

Great photos, Dan. It looks like you’re living the life!

A sharp, thinly-ground wharncliffe is fantastic for removing splinters. Even the relatively large blade on GEC’s #47 Viper is great at it.

I’ve tried the Rochefort before, it was very good. Been a long time since I’ve had any Chimay; I should probably remedy that. :D

Nice F&F #99! I keep hoping GEC will do another run of those. I’d love to have one in Nifebrite.
