"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

My enjoyment of antiques seems to have drifted into other areas in addition to knives. I just bought an old 25 lb York "roundhead" dumbbell. Now I need another one to make the pair... and 30 - 100 lbs in 5 lbs increments... and somewhere to put 32 dumbbells. :p ...then I need find full sets of York "bun" and "globe" dumbbells... collecting is dangerous.

alright gentlemen,

baring my soul moment. I am 34 years old, will be 35 come december and I have an appointment for something i have never done before
thats right, i am getting my first tooth pulled.

dang thing broke about two weeks ago an today is the first real day i have had a chance to do anything about it. I will just say, having it hurt when you eat SUCKS
so i am excited, but a little nervous about the whole thing, never had a tooth pulled before.

anyways, my appointment in is about 90 minutes and i figured a little good karma from the traditional fellows cant hurt :D :/

Aw man, that outright sucks and I'm sorry for your pain. I had my first tooth break last July just before my Key Weest vacation. But the dentist put a crown on it. Cost me some bucks, but at least I still have a full mouth f teeth. Maybe he can crown it for you?

Funny, mine didn't hurt at all, I was out to dinner with Karen and Di and Roy, and I was having a Cobb salad. I thought one of the bacon pieces seemed too crunchy, and I felt something like a pebble in my mouthfull of food. I work it out on a napkin, and there was half of a back tooth. I go in the mens room, shine a light in there, and low and behold, a back left tooth had sheared off to expose the filling that had been in there at least 45-50 years. Next morning the dentist fits me in, and 4 hours later I had a brand new tooth. Real cool equipment the doc had, little laser scanner for dimension, Little CNC mill that made the tooth.

Several decades of chomping on stuff has left some of myt teeth worn to the point that they are going to break and need crowns in the next 2 years or so. I hate it. He numbs me up good, but the screaching and grinding noise and feeling really stresses me out. There's no physical pain, but the sounds drive me nuts!!!!

Good luck!!

I hope everything goes alright.

And there´s not too much pain.

I hate the dentist - had a bad experience as a kid. In Germany we have an insurance by law for any doctor-relationship.

Let us know, if everything is alright!

ok so the tooth is out
no pain, alot of pressure though, with him jerking on my tooth. Ironically he says i have excellent tooth roots :D good for keeping the tooth attached, not so great when you want to pull one.

the broken tooth went all the way to the nerve (hence the pain) so i couldnt just get a crown, i would have to have gotten a root canal and then a crown...which was a bit steep, so i just had him yank the tooth.

what really sucks, i am a smoker, and i am not supposed to smoke for a day or so (pffft like that will happen) or drink carbonated beverages (mt dew fanatic here). Or i risk a "dry socket". I am not exactly sure what that means exactly, but they say its PAINFUL!

i did already cheat and puffed a little on one just to calm the craving, but its going to be a long, bad afternoon i think :p

but i got a gaping hole in my mouth (2nd to last tooth on the top) and it doesnt really hurt anymore (might be too early to tell) and prescription of loritab if i need it for pain.

Yes dry socket HURTS! I got it when I had wisdom tooth cut out about 10 years ago. I was 35at at the time.
My grandmaw told my wife to go to the drugstore and get clove oil to put in the socket. Well it worked! Don't ever want dry socket again.

yeah the dentist pretty much said i was predisposed towards dry socket because i am a smoker
my wife just regaled me of stories of her run in in with dry socket

needless to say, i am sitting here all ...expecting the worse

oh and i googled dry socket, they said the pain usually started 1-3 days AFTER the tooth is extracted
so i get to sit here an wonder for a few days if i am going to get it or not..fun fun :P

otherwise, doing fine :D

Well, Do everything you can to prevent it.
Keep it packed with gauze, don't drink with a straw, try to keep everything on the other side of your mouth, "and" (drum roll) QUIT SMOKING! (Ducks and runs away)
Seriously, if I could do it, you can too. ;)
I smoked one to two packs a day for over thirty years. One of the reasons I quit was reading an article in a magazine about smoking being as addictive as heroin. I had made myself a promise many years ago to never become addicted to anything. After I read that article I quit cold turkey. I wont lie, it wasn't easy. I haven't smoked now in over ten years. ;)

so far so good. no issues, although i read online it can take 1-3 days for it to be sure
but as for now, doing ok

as for the quitting, meh
i know me, when i am ready i will quit, quite possibly cold turkey
but until i am really ready, i will just be wasting my time :p

it is what it is :D

You should be fine, just avoid hard sneezes and coughing...my wife has had her wisdoms done recently, I need mine done too, but dry socket seems to be the main concern. The hole it leaves kinda freaks me out! lol As for smoking, I never found it addictive, I smoke a pipe and cigars but I go months without smoking then when it gets cold out i love to sit on the porch with a packed pipe of Erinmore pipe tobacco.

I feel your pain, sir. Similar thing happened to me not long ago. I went to the dentist for a root canal (ugh), and between the first and second appointments, a DIFFERENT tooth cracked. This time, below the gum line. Only option? Yank that sucker. Luckily mine's all the way in the back, so it's not that visible. :/
Hope you heal up well.
Relevant: What has 40 legs and 10 teeth? The front row at a Willie Nelson concert! ;)

haha, willy nelson concert, love it

yeah it was the 2nd to last tooth in the back, lucky for me!
its nice being able to drink something cold without it hurting :D

Bruce, your post makes me wish this forum had a "like" button as facebook does.
YUP! :D
I know what folks are going through when I watch them feverishly ripping that little cellophane tab at the top open while their hands are shaking, and feel sorry for them.
I was at a lady friends house last night for dinner and a movie. (Hunger Games was GREAT!)
Any way, I got roped into scrubbing the tar and nicotine off of her return air register for her A/C. Half way through I mumbled something about it's too bad it will just get coated again. She's a heavy smoker.
It was a pleasant evening, but when I got home I had to strip my clothing off and jump in the shower to prevent my smelling like an ash tray.
Every time I bring up her quitting, she just says; Don't start. We've been friends for over ten years.

I was really lucky to fall into a great deal on a used 03 Silverado. I also lucked out on getting it ready for the road. I picked up tags for it on Tuesday, and will be hopefully going down to pick it up tonight, tomorrow morning at the latest. Now, I haven't driven at all since the accident. The only vehicles available for me to drive are smaller vehicles. I am a big guy, but have decided I'm never driving anything other than full size pickups for the rest of my life. Tomorrow morning will be spent driving and re-acclimating myself to the road. The afternoon will be spent with family celebrating my niece and nephews birthdays. I am very excited to not only get out of the house, but to get out and see family. I plan on visiting friends and family over the next week, and getting back to work. When I was first in my accident, I asked people to please give their loved ones a squeeze. Give them another squeeze for me. It has been great to heal up fast. Two months, I am still hurting all over but doing so much better. Cabin fever is a pain in the butt, but it is almost over for me.

I just found a pic from the responding volunteer fire company on their Facebook page. The pic is bad, sent shivers down my spine, and a goose just walked over my grave. It's a pic of my accident scene. Can't forget my new lease on life. Makes you think about what is important in life.

Hey guys! Here's a picture my sister took this morning from her house a few miles to the south of Sacramento:

They were flying south down the "Deep Water Channel."

This is off topic of what you guys are discussing today but I'd like to know:

I haven't flown with checked baggage in years. My question is - when you check a bag or bags when flying, do the bags have to be unlocked or can you check a locked bag.

I want to go to Hong Kong and Nakhon Phanom, Thailand (on the border of Thailand and Laos). Singapore would be a good stop too.

Anyway, locked or unlocked checked baggage.

Ed, I've flown to Europe and around the US in the last couple of years. I've always locked my checked bags with TSA approved locks. These have a TSA key over ride, at least the combination type do. I'd check with the countries you are flying to but I'm betting that you wouldn't have a problem locking your bags.

Here's a pic of a TSA lock;

I've flown around the world a few times now and never used a lock, my brother used a TSA lock when he flew to comic con and they just cut it off lol
