"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I saw my first live coyote the other evening. It was in my back yard trying to catch a rabbit. That rabbit had a vertical leap I'd have envied in my glory days. Except I never had glory days. My glory days must be still to come.
I’ve seen them in our yard as well, but mostly fox, these were taken last year, snaps from a video, the den was in a culvert under the road and I was in my truck.

Then last week I saw this in our front yard.

Interesting thought, I know we have a lot more fox than coyote in our immediate neighborhood. Mostly hear the coyote on the other side of the lake and behind the dam. We also had mink up until a few years ago, haven’t seen one for awhile. At one time we saw five all running around at the same time in the yard. This is also a clip taken from video from my deck, he had just climbed down from the tree.84A8D707-7DB3-4C99-8DD4-97F5CF531EEF.jpeg

Nobody's got another tale or vignette?

Once upon a time, they had knives and lived happily ever after. Not like those poor saps who lacked knives.

Coffee time.

I can send you a recipe? : confused:

The last couple of years we've had a couple families of foxes living in our neighborhood. I love seeing them.

We also have rather large packs of coyotes that roam the farm fields that surround three sides of our neighborhood. Occasionally they'll come into the neighborhood, but pretty rarely. They've caused all kinds of trouble for the farmers, and a couple buddies and I have been enlisted to hunt them on several occasions to thin them out.

From what I've been told, the clearing out of some nearby forest displaced the coyotes, pushing them to hunt the farm fields. This in turn pushed the foxes into our neighborhood, as the coyotes will kill and eat the foxes if they get the chance. From this I've gathered that the two wouldn't long coexist in the same area.

We live just over the Wisconsin side of the Illinois border, and over the last couple decades there's been a large immigration from The Lincoln State. This has caused many family farms to be sold and subdivided into neighborhoods. Unfortunately for the fox and coyote, this has meant less and less territory for both.

Any wolves in your area? I know from the Illinois DNR that there have been reports of a few sitings in recent years in Jo Daviess.

I haven't heard of any wolves by us. I know that they're thriving up north and that they're starting to cause some issues with farmers up there again, but haven't seen or heard of any in our area yet.

I live in the country and we have coyotes, fox, deer, turkey, hawks, owls, wild pigs, other assorted animals, and even mountain lions.
I've seen them all except the mountain lions, but I'm sure they've probably seen me... which can send a shiver down your spine when you think of it.
My kids' school was cancelled one day while they got a mountain lion out of a tree on the playground... that could have ended real badly.
Early one morning we heard a pack of coyotes bringing down a pig just right next to our house... loudest and worst noises you've ever heard.

I can imagine how that must of sounded. We hear what must be them taking something, but they are pretty far away, usually across the lake. The fox on the other hand, are always hunting in the ravine right off our deck. They can really make a racket for a small predator.

I've heard that Coyote will kill peoples' pets in their garden, so cats and medium sized dogs are not safe.. unpleasant and if you keep any manner of ducks or chickens....

Foxes are becoming urbanised here like in Britain as there's plenty of bins, fast-food muck and no hunters. They have a go at the Hares (Jackrabbit) but they're usually much too fast for them :D In this area there's been a massive amount of wood cutting this past decade- good income when other sources are thin, but it has displaced animals and reduced the bird population quite noticeably. An offshoot of this has been an increase in the Wolf population as Deer and Elks (Moose) get displaced . I've seen a Wolf, or rather met one by accident, at close quarters on a path, very odd but moving experience- and I'm usually wary/scared of big aggressive dogs for instance . But he just regarded me, astonished, stayed still and then very purposefully disappeared like a spirit back into the forest- and so quiet, unlike dogs who tend to crash about etc. What I'd most like to see is a Lynx, but they're shy and up trees out of sight but they see you....

Coyotes live in Stanley Park, a rather big, and Beautiful place in our city's West End!!
A joggers paradise, the Park has brought those critters
into contact with running Humans!! They (the coyotes!) can't deny their instincts, so a small number of them have nipped at heels with tragic results, mostly for the critters, who get hunted down!!

We have a medium sized dog, a Wheaten Terrier, (posted a photo of him for the first time today) and he has run off into the woods several times after being let out to do his duty, and come home bloodied up a bit. Once pretty badly, with a split ear. Don’t know what he tangled with, but we suspect maybe a fox. He weighs 40 pounds, so he might be able to hold his own against one but we don’t really know for sure. It could’ve just as easily been a big raccoon.
