"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I will try to lighten the mood a bit.
My wife’s new pup is officially now a terror. Craps everywhere in the yard with no rhyme or reason so that I’m fearful of stepping in it (those turds are so small you just don’t see them easily), she has a loud bark whenever she wants her way (like out of the kennel at ‘nap and give the other dogs a break from you’ time) ate one of her own turds the other day, plays like a bulldozer, and is chewing things I don’t see other dogs usually go after - chicken wire, large potted plant containers, weird crap.
Correction is going well enough - just a lotta work. Everything I own outside I care about is up out of her reach now…or behind a fence/pen. Tough little dog thinks she is a male rottie that’s underfed. And we feed her three times a day. My wife the dog trainer is like “that’s a bulldog with some energy” and I’m like “that’s a lotta work”. I have to carry around Nyla bones (synthetic bones) in my pocket and when she is chewing something she gets a big “No” and a swift scruff grab (back of the neck) and I immediately slip the Nyla bone into her mouth and give her a gentle “This…” and a couple long body pets. Then I go pick up another bone and slip it into my pocket and wait for the next time.
She is getting it. Soon she will just chew the bones. We keep a lot around and rotate them, sometimes through the dishwasher - makes them new and exciting again. Grease one with peanut butter and they are over moon!
At least she holds it all night. And ain’t crappin in the house. Only two accidents in the last few weeks. :)
Sometimes I wish she was a cat. That liked to sleep. 😂

Today is PD Day for my school district... that's Professional Development.
My fellow teachers can attest to what a complete waste of time these days are.
We get packed into small classrooms with our fellow teachers, many of whom we don't know.
We get to take classes from fellow teachers on topics like Sensitivity Training, Yoga, Deep Breathing, Self Awareness, and host of other self-help type stuff.
Hello, Administration... I've been teaching for 30 years and I'm as "Professionally Developed" as I'm ever going to get already. ;)

Sorry about PD day John! I had a tough time deciding between the sad or the laughing icon.
Sounds like a NEA idea, plan, scheme...

I remember sitting in one of those and having a presentation on how we as teachers needed to diversify our lessons and instruction rather than just lecture like the ‘sage on the stage’ for long periods of time. You know - break it up into group activities, videos etc. The ideas was that over 20 minutes of typical lecture the human attention span wanes….and we would lose a lot of kids attention etc. Made sense right? That presentation was six hours long…given by a speaker who liked to talk way too much. But we did get a lunch break…and there was no AC and a heat wave.
Enjoy the free donut.

I hear you on that! I’ve been teaching for forty years and this year is my last rodeo. I’m a sped teacher who works with kids with social and emotional challenges. Needless to say not many other teachers want my job. This has given me the ability to pretty much blow off those mind numbing meetings without worrying about admin blowback. 🥱😃

Lol... see what I mean?
Stop trying to reinvent the wheel.

I wanted to be an RSP teacher... until I found out about all the after school meetings. 🤪

Thanks, only thing I’m really going to miss is working with kids. Most of the other stuff not as much. I’ve been an SDC (special day class) teacher for most of my career and only having 6-8 kids in my classroom plus two support staff is a bonus. There are days when those 6 kids can feel like 50 though. And there’s the times when a 3rd grader tells you to go F yourself that are truly special. 😝

You should volunteer to lead the "sensitivity training" and then proceed to talk about how best to handle and care for your knives. You know, how to treat them sensitively, and with great care. :-D

OK Listen up people....I know you've all got more important work to do but today we are having a professional development seminar....it will be conducted by a 23 yo fresh out of uni with lots of new ideas for you....ideas which have used in other countries....
Has everyone got their open eyes glasses? And remember my rule? DO NOT ASK ANY QUESTIONS!

I also hope it is not our Randy. Judging by the name of the wife that survives the Randy who died in January, I don't think it is our Randy.

I hope Randy is doing well. His last post said he was leaving the forum. Hopefully he is just doing other things. He gave me a lovely Boker Trapper a while back, I miss having him around.

I heard from Randy in late March of this year. He was fine as of then, but I haven't reached out to him lately

Had something pretty cool happen the other day. A buddy of mine has a pile of redwood from a deck his friend built at a rental he had to move out of. Guy built it and six months later he had to move…oops! I couldn’t believe he built a redwood deck in a rental (I’ve owned my home…or the bank still does anyway…for 15 years) so anyway my buddy bought a couple truckloads of wood off him to help him out. He never did anything with it and I offered to give him some dough if he would let me pick through it…he said forget the money just take what you want. So I grabbed a bunch (not too much didn’t want to be that guy) and power washed it. And built a reclaimed lumber potting bench for my patio. Always wanted a nicer one than the crap one my wife overpaid for at the nursery. Anyhow here it is. 6’x28” deep. Counter height give or take at 3’. Tricky to get the 2x6 slats spaced right but it “looks ok from my house” and my knife came in handy more than once! I actually had to stop scribing lines and go get a pencil 🤣 sorry for the night shot but I started after lunch and it was dark when I had finished. Thinking about putting something under the post legs so they don’t sponge up water when it rarely rains. It’s a little overbuilt and I could stack cinder blocks on it :) I think the trim boards are poplar maybe but everything else is redwood…that’s been aged a bit.6C5EDCEC-ACAA-4AB6-ABD9-68C7FF2E3836.jpeg

I think it looks great! I like “overbuilt.” Sturdy is cool! 😎👍
I caught this picture from my bathroom window...
Very cool shot John. Around here the deer barely look up when you drive or walk by. 😊
