"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

There's a tai chi form with a straight, narrow sword (ch'ien is the name of the sword), and a pa kua form with the broadsword (dao).

We had swords in the gym (we called it a "gym") where I studied, but my teacher didn't trust us with swords. He didn't trust us to throw a punch correctly. He more or less thought that we were a bunch of idiots.

I don't remember any of the straight swords at Asian Martial Arts Studio in Ann Arbor. There were daos, and some of those halberd things. Our tiger-specialist assistant instructor is the only one I saw using a weapon, in his case the dao. But who knows what went on among the inner chamber disciples.

[I had to come back because I didn't remember what I posted five minutes ago. Coffee time.]

At my gym, during my time, the students were a mixed group —old, young, male, female, athletic, out-of-shape — and I don't recall that anyone was a superstar, but there were a few survivors from the 1960s, when the students would train all week, then go to Navy bars in San Pedro on the weekend in order to get into fights. They just loved to "work out," as we used to call it, and they were very serious about Tai Chi and Kung Fu. There was no "inner chamber," but anyone could take the training as far as they wanted. For me, it was a very profound experience.

@5K Qs I quit kidding myself about the shape I'm in Gary. After my covid caused stroke left me with neuropathy there was no sense in pretending. I'm just thankful for each new day to enjoy the things I can and the challenges I fight to overcome.
Hang in there good Buddy!! First I have heard of that happening, related to Covid!
I had my stroke 2 years ago now, and I will always live with some effects, but Live I Will!! You Too!!

From what the doctors told me strokes are common among covid patients. My symptom manifested itself in CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome). I'm still here to see the sun rise every morning which I'm very thankful for. I implore everyone to do everything in their power to do what's necessary for themselves and everyone around them to prevent the spread of this scourge.

sorry to hear that Alan. Indeed, because a couple of years ago when covid first struck we were watching people's d-dimers like crazy, even post discharge. A lot of em had high levels for months after. That was part of why covid is so dangerous even to this day. Its not just the virus, but the sequelae after, aka long covid. Of course, with omicron its even worse because its currently the more mild form leading some to take it less seriously, however that is debatable in the medical community. Not to mention, the unlucky folks ive seen who've caught covid twice

Thanks Jack mrknife mrknife The pain is nothing like it was when I was hospitalized but it still comes and goes. I'm not judging how seriously others take this other to say "why take the chance?"

yup, that was the hospital's take, even with our vaccine protocols, their generic post vaccination email is still don't take any chance. My hospital and clinic are part of the ongoing research and treatment efforts of covid/post covid, so we're technically on the cutting edge. hence i've been a bit reserved about commenting on the subject. I just tell folks don't risk it, no doctors know exactly what happens to some one when they catch covid. To me, its equivalent of playing russian roulette with one chamber empty and the other 5 filled with various unknown lethality.

You know better than I. All I know is based on what I saw I got off easy. So many with critical long term problems that even with my complaints i consider myself lucky.
