"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I spontaneously quit for some reason, from 2-packs a day, over 50 years ago!!
But I cannot pass up a good cigar box; usually free!! 😲 So useful!!
Less than half my accumulation . . . . . . . . .these are the empty ones!!

Cuban Cigars proliferate in Canada - I love the Cohiba Boxes!!
Nice selection Charlie :) I used to have to pay for mine, but didn't mind too much. My favourite type for knife boxes are Charatan Tubed Churchill, but all their boxes are good, and come with dividers and a lift out drawer. I have loads of them :D When my local tobacconist first started selling cigar boxes, usually for £3, I picked up a box, which was still half-full of cigars, under the top empty tray! Honesty got the better of me though! :D ;) I have a few fancy ones that I keep meaning to do a better job of dividing :D

cheap little birchwood-tipped Hav-a-Tampa Jewels
My first Father in Law used to smoke those. I would on occasion too. It's been 30+ years since I smoked my last cigarette. The 10 years prior to that was fits and starts. Certainly one of the smartest things I've ever done.
I'll share a little cigarette story, from 1966 or so. My best friend had moved to Baltimore, MD, and I decided I was going to take a bus from Utica, NY to visit him. I was 16 years old that summer. I had my backpack with me, my Old Timer Stockman in my pocket, a pack of cigarettes, matches, and a few bucks in my wallet.
I arrived at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC, where I had to change busses. I went looking for a cigarette vending machine, and my jaw dropped when I had to pay $1.00 for a pack of cigarettes 🚬! I was horrified! I'm not sure how much I was used to paying, probably half that.
Now they are $14.00 a pack!

Many moons ago I smoked a pipe. Gave it up when I got married. My bride said she would not kiss me after I smoked a pipe until after I washed my beard, because she did not like the smell of smoke in my beard. Well, we were newlyweds, so we kissed quite frequently. It was easier to give up the pipe than to be washing my beard all the time. Got married over 38 years ago, so I guess I've been smoke free for about 37 years.

Sorry Todd bigfish64 bigfish64 . At least TB made it exciting. With the Rams turning over the ball four times, TB should have won. Good for Stafford. Guarantees there will be a California team in the SB. Hopefully the other team will be

I called those Hav-a-Tampa cigars cheap, but your story reminds me that inflation hit the cigars, too. When I started smoking them around 1972, a pack of 5 cigars was 20 or 25 cents (4 or 5 cents per cigar). When I finally quit smoking them in 2014, I was buying them online, 20 packs for about $50, or $2.50 per pack of 5 (50 cents per cigar). In the drug store, they charged $6 per pack of 5. (I checked online this afternoon, and it looks like the going rate today is about $55 for 10 packs of 5, or $5.50 per pack ($1.10 per cigar).)

Wow! What a great football game. 25 points scored in the last two minutes of regulation. Only 4 penalties in the whole game. No turnovers. I think KC and Buffalo are probably the two best teams in the NFL. I wonder how long it will take my fingernails to grow back 😜

I'm happy they beat the Packers, I was rooting for them.
They will have another tough game next week, so don't hand them the Lombardi just yet. ;)
You should learn to love the Pack, John. St. Vince (Lombardi) would want you to.

You should read Kipling's The Betrothed.

One thing I like about Green Bay is that its the only small town with an NFL franchise. I've heard it said that St. Louis and KC are "too small" to support a franchise, yet here's a town of 100,000 that has a team. Makes me root for them just for that. IIRC the town actually owns the team so no owner is just going to move them from town to town looking for an extra couple of bucks.

I'm one of the owners, and I live in south Texas.

Thanks Mike, It was a good game at least. It looked like it was going to be a blow out.

They're absolutely perfect Charlie :) Unfortunately, I can't get them anymore because the tobacconist closed down! 😭
