I wonder what happened to the "card catalog cabinets" that every library branch used to have before all the records went digital?
I thought that the many small but deep drawers that those cabinets had would have worked well for knife storage, but I've never found one in the 8+ years I've been accumulating knives.

I think the drawers would need modification to hold anything but cards on spindles. Not sure, though, because I haven't seen one in a while either.

This is what I need for knife storage. I wish I felt more confident in my ability to make something like it.
I've had pretty good luck finding old Gerstner cabinets that needed a bit of restoration at reasonable prices. One from an auction and one at a flea market (although the flea market had no idea what it was).
This came from the auction and holds barlows.

Now this is one of the new Gerstners that is made in China for Gerstner. Not near the quality of the American made ones but pretty nice for the price.5BC4126B-4FEC-4280-9317-433DC2446BC1_1_201_a.jpeg

Hope you make a good cabinet, Barrett!!
This is an antique I found - shallow Oak drawers!! Easier and cheaper than building one!! Each drawer holds over 30 folding knives!! 9 to 10 wide, and 3 to 4 deep!! 15 drawers!!View attachment 1937176View attachment 1937177View attachment 1937178

Very nice, Charlie. That’s a good amount of storage!

That’s actually not far off from what I’ve been using for several years now, GT. I found this old parts cabinet (?) when we lived in Arizona. It can hold between 7 and 16 traditional folders per drawer if they’re laid out neatly like the second photo. (I have a couple drawers of cheaper knives that are packed in tighter, but I try not to do that.)

I lined the drawers with tool box drawer liner.

It works pretty well, but the main reason I’m looking for something else is that this cabinet is nearly full. 😳

Old blueprint cabinets are awesome if you can find one. I found a metal one a while back but it was enormous so I passed it up.

That’s the kind of flat file cabinet I’m talking about. I think it would be perfect, just five drawers of big flat open space, without wasted height. They can be very large. New ones seem to come in 24” deep x 36” wide (the size I think I could use), 30” x 42” (probably too big) and 36” x 48” (way too big). But they also appear to be very expensive. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a used one locally for a while now with no luck so far.

I've often thought about buying a nice storage device for my knives. But every time I start to think seriously about it, I think, "But I could use that money to buy another knife." So far, the knives have won out. Maybe someday.
Yeah, I sometimes dream about nicer storage solutions, but I'm actually very happy with my stack of adjustable-compartments Plano boxes in a cupboard.

The red & white cabinet next to it is from a dental office!! (not as efficient, but good!)
Charlie, I dig your ancient cabinet, very good looking old fashioned office piece of furniture! 👍👍👍
The red one next to it may be practical, but knowing where it does come from, I can't imagine opening a drawer without earing the devastating noise of the dentist's drill! 😱😱😱

Yeah, but you didn't say how many cabinets you own now to hold all your GECs 🤣

Oh just the one. For now. But between the GECs (they now take up half the drawers plus one) and other knives, it’s pretty much full. If necessary, until I find something with more space, I might have to evict a couple drawers of inexpensive knives to a cigar box or something.
