"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I got this pic of a Robin feeding his/her babies under one of our porches today. It was pretty dark and I had to tweak the image a bit to get any detail, but I was happy to get something.

She said it’s a good thing to have a speed bump between your brain and your mouth.
Sound advise that too few have learned to follow.
So, what drives me nuts is people who, like, start every sentence with "So".
That can pretty irritating. As can the overuse of "you know".

So, I tend to do that quite often.

So I'm a big fan of Seamus Heaney's Beowulf translation, and how he translates the first word of the poem, hwæt, as "So" (most translations seem to go with "Lo").

So, if it's good enough for some old Anglo-Saxon poet, writing over a thousand years ago for a bunch of feasting warriors, drunk on mead, it's good enough for me!

So, I didn't care for Heaney's translation, but what I like about it is that the original Old English is on the facing page.

Well, I guess that’s why they couldn’t hit send! 😜

Me too, it drives me crazy! 🤯 I listen to a lot of news and 'talk radio', and every politician they interview uses it repeatedly, sentence after sentence! 😖

Cool pic Gary, well done 🙂👍

I once worked for a fellow who I realized was a pathological liar and con man. Often, when he was explaining something to a customer, he'd start of with "Well, ya gotta understand, the thing of it is is..." Sounding for all the world like Foghorn Leghorn. I realized he did this to buy time while thinking of a good lie to tell. Using his mouth as a flywheel for his brain.

Yes, I suspect that the (fairly recent, here) popularity of the long, "so...." among politicians, has the same purpose

Today, I'll be mowing & trimming the yard to get ready for the event of the season.....Our little village's 131st annual Memorial Day parade on Saturday. There were only three years that our village didn't have the parade. Two years during WWII, and in 2020 during the covid pandemic.:( The village currently only has about 30 residents, but was once a thriving community until August 1941, when a fire destroyed the entire town except for our house, three others, and a church. All of the buildings that survived had new metal roofs. Back then, most houses in this area had cedar shake shingles, and the fire spread by jumping from roof to roof. Two general stores, two churches, a feed mill, tanning barn, and many homes; all gone in a day.

Anyway, our little village was the only place in the county that held a Decoration Day/ Memorial Day parade, so all the high school bands, veterans groups, county volunteer fire companies, etc from miles around came here every year, and the tradition continues. People who marched in the parade as kids return with their grandkids & great grandkids. Our 150+ year old house is located in "centre city", so the parade passes right past our front porch, and we get a pretty good crowd. There's a family of bald eagles that have a nest somewhere along the creek, and last year one of them did a flyover during the parade. If there hadn't been a couple hundred other witnesses, I never would've believed it. One of the original churches is still in operation, and they have a pavilion, and band stand next to the old grave yard. There's usually a couple really bad bands, plenty of food, and a baked goods sale.

Around 4 or 5 PM all the visitors disappear, and we get back to normal boring lives.

What a great tradition! Have a great day! Post some pics! :D ;)

Is just me or is anyone else tired of hearing pundits, politicians and people in general saying, “Basically” when responding to anything. That and, “You know” seem to be used WAY to often. Have you ever counted the number of times people use them during conversations? My mother always admonished me to STOP saying you know when I spoke to her and it worked eventually. I learned to think about what I was going to say before I opened my mouth. She said it’s a good thing to have a speed bump between your brain and your mouth. That and sometimes you should just not hit send! I’m still trying to wrap my head around that especially after a few libations. 😜

Absolutely !......that's the one I hate most.
As the philosopher Arnold Drummond once said
" mouth on fast forward , brain on rewind." Which I feel is accurate for most politicians.

Our NSW police commissioner hasnt viewed the bodycam footage of the cop tasering the 95 yo lady with dementia in the nursing home ...who has now died ( surprise surprise) ..because
" I want a clear picture of what happened." !!!??...google Claire Nowland may she now be in a better place.

Yep that was so wrong.

Occasionally I wish I had a speed bump between my index finger and the submit button.
