I saw some stats today about the Lions coach "going for it" on 4th down. In the 3 years he's been coach, the Lions have decided not to punt/kick 123 times (I don't know how many times they DID settle for punt or field goal try); they've made 1st down 65 of those times (about 53%).
Regarding this very successful season for Detroit, before the NFC Championship game, the Lions had 24 situations with 4th down and 3 or fewer yards to go, and they went for it on 20 out of the 24! They succeeded on 17 of the 20 they attempted (85%); 15 of 18 in regular season, 2 of 2 in first 2 playoff games. I'm not much of a gambler myself, but I'd roll with those odds! (I kind of wished the Lions had taken one more shot at a TD at the end of the first half, but I guess coming up empty might take some air out of your balloon going into 2nd half.)
The coach's confidence that his players could convert in those situations seemed to be a significant factor in the players' "attitude adjustment" and self-confidence compared to "my lifelong Lions".
