Always enjoy seeing pics of your Maple Sugar operation, Carl!
My son tapped his maples on Saturday and was boiling shortly after. He says it was March 23rd last year.

It certainly came early this year. We held out, but a lot of makers around this area tapped 2 weeks ago, some even 3 weeks ago. Hopefully the weather cooperates and we get a few more good runs before the warmer spring weather messes it all up.

1 thing with tapping too early is the sap sugar content is so weak, you burn up 2x as much firewood to get the syrup cooked. Later season has higher sugar levels, but you gamble with the weather not freezing at night to make the trees cycle.

Yesterday, our high temp was in the high 60s. Today the high here is forecast to be is low 20s with a steady 20 MPH westerly wind blowing a bit of snow. It's a perfect day for reading about this year's syrup harvest... from a warm, comfortable desk chair. 1000 gallons is certainly a lot of lifting. Hope you get additional help for the next round. Thanks for sharing a very enjoyable post, Carl.

I always love seeing the Maple Syrup pictures. It is so great that your family does this.
Thanks! I'll show more as the season progresses.

Yeah I got done with the last of the 1000 gallons, got it pumped inside where my wife had been boiling for 8 hours. Parked the tractor, drained the pump, and I walk in exhausted ready to sit down for a few minutes, and she says she has to head home to take our daughter home and get to bed. School day tomorrow. So there I go loading wood into the fire for another 3 hours. :)

It's a labor of love, and insanity.

Not sure if this is the place for this but here we go. Maybe it’s because I’m coming off of a 15 hour shift at work and I’m loopy🤷. Had a slowish day at work and had plenty of time to watch YouTube knife videos. Since when did people start calling patina “the tiners” pronounced teeners? I have no earthly idea why this bothers me so much but I’m ready to die on this anthill. That is all 😂😂😂. Skip this rant by all means.

I haven’t heard anyone say that, but I hate it already. 🤣 That might even be worse than “slippies.”
