"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I think I'll throttle back to the Bicentennial buckle for the rest of the weekend.

Well. I am still alive

The past 18 months have been the worst in my life.
Lost my father last January, then my Toyota tacoma blew up at about 195k miles. Necessitating a new vehicle and new vehicle payments.

The wife who is handicapped got moved to part time status (thus losing her insurance). Which lasted a few months before they started coming up with BS reasons to start writing her up and so she left moving us to a one income household.

Then I lost my mother, back in October.

So we lost 40ish% of the household income. Picked up a new vehicle and new payments (actually had to borrow against my 401k for the down payment). And both parents.

I have picked up extra hours at work and have been working myself to the bone. Pulling from my 401k to keep current on the mortgage payments.

Soooo yeah
Y'all hadnt seen me in awhile, but I am alive.

Hopefully, we applied for disability for my wife and should have an answer over the next few months. Then we can talk about a lawyer for treatment of my wife by her former employers. (State law says you can't apply for disability if you are currently involved in any litigation). I think once we get her settled and I get an opportunity to cut my hours back to normal I will go see the VA about some stuff from my time in active duty (can't hurt right?)

I don't know why I am sharing all this or unloading all this here. But I wanted to share.
An explanation as to why I've disappeared for so long
I'm sorry to hear about what you and your wife are going through. I sincerely hope things turn around for you soon.

I am really sorry to hear about this. Lets hope you look back soon and say to your Wife- "Phew... that was a big Wave that hit us... but we aren't too bad now "
The best of luck to come your way :)

WHO STOLE DURANDAL?
Durandal, the legendary sword has disappeared from the rock where it had been for 1,300 years.
She has been stolen while chained to a rock almost 10 metres above the ground.
The story of her owner is told in the "Chanson de Roland", an eleventh-century poem.
Legend says that the sword has magical powers, it is said to contain the teeth of Saint Peter, the blood of Saint Basil and the hair of Saint Denis, and that an angel offered her to Charlemagne who later gave her to Roland.
Roland tried to break her on a rock before his death at the battle of Roncevaux Pass (Pyrénées mountain, in 778) to prevent her from falling into the hands of the Saracens (in fact it was a Basque embush). Before dying, Roland, after calling in vain for help with his famous horn, throwed the sword, who miraculously travelled hundreds of kilometres and embedded itself in the rock face of Rocamadour.

I never heard all that. The version I heard has Roland dying on top of the sword in hopes of keeping it out of enemy hands, after he was unable to break it.
Seriously? some weasel stole it?

In the school book where I learned to read the legend was told with an accent on Roland blowing his horn till his death. Before he tried to break Durandal but only broke the rock, creating the brèche de Roland, and finally throwed the sword in the air.
Unfortunately it has really been stolen.

Now the knife flippers have gone TOO far!:thumbsdown:
(Was Roland the first "flipper" for his miraculous throw of Durandal?)

Interesting how huge a historical figure can get in legend.

It must have been stolen by person or persons younger than me.

As I remember, he refused to blow the horn for help because he wanted to do it all himself. Then when the death of all his men was assured, he blew so hard that the blood burst out at his temples.

Children's Book of Knowledge, I think I read it in.

Wow, Ryan, sorry you are having such a rough go of it. I have had various tragedies and setbacks in life but they came more widely spaced. Tough to get them all back-to-back like that. I hope you get through it all and come out the other side OK.
Thank you sir.
