"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

When masks were compulsory here for a while....oooh noooh we are being controoled by a big farmer...🙄 One of the best things I saw was in the Narooma plaza carpark..a local elderly hillbilly had his blue mask on but was puffing away on a lungbuster through a hole he'd cunningly poked through the mask.🤣🤣😷😴

He's on smoko, so leave 'im alone

I got a lovely package from Jack Black Jack Black yesterday! I was going to make a post on the main Porch, but I have been very under the weather. So I'll just post this photo today.

I think everyone knows about my love of Scout knives, but this year my son started his own Scouting journey. I am very thankful to have a copy of Scouting for Boys to share with him.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather mate :( I'm glad that those finally got to you! :)

I don't think there are many BF members in my immediate neck of the woods. But I wanted to help spread the word, there is a knifeshow in August close to Titusville, PA. This used to be the old Queen knife show previously.

Friday August 9. Dealer setup 7-11. Open to the public 11:00-4:00.
Saturday August 10. Open to the public 9:00-4:00.

location - 5 miles east of Titusville on Rt. 27

Pleasantville VFD
157 West State St.
Pleasantville, PA 16341

$5 admission, kids 12 and under free. Food will be available.

It's local for me, so I'll be attending both days. Let me know if anyone will be there.

We had some rain last night & it lowered the fire danger, so I decided to burn some boxes I had in the garage. We're out in the sticks, and frequently order from Amazon & Costco. I've become pretty creative at nesting boxes together to save room. There were boxes in the stack from last Fall & Christmas.:)
And a pic of today's carry:

My Cold Steel suburito arrived. Even bigger and badder than I expected.

It's a heavy practice sword for practicing your cuts, not for sparring.
Had to look it up. Lynn made toys for our inner children. (I have a number of the toys he made.) :D

According to the blurb you now need to learn to read Kanji. ;)
The Suburito is a specialized ancient training weapon thats meant to simulate the weight of a real Japanese sword. Primarily intended for solo practice or cutting drills, it inspires respect, as it hits with terrific force. Our interpretation was inspired by a wooden Suburito in Akido 5th Dan, Andrew Demkos private collection. Our President, Lynn C. Thompson trained with it for several months, and resolved to create one for Cold Steel. Injection molded from virgin high strength polypropylene with a long handle and square tip, its enormously resistant to breaking and will never shrink, rot, crack or splinter like a wooden Suburito is prone to do. Its built to provide many years of hard service and, if used faithfully, it will surely make you a better swordsman. It has an elegant wood grain finish and bears the five major precepts of Japanese sword cutting, written in Kanji characters.

My version of the blurb didn't explain the kanji. That should be a shortcut to reading them, though I do have the big red kanji dictionary whose author I've forgotten. Nelson? [Yup, Nelson.]
My Musashi must be downstairs.

Thats's a good bokken book. My focus is all 16th century Italian swordsmanship these days, but it's fun to occasionally cross-train using patterns from some entirely different system.

I also looked up "suburito" before Jer explained what it was. I was quite taken by this line from the Wikipedia entry:
The weight of the suburitō is used for strengthening and conditioning in addition to development of spirit.
"Development of spirit" from the weight of a wooden sword seems like a big plus - modern alchemy! 🤓
