"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

That’s great! :D

His mention of MythBusters reminded me that I watched this video recently and meant to share it here, but for whatever reason I never got around to it. If I remember correctly, I think meako meako has one of these giant display SAKs? It’s interesting to see it taken apart and how it all works.

I shared the video in the post above a few years ago, of Adam Savage (from MythBusters) taking apart and replacing the broken blade on his large Victorinox display “knife.”

Here’s a follow-up to that video, from earlier this year, in which he takes it apart again and replaces his makeshift blade with one that a fan sent him after the first video, which they had made from a mold of the blade on their own display SAK.

Mine has the "backsprings"...Adams has none.🤫.
I got it about 10 years ago for 30bux... it was an impulse purchase not to be missed. When I got home I checked them out on ebuy...last one sold in 1996 for 600usd!!
It was in a toyshop at Milton. The display cabinet had no SAKs but was used for those idiitic looking Bratz dolls...the poor old thing was covered in dust and cobwebs.I asked the guy how much if wanted to sell it...he'd only just bought the place...ummed and aahed and said 30bux...I literally ninja'd my card into his forehead at blinding speed and made off with my prize.
It was not operating.I contacted the shop at Vic in Switzerland for a schematic or plan to get it working....I was told that they remain the property of Vic and sold to me illegally and to send it back to Switzerland ...at my own expense!! That would have cost slightly more than 30aud$....enough said.
I took it to my mate Dozy ...a Harley mechanic and hot rodder who fixed it all up.The punch was broken when my ex put my stuff in storage😒.
Send it back to Switzerland indeed😂😂😂😂

It’s wild that you paid $30 for yours. What a score! 🤯

I remember you telling the story about reaching out to Victorinox and being told it was their property and to send it back. What a load of [insert Aussie swear here]. 🙄

Oddly enough, there’s a third video that Adam Savage did, in between the other two, in which he receives a letter from the CEO of Victorinox, except instead of demanding he return the knife, he was sent a personalized SwissChamp and got an invitation to visit the factory in Switzerland. Guess it pays to be famous, huh? 😐 Whoever responded to your inquiry obviously didn’t realize they were talking to THE meako meako from BladeForums. 😉😁

I just ordered a body-grip trap and setting tongs for the woodchuck that has a hole under my shed.
A live trap might be cheaper, but a 'chuck this big might have enough experience of live traps to stay out of them.
[Nope. Just checked, A 'chuck-sized havaheart would be $5 more from the river than I've spent on the death trap and setting tongs from somebody who doesn't have free shipping.]
And then I'd have to kill it anyway. With a tool allowed by my state (no spears) and my township (no slingshots or air guns).

Maybe I'll make a sheath for my big GI chef knife out of him. If I don't get icked out.

Was able to live-trap

All I ever was able to live-trap were neighborhood cats. If I had ever caught the raccoon I was after, my plan was to drive her across the river and turn her loose in Wisconsin.

I'm sure you've investigated all of your options but if not here are a few from the googler.....
Groundhogs don't like basil, chives, lemon balm, mint, sage, thyme, rosemary, oregano, or Epsom salts.
If that fails and you go with the trap they have some tasty-looking recipes for groundhog stew! 😂 ;)

I've got a raccoon that bothers my bird feeders now and then. I've considered trapping it but we have some feral cats in the neighborhood. I don't want to catch the cats, which also bother my birdfeeders. My neighbor puts out food for the darn things! I'd like to avoid a dispute with my neighbor.

Speaking of pests.
I noticed this colony of hornets on the side of my house. The nest is about two feet high! I'll need to get out there one calm dry evening with a can of hornet spray.

I've to deal with one or two of those nests every year in my attic. I wear a hat i cover with a beekeeper net, and a long sleeve shirt. After the sunset i use a hornet spray and the next morning i poke the nest with a screwdriver and spray again. With good results. Good luck.

The trap shipped today. I want chucky gone, not just avoiding a certain hole. And I don't want to spend that much on spices.
These traps go right in the hole, and you can put a box over them that nothing but the whistle-pig will bother to move. No bait to attract anything.
U of M had a controversy for putting dry ice down woodchuck holes on their own property. They'd already given up on traps because senile hippies would spring them.
This guy recommended some stuff that probably isn't legal anymore:

That's a deusey.

Brake parts cleaner, the chlorinated kind. It drops wasps and hornets out of the air quicker than any wasp and hornet spray, and will render the hive uninhabitable.
