"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Maybe it has to do with aging? I also used to think the same thing about the nail file, and now I find myself substituting SAKs with a nail file for those with the small blade.
It definitely has to do with aging. I'm 81 now, and just a few years ago I could open any knife, even old Remingtons!! Now I sometimes need a Knife pick!!Picks 1.jpg

Yay! Something else to look forward to!
My wife was going through some bookshelves and found this, a gift from my BIL and SIL a decade ago.
A book of blank pages! I guess that says it all! :p 🤣

You can also try GEC's "Tube Popper" blade key. I found it to be the most efficient one. Besides, it is pretty robust and doubles as a household prybar and flat screwdriver sometimes. And, of course, I open GEC tubes with it. ☺️

Don't know why, but I'm feeling a bit nostalgic this morning having run across a picture of my first ship in the U.S. Navy. The USS Henley (DD-762). She was a two stacker (two smoke stacks) and just look at those 5-inch 38 caliber guns (5"/38) -- bore diameter of 5 inches and a gun-barrel length of 38 times 5 inches -- 190 inches or nearly 16 feet). What does this have to do with knives you might be asking yourselves? Just look how she knifes her way through the sea, slicing the waves cleanly. Carry on.

GOSH!!!! I sure am glad I rode my (adult) trike to town this A.M. rather than this afternoon!
Windy ... thunder ... lightning ... rain ... pea size hail ...
Unquestionably if I had gone this afternoon, I would have a headwind going to town and back home ... regardless of which way I had to turn to get to the store. 🙄

Oh well. Could be worse.
The first time I rode it to town (Feb., 2020) I had the headwind every direction, plus rain, sleet, snow, and hail.
an unfun ride.
The next day Guvner Little locked down the state for Covids.
The lockdown for long term health care and senior related was lifted in 2023.
If w left the facility's property (except for doctor and vampire appointments WITH a mask) we were quarantined for 3 weeks plus the time it took for the covid test results to come back. Could not leave our room except for shower day in the middle of the night when everyone was supposed to be sleeping.

Miami Sun?
Mine is purple, with the optional 28-14 7 speed derailleur gear system, and disk rear brake. 😁👍
(Purple was good for a $150 discount for "last year's model ... which I immediately spent for a Wald Giant Delivery basket (same size as the rear basket), a more aerodynamic 1/2 moon handlebar, (I am not fond of "ape hanger" bars) 2 flat glass mirrors, a 6 foot cable & U lock, 28 tooth crank ring, a new "beach cruiser" saddle (standard "tractor seat" saddle is painful - rubs inside of thighs. No way I could make the 5 mile run to Wally's (3x 8 ounce bottles of Slime, tire liners, 2X LED 18650 headlights abd button cell tail lights, matching bell & cup holder, 2x seat bags, soft Bell bike trunk, more cable & U locks, Bell Dashboard wireless cycle computer ... and then the 9 miles from Wally's to home.) For some reason no one wanted a purple trike. 🤯😳
Naturally, it started snowing a couple hours before I left the bike shop ... in early November ... 🙄
When I got home I ordered a set of front and rear duckbill fenders, and a 4 wheel 1,400 pound capacity* garden/nursery cart with convertible handle from the big river site. Blew my first retirement & disability cheque. 🤨
*In Florida I had a 1,000 pound capacity garden/nursery cart from Home Despot ... I only had it overloaded 8 times. 😇 I decided to get a higher load capacity cart so I would be less likely to overload it. The welding shoppe up the block made a pin hitch plate from a piece of 1/4 inch steel plate. 2 "U" bolts attached it to the rear axle frame. (I "think" it works better than a piece of 1/2 inch plywood under the rear basket, which is what I used in Florida. The handle/tow bar is pretty much level now.)
A trailer comes in SOOooo darn handy for carrying groceries, shopping, laundry, cased compound bow, and camping stuff, folding chair ...
I still need to fabricate a fishing rod carrier.

Flea market find!

A box of 26 small, old files of various shapes ranging from coarse to fine. I haven't sorted through them all yet, but there are some Newton File Co. and Nicholson USA in there. Came to about $1 per file. :)

Be advised:

Mya had surgery yesterday to remove a small growth on her eyelid. The vet said it's imperative that she wear this collar for two weeks to keep her from scratching at her eye, or the stitches. She's not a fan of her new fashion accessory.

I'm scheduled for cataract surgery next month. I sure hope they don't put one of those on me!

Our dog developed skin problems towards her end and had to wear a cone for an extended period of time. We termed the hard cone, "the cone of destruction", because she kept running into things with it. (Dogs are highly sight oriented, if she can't see it, it doesn't exist. The cone narrows their field of vision.) We found that ChewyDOTcom has other, less rigid alternatives. (It's not on the menu. Do a site search for "cone" to find them.)

And meanwhile...
