"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Will, I know what you mean... beyond the (northern) polar circle this can´t be used in any way.

Weather in general has some kind of my interesst. So this is a topic which is pretty interessting for me...

I know... I know... ;)

where i live april 15 is generally considered to be the last chance for frost overnight. but i live at about 35 degrees latitude, which as near as i can tell is similar to the very south of spain, parts of tunisia and perhaps sicily. all of which is quite far to the south of most of europe.

Thought I'd post this pic for our resident pipe-smokers :) Taken at Nidderdale Museum in the delightful North Yorkshire town of Pateley Bridge at the weekend.

Wow! I never saw a pipe stem long enough to be used as an emergency snorkel before!

That must have been one cool dry smoke.

Carl.

That's a Churchwarden pattern Carl. They still sell them in my local tobacconists! Being made entirely of clay, they're very fragile though.

But not all are made from clay, and according to Pipes Magazine, they're currently de rigeur with the young and sophisticated! :D

Indeed they are popular again nowadays.
The ones with the long clay stems, at least in the colonial US, used to be used in taverns where they'd be available for the public to use, and you'd just break off the end of the stem when it started to get gross from sharing. :barf: ;)

Oh, I'm familiar enough with church wardens, but they seem to run to an industry standard of abut a 10 to 12 inch stem. Those clays look like they have enough length in them to supply air to a submerged U-boat! Well over the norm for a church warden pattern. Especially for the clays. Clay being very fragile, the stems usually run a little shorter than the norm.

I've been to a lot of pipe shows, and club meetings, but I never ran into a pretty young lady like that puffing away. Maybe I'm on the wrong side of the big pond!
:D

Very interesting. Even today here, if you walk round the edge of a ploughed field, you're likely to see a section of stem or two. I understand that the shorter clay pipes were given away with a tobacco purchase at one time.

Sorry Carl.

I doubt it's any different here! When I was a kid, my dad used to get the odd pipe catolgue through the post, and former British prime minister Harold Wilson, was invariably 'Pipe Smoker Of The Year'! :D

I don't ever recall seeing a woman smoking a pipe, but somewhere in the back of my head is a line from a poem about the London chattering classes (which I'd thought famous, but - very annoyingly - can't find any internet reference to), which I think refers to "a stout-hearted lesbian knocking out her pipe."

LOL! :D I can't find anything about it! One of the other characters is referred to as "twice as old as time", which I always thought a rather good line. Wish I could remember the source! :D

Since the line is in reality "half as old as time", I might copyright that! :D

Carl, Jack, if you guys want to meet some attractive young female pipe enthusiasts, you may venture to Philadelphia and I'll introduce you to a few. Only one of the several is married, so you know... ;)

Very kind offer Alex....:D

I thank you kindly for the offer, but I've got a lady here that shares a pipe with me sometimes, and after over 40 years I'm kind of used to her. Besides, she's a bit better shot than me with her Smith and Wesson revolver, so the risk would be great.:D

Carl.

Howdy pilgrims!

Been away on my jollies.....but I admit I lurked once or twice.

Feeling a bit laggy.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......but hope you are all keeping well?
