Hi Elliott - See if you can get a catch pan one size larger than the cage and place the bottom of the cage on it. Then place a soft thick blanket in the cage along with his water and a toy or two and something with your scent on it - old shirt, etc.. - not a fresh shirt but something you've worn at least a day or two and un-washed.
I've always had shelter/rescue dogs and something I've learned is that older male dogs (6-months and older) coming into a household where another dog has been (especially a male dog) will hike their leg and give a short squirt to mark there territory. That's why we tend to get female dogs but we have had a male in the past. We just have to keep a wary eye out for the hiking and squirting.
Best of luck on your quest for a new companion. Maybe rescue a puppy under 6-months old. It would involve more training but worth the effort. Heck Elliott, get two and they'll be company for eachother when you're not home.
