"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

A question for our English cousins;

When you make a pot of tea over there in the old country, do you still use loose tea, or has the 'tea bag' made it's way over to you all?

I only ask this because, years ago, when Ihad a friend that was from your island, and I made tea, he made great fun of the fact that American's used a little bag to contain the tea. He found it very amusing. I only wonder if the shrinking world production technology has infiltrated the British tea industry?

Carl.

Tea is, as others have said, made with teabags for the most part. Considering that my parents go through about 12 cups a day each, the faff involved in brewing that with loose tea would mean they never got anything else done!

That said, I do know of about 4 houses where if you're offered tea, you get a long list of options before they come around to anything involving a bag...

I worked with a guy years ago who used to use 'instant tea'! It came in granule form. I have to say, I didn't think it tasted THAT bad, but tea in a bag is pretty 'instant'! :D

Instant tea is pretty grim from what I recall, my only experience is milky tea in powder form from a sachet. Not pleasant.

Two old 19th Century philosophers were having the same conversation. One (Proudhon) is advocating traditional methods. The other (Bakunin), is advocating modernizing the experience. Bakunin turns to his friend, and says: "But my dear Proudhon, didn't you yourself say that all proper tea is theft?"

(Runs and finds a place to hide! :D)

Sometimes you see these cool steel capsules (with holes in them) you can open and fill with tea, kind of like a reusable teabag. But most of the time I see people use teabags.

I'm a milk person myself, drinking this hot water just makes my stomach feel all weird (same goes for coffee). I had do drink tea when I was ill as a kid, maybe it's the bad memories :).
I don't mind when people drink normal black tea, but those extremely smelly teas (or infusions?) which are all the rage these days (like rooibos) are the worst. I mean they smell even worse than energy drinks, so I move upwind whenever possible.
Sorry, rant is over (don't take it personally) :D

I'm gonna agree with ya on the infusion stuff. There seems to be a popular trend these dayts of making some awful stuff from herbs and whatever some guru deemed 'healthy' to drink. I'm sorry, but that's NOT tea. Tea is a particular plant that they loaded on fast clipper ships and hauled back from the China trade. Tea is what we yanks dumped in the harbor up in Boston when we turned into a coffee drinking bunch of rebels. Tea is what is served in a civilized country at break time. The stuff made from berries and lemon grass and other weird 'stuff' is not now, or anytime to be considered TEA.

Some people are confused over the huge difference between tea and some infusion. Yeah, it gets me too sturzi!

Carl, lover of plain black tea.

I drink loose green tea, just dropping a few leaves of tea in my mug. They just sink to the bottom and fully unfurl when ready. Important to have freshly drawn and boiled water mind ;)

On a weekend I might make a pot full or use a metal tea ball. Too much faff for the day today though.

I do like my cuppa, but rally don't care for the 'normal' type of black tea that most Brits drink.
I do have the benefit of occasional work trips to china and I usually visit the tea shop when I'm there to stock up.

Well played, sir. A point has been awarded in your favor.

Anyone have traditional music that fills your house on thanksgiving? We listen to Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" at least a few times throughout the day.

Funny you should mention it. I've been sitting on the "Group W" bench for quite some time now. ;)

I drink Pu-erh, Oolong, and Silver Needle white teas. I just ordered some pomegranate infused pu-erh, never tried flavored pu-erh before, but this sounded good!

I used to get black oolong when I lived up north, can't seem to find it around here locally though, might have to try the Asian markets...

There's a great Asian market just down the block from my house. If you like, I'll mail you some. :D

I just bought a car ... that ripped a hole in my budget... believe me. But next year, we´ll be happy with the bigger car. And it´s even an american branded car I bought. Next week I just need to get my tags from the authority. Just wanted to tell :D

What did you get Andi? General Motors, Ford, Chrysler/Dodge? Is that heresy in Germany to not have a BMW, Mercedes Benz or Volkswagen? You mean not everyone where you are drives a Bavarian Motor Works ;)?
