"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Before that, I didn't know either it or the book about an operation I was on there even existed.

I was blindsided a couple of times like that. Once when "60 Minutes" did an in-depth story on one of my international investigations without my prior knowledge or consent...and again when I happened to read a brief description of a portion of that case in this book.

I may never again shave. Shavin' is right up there with necktie wearin'!

Jeez, can we get back to images of good lookin' women? (We need some standards.)

Okay, here's the other female currently in the house. Half-lab half-beagle from the local no-kill shelter. Found out my local gunsmith has a brown one from the same litter.

Mine's also from a no-kill facility. How or why she ended up there as a stray we'll never know. As to her mix...Boxer and any number of guesses. I've seen several images of somewhat similar looking dogs online that had a number of different breeds mixed with Boxer, from Lab to Heeler to Pit to your guess is as good as mine.

Having a lazy Sunday here, and was just surprised to hear a song I've not heard for years on a modern radio channel - Al Jolsen and Bing Crosby singing The Spaniard That Blighted My Life. Don't think I've heard it since I was a kid and had previously missed the traditional knife content! :D

Been hitched to that brown haired little gal I met on a pistol range in Texas, 42 years ago. She's still my bride. If I call her old lady, I have to keep in mind she's a better shot than me!

Glad I'm not the only one whose significant other is the sharpshooter in the relationship...

She'd whup me at anything other than using the SA80 (and that's because she hates the thing).

I received this gift from an Army buddy, an Army Chaplain, and his brother in '96 or '97 after I gave another away. My son has recently claimed it is one I must keep as he wants it. This SMLE No 1 Mk III* is from 1916. I've been blessed with generous friends most of my life. Truly blessed.

I wish my wife would shoot, but she really doesn't like to. She used to bring on the bacon (literally) that she won at turkey shoots. Neither of my daughters are interested either. The eldest was taught to shoot (air rifles) by (Edward James) Jim Land (Jr.), the father of modern USMC sniping (trained Carlos Hathcock as an instructor and was his Commanding Officer). She was a good shot too. None have any interest, but my son and I hit the range once most weeks.

Your son has a good eye at least ;). My girlfriend's father has a good few Lee-Enfields of different ages and models, (his safes have bolts boxes labelled "Enfield" and "Other", and the Enfield is the larger one...) but that picture was actually taken at a re-enactment event using someone else's (and blank rounds, because relatively few open air museums come with a range).

While she likes the old-school rifles and scroll grips, I struggle with rifles that don't have a pistol grip on them. Maybe it's that she's been shooting since age 9-ish and I had to wait until I was 13 to get my hands on anything other than an air rifle, with the Cadets at school using SMLE's converted to .22 (The No. 8 target rifle) and the neutered SA80, the Cadet GP:

Elliot, if you're really curious about her, you could get a DNA sample analysed. You can trace a pedigree back through numerous generations with DNA. I've no idea about the cost, and I would expect that it isn't cheap but it would give you a definite answer to her parentage. She's beautiful regardless of course.

Thanks, Paul. I've actually read some info online about some of these shelter dog DNA tests and the opinions seem to vary quite a bit. Some of the tests seem to contradict others and getting a sample without contamination (from the swab) is a mixed bag as well.

I think I'll be content to speculate...but as I recall, the tests are not prohibitively expensive and some shelters offer a discounted rate from what I understand.

I appreciate your bringing it up. I'm sure the results would be interesting, regardless. (Probably tell me she's a cross between a Chihuahua and a Yorkie. LOL!)

This is our shelter dog Coco. She had her birthday last month and we'll have had her three years to the day on Christmas Day this year. I don't need a DNA test to know that she loves us - besides, who'd want to stick a shelter dog with a needle anyway. These shelter dogs only give and give. Coco is half Austrailian Shepherd and half German Shepherd. She's the size of a German Shepherd.

No needles, Ed, it's an oral swab. And yep, there's no doubting their devotion. I've only ever had shelter / rescue dogs and don't think I'd ever go another route.

Oh, I know about the swab Elliott. I was just funning a bit.:) We too love shelter/rescue dogs. This is our Dachshund "Hootie". It's a picture of her when she was just a pup - few months old. I can't find a more recent picture of her. She is 9-years old now and still a real "Hoot" (pun intended).

Edited to correct Hootie's age.

Well now, Ed, there's another thing we have in common.
We both have dogs which are 1/2 German Shepherd and 1/2 Australian Shepherd. And both dogs have the size of the German.

But ours looks pretty much like a very large Australian Shepherd.
