"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Next week I'll be spending a few days in Erlangen, Germany, which is just north of Nuremberg. Anyone know if there are any good knife shops that feature some traditional wares?

Hi Mark!

I, personally know no knife shops in Erlangen, it´s far from where I live. But if you have the time you can travel the 140 kilometres to Hof to this shop http://www.roedter-messer.de/ One of the most interessting knife shops I´ve seen for german traditional knives in general. The lady that drives the the shop is a very kind lady. Really like 'em!!

In Nuremberg there are several knife shops like Frankonia or several other knife shops.

I hope this helps - a visit to Messer Rödter in Hof is definitelly worth a visit - but you should take a phone call before.

Thanks, Andi. Definitely no chance to make a side-trip to Hof, I'm afraid. But I'll keep my eyes open when we're walking around in Nuremberg.

Been cutting up food a lot with my Lierenaar lately. No pics, but I can tell you...what a slicer. Absolutely amazing. No resistance, no drag, wide cutting surface. I love it! I really need to get that Aitor Castor soon, but I'm still in doubt between the small or medium version. I've got a thing for the smaller knives like an Opinel 7, small Douk-Douk and small Higonokami, but I'm guessing a medium castor would be better in the kitchen...

I find the small Castor very good in the kitchen, but there are certainly situations where a longer blade would be an advantage. For example, a smaller blade is not so convenient for chopping garlic, you can't really chop at all, you have to sort of cut at it. The job gets done, but a longer blade would do the job easier for sure.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I have similar thoughts when cutting up food with, say the small Douk-Douk or an Opinel 7 or 6. They get the job done but something larger would be more efficient. However, I'm sure I wouldn't like that larger blade in my pocket. I might have to settle with the small Castor first. I can always get a medium one afterwards.

It amazes me that, since you and others first showed that blade here on BF, it has become so widely available on that river side, and the digital bay :)

Yes, the small size is very convenient for carry (as well as complying with our crazy UK knife laws) :)

Really? :D

Yeah, really :D. The speed at which they became available at least. BF, and especially yours as well as others posts must have sold a pretty good amount of them. Good on ya!

Blimey, should have bought shares! :D

Hope everyone has a very happy New Year's Eve and a great 2014 :)

Jack,

I’ve had decades to figure out America’s idiot version of political correctness. That’s not long enough to be reconciled, but at least I understand the danger zones.

I have no clue about the British version. From here it looks like knives are evil, self defense gets you locked up, and football hooligans get away with anything.

So I wonder: What has become of Punch and Judy? Has political correctness destroyed them? Are there still Punch and Judy shows at village fêtes?

In any case, Happy New Year to you. And to P & J as well.

I make sure that everyday I lock up someone with a knife or someone defending themselves and then I shake a hooligan by the hand. ;)

I couldn't tell you how many times this conversation has reared it's ugly head in the forum. It's Hogmanay, let's not get into all this again.

Have a fantastic end to 2013 everybody, and I wish you all the best for the coming new year!

That's just where you live! ;) :D

Have a good one Paul - and I very much hope you're not having to work mate

I'm not actually sure about Punch & Judy shows Raymond, but then I can't remember the last time I went to a village fete. I shall investigate further! :D

Best wishes again everybody :)

Paul, I hope your shift isn't rowdy tonight, if you have to work, and I hope it doesn't get rowdy enough for you to be called in.

Happy new year everyone!

My apologies, Pmew, Jack. I typed without thinking.

Normally I know better than to diss somebodies home.

Though if England's version of PC is crazier than America's, that's a signal achievement.

Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year To All!
