"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Right. I think I'll be out of the game for a while, as in; my wife just handed me a list of "things we have to have for the baby". So no forum knife for Paul. No almost forum knife either (Eriks jack) and no more random fanciful buying. I have my first custom folder on the way and then that'll be me until wee pmew/pmewette arrives. Let's be honest though, a wee'un is far more important. :)

Wait, neither the Forum Knife nor the Almost Forum knife were on the list.

When's the baby due?

Lol, strangely, Claire didn't think a forum knife was a priority item! :D

December 13th. I'm rather excited, we chose not to learn the gender until it happens.

How are you keeping P?

First, congratulations to pmew.
Second, I am not sure this is the right spot for this but, I did not want to start a new thread and I don't think the knives are old enough to fit in the "Old Knives" thread. I went over to visit my lovely wife's parents and her dad pulled these knives out to share with me . I snapped a few pics so I could share with you. I do not know much about them except the Swing Guard was confiscated from a student by my wife's grandfather many years back. I will let the pics tell the rest.

I was told that the swing guard is most likely a Wilbert. It is hard for me to make out the tang stamp because I'm old and can't see. :)
This is a pretty nice ol' Bowie that I also do not know anything about other than I like it :D

I hope you find them as cool as I do.

Believe me, the baby will need so much. I´ve gone through all this last year. Max is now five months old and the most cloths we bought him are almost too small. This is a neverending story ;) But the furniture and the vehicle for babys (I don´t know the english word) etc are the real expensive things. But it´s just nice to buy them and see how these things come together in your house.

No forum knife, why?

Ok, you cleared it here. :D :p I bought my knives from an extra pot I was hiding and always some money back for the knives and shooting etc etc :o :devilish:

But honestly, she´s right - a BFC knife is no priority item. I don´t think that roundabout 100 $ will be too much in general.

However - I wish You, Claire and the baby all the best for the rest of the pregnancy. My wife always says to me, that it was a great time for her.

Just a tad bit.

I'm taking my little girl camping for the first time next month (she's 4). Nothing too challenging, it'll simply be an introduction to the outdoors. Making fire, sleeping under the stars, with some hiking, and hopefully some swimming thrown in. Mostly my goal is to get away for a few days, and show her that it is quite possible to go without electronics.

I'm getting a bit restless, the trip is still a few weeks out. Nothing to do for now other than get the gear in order. These are the knives I'll be bringing.

The SAK lives in my pack, the stag slipjoint in my pocket. The puukko is my belt knife. The criollo looking knife stays in camp, while the khukuri is coming along in case I feel the need to chop something. I'm bringing the two bushcraft knives at the request of my wife, who asked me to bring her something to "whittle" with.

Overkill? Most definitely. But we'll be car camping, so I don't mind the weight. :p Besides, if my wife can bring quad chairs and an eight-person tent (for three people...lol), I can certainly bring along some sharp and shinies.

Christian,
you're restless, you have your knives ready, your wife has the tent, your daughter brings herself and that's all that matters....why wait for weeks? Everything seems ready :p
By the way, now we're talking...tell us a bit about the two bushcraft knives (the one on the right, and the one inside the sheath) :o
Looking forward to see how it goes :)

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the weekend we're going is the first one we can get away. We're booked solid with family events and other obligations. I love coming from a big family, but sometimes it gets to be a bit much.

The one on the right was made by John Landi. 1095 blade, cocobolo handles. I don't use it much because the edge is a bit thick for my liking. I'll thin it out eventually, but since I have other knives that I already like more I keep putting it off.

The one in the sheath is a Spyderco Bushcraft. It was a gift from Jack, AKA yablanowitz. O1 blade, spalted maple handles. Here's a picture of it.

In my opinion the best fixed blade spyderco ever made, but I heard a tale of woe about it; I heard that that they had a problem with some of the scales, they weren't properly dried before they were applied and there were some splitting issues and peeling away from the tang with quite a significant number. So much so that they issued a product recall, sold what remained that was worth it as factory seconds and stopped production.

I know very little of Spyderco really, is this true? Certainly not of yours, it looks awesome Christian!

It's entirely true Paul. This was one of those seconds. On the side you see the scale peeled back from the tang. The other side was worse and the scale ended up splitting at the front pin. Not a big problem on a using knife. A little superglue to fill in the gap and the crack and voilà! All fixed.

BTW, I just read the recent happenings in this thread. Congrats! Your knife buying habits will never be the same again. ;)

:) thanks buddy!

Yesterday afternoon over the Rappahannock River not far from my house I saw two bald eagles in flight not fifty yards away at the same level over the river that I was. One mature and the other immature with the mature one chasing the immature one. Pretty cool.

Passing the baton.

Carls very touching mini novella has reminded me of what happened here in the islands last week, and which I forgot to mention.

Some of you may be aware that there is a particular sporting event being hosted in Scotland this year (Glasgow to be precise) and the Isle of Lewis is the most North Westerly part of Scotland and indeed the UK. As such circumstances permitted me to get this quick snapshot from inside my control room, taken with the baton when it passed through Stornoway.

**Warning. Cheesy grin alert!**

Excellent Paul, nice to see you when you're not wearing a onesie! :D when I first glanced at the pic, I thought you were holding up something you had confiscated from a day-tripping schemie! :D

My prayers go out to the passengers and families of the Malaysian Airlines plane MH17 that crashed in Ukraine.

Mine prayers as well - whoever might have done this act of terror should be punished.
I was shocked when I saw this yesterday on the tv-screen and it makes me sad to see things like this happen.
