Paul - that´s cold indeed. At least for the coast  when the wind is blowing it will seem like -20° C. This is the temperature that is common here in bavarian winters (not as warm as this one, for luck). When the diesel engines don´t start when out during night and all these things. In winter 2012/2013 we had -24° C as a record at about half past five in the morning when I was heading out to work directly on my front door.

But you and yours will manage that, Paul :) warmer days will come... the days are almost getting longer and the sun is getting on power. But the winter over the UK was very strong this season. I also saw this here on TV. We just had some nights with frost like -10° C this morning, but that is normal here. The handknitted pollover I got from my Mum last year comes to duty on those days ;)

I too am sorry to hear of the loss of a faithful companion.
Outstanding photo Paul -a breathtaking view.
I too am having issues with the weather. I don't want to upset anyone by droning on about how good the weather is in Australia but this afternoon it was soo hot I nearly rang Janette to come and pick me up from work and take me to the harbour for a swim. BUT NO !I stayed strong I didn't give in. I got on that mtn bike and rode home -a lot of it is up hill too. I was reeeally sweaty when I got home and there is no beer in the fridge.:(.
I visited the UK in 1986-February. The coldest winter for 150years at the time -never got above 1degC for the first 2 weeks and -17degC at night. There was 12 foot of snow covering the whole country.

Good for you Meako, hope you got that beer situation sorted out :D

I can remember having to drag my eldest around on a sledge as her pushchair was no use! :D

I would have been two or three in 1986. I don't remember it but I've seen photos of me and my elder sister being gleefully swallowed by snowdrifts!

Hope you have a great Burn's Night Paul, and that the weather doesn't interfere with the haggis hunting ;)

Unfortunately I have to work the late shift on Burns night, but I'm hoping to get out onto the moor with the lads earlier in the day for a hunt. There were quite a few spotted on the Arnish moor just to the north of the village when the snows were down a day or two ago - they're much easier to spot in the snow :D

Sorry to hear that Paul, hope your shift is quiet at least, and have a great day out on the moor :)

Dan, it's always a tough call to make when the time comes, and when you know it is that time, it is a gift we can give to our beloved pets. Sadly I had to make that choice yesterday for Bart, my two year old grey cat. He had recurring medical issues, and yesterday morning he did not get up for breakfast. I take peace in the fact that he is not suffering anymore...

Duane, I am very sorry to hear about Bart. My condolences.

Paul and Jack, y'all stay warm over in the UK. I'm dreading the heat and drought this summer, but right now we've got the good life: ripe oranges and grapefruit on the trees, cool and sunny days.

Thanks Scott, sounds lovely. I'm lucky in having good central heating and the wardrobe of a former professional climbing equipment tester! :D  A peat fire, warm Range-Rover, and spectacular mountain views probably trumps that though! ;)

No worries JB
got that swim in and some beach cricket and then stopped by Keiraville Keg and purchased some cider and a rum based product called "smooth 'n shifty"-its rum and sarsparilly-
yeah.

And to think you could have been a foreman at John Players by now! ;) :D Sounds like the good life my friend. The hat you sent me has been keeping my ears warm :)

Ick. Jury duty. I have been knifeless all day.
Imagine that. At the end of the jury selection process, I was excused... How normal.

Several decades ago when my occupation was listed as "chemist", I was always selected.
Now that my occupation is listed as "aerospace engineer" I am always excused from the proceedings.

I do know a few engineers who can only see black and white. But most see Gray just fine, thank you.

i got jury duty monday :(
hopefully when i call in sunday evening, they will have settled out of court and wont need me

wish me luck!

Thought you were between jobs, so what's the problem? Jury duty is really interesting, you should look forward to it. If you've never served on one, it is an educative experience.

JB-I've got another winter hat for you. It's the kind with the wooly flaps that tuck under the chin and keep the ears toasty warm.
Its a fire brigade "cold climate" hat. That basically means you only get one if you get to be stationed at Perisher in the Australian Alps (don't get too excited). Ironically and very typically my beloved employer of 30 years issues really good cold weather hats but really poor sun hats-rubbish to be exact.
Guess which we wear the most by far.Clue-I've worn 3 clean tshirts today because its so h*t and h*mid.

Hey, thanks Meako! I'd never heard of Perisher before, what a great name! It's certainly perishing here today my friend! :D

My sympathies, Frank. My situation Thursday was just like yours, except I ended up being selected for a 7-person jury for a civil case (landlord-tenant dispute) scheduled for trial on Feb. 17. This is the first time in many opportunities that I was not excused; usually one side or the other dismisses me with a "peremptory challenge", and my impression in many cases is that they didn't want a "math prof" on the jury. But yesterday, I was the 6th potential juror who was "voir dired" for the final spot on the jury; the first 5 were entertaining but very unusual, and by the time I got called up, I think the judge and both attorneys were getting tired of the proceedings and were happy to take me as someone who seemed relatively normal. (The lawyers may have run out of peremptory challenges by that time, too; don't know what their limit is.)

So, I don't mind doing my civic duty (even though missing classes will be inconvenient), and, as John points out, I think my first experience as a juror will be interesting and instructive. But I don't look forward to the security screening and going knifeless for another day!

I´m looking forward on tomorrow :)

I saved some money the last year and I gonna buy another lever action gun. It is a Rossi, in .38 special - .357 mag. with a tuned trigger and sights; an octagon 24 inch barrel. :D

Isnt it great to get, when saved so long for something? No matter whatever it is. I even limited buying knives due to this firearm.

Yeah, up here I am not sure any of the engineers I work with have been selected for duty. As soon as you put Engineer on the form it is pretty much over. I do know of at least one IT guy that used that knowledge inappropriately. Steven
