"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

While out shopping for a new computer for my wife today, I couldn't get out of my mind the calculation of which knives the money could buy......This could be a bad sign, do I need therapy?:o

As some of you guys might know, I´m an active shooter at a local german shooting club. Well, so far so good. But we had a fire at the range on wednesday. One wooden wall and a lot furniture got destroyed. For luck, nobody got hurt. But we´ll need some days to clean up the mess. As it is, we have a challenge for military surplus rifles (100 metres) and lever action rifles (50 metres) where shooters from whole Lower Bavaria will be there. Kind of strange as there is the glass and ashes all around. Tomorrow we´ll get a whole day a cleanup...

I am sorry to hear about your range fire.

Best wishes on the clean up!

Take care.

Cate

Jack Knife,

Great pictures. Thank you.

I have not been in the District of Columbia in many, many years.

I am glad that you and your wife had a good trip.

I enjoy woodworking on the side, and in particular, I work with large-live edge wood that I harvest and have sawn to my specifications for various "rustic" furniture projects. I am working on a black walnut, live-edge, hall table for a friend's birthday and needed to see some old ways of joining plank legs to tops. I was scrolling through some "Woodwright Shop" videos and discovered a couple of videos that reveal an actual inletting tool from the cutlery industry in Sheffield. A collector loaned Roy Underhill the passer drill. The passer drill uses templates to "rout" any design possible i.e. any complex shield you could imagine. Perhaps you have see this before, but here are two videos that describe the tool, its use, and a demonstration. Enjoy!

On this first one, please skip forward to 14:30.

Robin:
I wish I had his talent. The piece I'm working on is an outer 3rd plank that is hourglass. I won't be book matching it. Actually the book match plank will be used for the two end plank legs ;).

Practice makes perfect, but it's hard to beat a George Nakashima dovetailed live edge table. Would love to see pics of your table when it's finished, with a knife of course. :D

Very best regards

Robin

For the last three weeks it was beautiful weather except on the weekends, and the forecast for the coming weekend looked bad yet again.
So I had enough and moved my weekend by two days, I'll go to work when it rains on Saturday/Sunday.
I enjoyed two beautiful days in the mountains:

Preparing cooking utensils.

There was plenty of bear's garlic, ramsons or whatever you call it to make the risotto a bit tastier.

My camp.

And on my way back.

It's funny how in photos it never looks as steep as when you're there. But if you ever went up 45 degrees you know that you don't want to slip. :D.

Forgot to take pictures on the summit, was too busy enjoying the view. But that's not bad either. :)

Welcome the newest member of the leghog clan. My first grandchild was born at 0251 EDT on Thursday, 23 April 2015. She was 4 weeks early. Tiny at 4 pounds 6 ounces. Emery Christel. We've called her TLO (the little one) since the beginning, and she lived up to that name. I'll probably call her TLO as long as we both live. My new name is Pops. TLO is in the NICU, but she's ok as is her mom. Haven't yet held TLO but got to touch her and kiss her. I cried. My daughter laughed. Her mom, my oldest daughter, should be discharged today. Don't know about TLO. Only thing keeping her is her in the NICU is her blood's bilirubin levels and the risk of jaundice.
