"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

They reckon that, in terms of stress, moving home is second only to losing a close relative. I was thinking of moving a couple of years ago, but found the task too daunting. Hope it works out for you and Karen Carl, I dare say that heat with help your RA, and I'm looking forward to hearing about your adventures in Texas

We've only moved nine times...I expect one to an even smaller house without all the yard work might be in the cards. It's a hassle but doesn't hurt to change everyone once in a while.

I hate moving, probably because as a kid, my dad was a home builder and we would constantly be moving one block over or across the street. Stupid but dad had to sell a house, even it was ours!

Moving here is not so popular. Here is a term "Dreimal umgezogen ist soviel wie einmal abgebrannt." "Moving three times is as much as burnt once."

I moved almost four times in my life but it was in early 20s so it was not so bad for me.

I am not a big fan of moving either. I was an air force brat and even in adulthood I am about to undertake my 6th move (I wont count those earlier ones). My wife just finished her PhD and got her first tenure track job at the University of Virginia at Wise. At least this time they gave us some money to hire movers.

We are unfortunately going the opposite direction though. Here in SC we might get a dusting of snow every other year. We pay for it during our miserably hot and humid spring/summer/fall seasons, but I have grown used to it.

We are renting a house in Big Stone Gap, VA and they were all complaining of the heat wave where it tipped 90 3 or 4 days in a row. My wife and I just smiled. 90 in July is a nice day to cut grass here in Columbia.

Good luck on the move. I find it nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time.

I didn't mind moving when I was younger, and have lived many places, but now that I'm older, I'm not sure my back is up to moving all the bloody penknives! :D

Edit - I was just trying to count how many times I've moved in my life, and ran out of fingers and toes! No wonder I hate moving! :D

In my short 34 yrs orbiting the sun I have moved over 25 times. I think I have it down to a science. :D And no, family was/is not military. At least 21 of those times was after I moved out of my parents. I have found heavy duty garbage bags are my best friend each time.

All the best getting acclimated

I bought the house I'm in now in 1980. 35 years and no stress of moving or mortgages. :D

Very wise Bob! :)

Yeah, my folks never moved once! The worst was when I moved to France - carpets, furniture, kids, the lot - missus took the kids and I took all our worldly goods in a HUGE van - We moved back again six months later!

Atta boy Bob! That's where I'm headed right now too! No more house payments! I'm very close.

Can't do that and have a career in the military. Last several moves I was authorized 17,500 pounds not including professional books and items. That's a load of stuff, but easily accumulated with a family of five. And with a family of five, garbage bags at the curb side save you only so much hassle

So it’s old Bavarian wisdom?

It's old in America as well. Benjamin Franklin said, “Three moves equals one fire.”

You can probably find the same proverb in Mandarin Chinese and Demotic Etruscan. :D

I bought the house after I got discharged. :D

Oh, I understood leghog. The career thing just wasn't for me. My brother chose that life and much like yourself, has moved around a lot.

Good luck with the move Carl. I've moved several times in my life. The last time was the first time I've used a moving company and, Man that was nice!

The change of scenery, politics and weather sound real nice!

MOving is nothing new to me, I did a lot when I was young. In the army I was always going to some new post, but then all my worldly belongings fit in the backseat of my VW beetle. One duffle bag of uniforms, and one duffle bag of civvies. But wife and kids changed all that.

We downsized in 1991, and sold the house and moved into a small town home as empty nesters, and it was nice. Took the occasion to get rid of a lot of stuff. Now we're doing it again. I can't believe all the stuff that builds up in the basement and attic when you stay i one place too long. The Salvation army store and the Waging Tales animal shelter thrift store have got a windfall off of us. Karen and I keep running into stuff and we look at each other and ask "when did we use this last?"

This time around we're really lightening the load. Nothing is going to remain that the two of us can't move without help. Nothing like getting "older" to appreciate rattan furniture.:D And we're not going to need a lot of heavy duty winter clothes. I figure there's an IKEA just down the road in Round Rock Texas, so we can just sell off here and resupply there. It's not like we have priceless heirlooms, the kids got all that stuff years ago.

We're actually looking forward to the move with a unexpected degree of excitement. New ground to explore, and some old ground to re-discover. We're definitely going back to the range where we met. "A Place To Shoot" just off FM1604 in San Antonio. And we're keeping the tent to go camping on Padre Island, where I proposed and she said yes. There's Garner State park, and Canyon Lake. New ground and old to go to.

The house is going on the market soon as we get back from our trip out to California. Spend a week or so with daughter Jess and family, a weekend at Mammoth Lake, then a dash home at the end of the month to finish up small details so the house will go up for sale on the 1st of August. After moving Karen's sister and then our son, a nice little vacation and toad trip is welcome. I still love a good road trip. :D

Good luck with the move Carl. I hope all goes smooth and you and the misses get settled without too much stress. My wife and I just paid off our modest home and plan to be here until we die. Such is the plan. A little home in the country and a simple life, well as simple as this busy world allows. Keep in touch as much as you can and we will keep a place here for you.

Chris
