"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Between the ages of 18 and 33 I moved 26 times, most of those moves occurring between the ages of 22 and 29. I hadn't quite realized how often I had moved until I had to list every place I had lived in the previous 15 years for a clearance application.

Here is a picture of my 12 yr. old on Father's day. Temps were in the high 80's, wind gusting (and changing directions constantly) and we had a blast. Her score was nothing to write home about but that is fine for her first match. She is shooting at the closest target of the match (350 yards). She did get two hits (out of 8 shots) on the farthest target (805 Yards) and so was pretty happy. Steven

When I couldn't sleep last night, I tried counting addresses, never quite got to the end! :D

So it’s old Bavarian wisdom?

It's old in America as well. Benjamin Franklin said, “Three moves equals one fire.”

You can probably find the same proverb in Mandarin Chinese and Demotic Etruscan. :D

LOL... yeah propably this term moved around the world ... moved by whom?! The ones that moved or the ones that stayed back or either everyone of them? :p

Well the Chinese and who else knows has all of that information and much more now. The OPM hack of over a year ago compromised the entire clearance application data (everything in every application/questionaire) of no less than 21.5 million people and counting. It'll be even worse when the entire story is finally told.

Unfortunately, my data also from two careers for me; military and DoD civilian and several clearances.

Carl, I hope your move is uneventful and you and your wife arrive safe with what you decide to take with you.

I counted up my moves, etc. and came up with 2 countries, 5 states, 21 cities and 28 homes over my life. Even though I'm retired now, I doubt I've moved for the last time. It's never "fun," but it can be an adventure. My wife and I moved back and forth between the U.S. and South Korea a few times, those were always adventures. It's interesting what can break when you ship your whole household overseas and back (literally)!

Hello everybody,
I haven't been around much lately. I've all sorts going on but I still look in here occasionally. Looking over these pages I see there has been joy and sadness in equal measure recently.

Anyway, to join the topic at hand; over 31 years, 4 countries, 8 counties and 14 homes. Oddly, I can remember them all very clearly.

Between the South Carolina department of revenue and OPM (twice) I do not think I have any private information left to give. I just got my letter a few weeks back that I was apart of the latest and greatest OPM "leak".

But hey, they gave us free identity theft monitoring for a year!

Awesome. I'll be a mediocre 35 this fall...I wish I could shoot that well but the shakes are setting in; 11 years of getting hit in the head (mostly voluntarily) may have taken a toll.

I shot my best pistol round in three years since my car wreck at 25yds this past weekend. With a Ruger 22/45 Lite no less. That's a small bull :)

Did you get T-boned or did you hit a utility pole while drifting that Scion! Nice shooting by the way, I used to shoot IDPA at a club for a while but the program slowly fizzled out. I didn't feel like driving an hour or more to join a new range to keep competing. Too much time and hassle

Looked into moving to California a couple of years ago with my job. Spent a ton fixing the house up for sale and ended up deciding to stay and I changed jobs (same company, though). At least we have a freshly painted and fixed up house.

Grew up and lived in one house from birth to college. 4 different dorm rooms and three apartments in college. Seven apartments (with or without roomates) before I got married. We lived in the last apartment for 4 years before we bought our house, been in it ever since, 22 years now. A lot easier to move around a lot when you are young and too broke to afford much furniture. U-Haul truck, couple of buddies and a case or two of beer and you're moved in one day.

Hope you like the heat. Been living in the south my whole life. It's not fun when you get those month-long runs of highs near 100 every single days, with lows in the upper 70 and even 80s. Some years better than others. When California is baking like they are now, we get a little relief. Last year was downright pleasant. But the near 100 stuff is about to hit.

I'm not certain how much good my information from 30 years ago is going to do anyone. I won't hold my breath waiting for notification that my records were revealed. Probably still on microfiche.

Heh, I only wish I was good enough to to drift a FWD car that well. I've had severe insomnia for almost half my life and was very sick a few days prior to my wreck. My body shutdown. Sleeping while driving a Stage 4 turnabout modded car is a very bad idea. I woke up in a turn, yanked the wheel, and spin into a curb...karma put a hydrant dead center on my left hip.

My uncle moved 4 times in the same suburb including 3 moves in the same street. In Nottingham. It's like they pop round for a visit and decide to move. Personally I hate moving house.
Done a few moves back in the old days when all the furniture I had was made of milk crates. My current address is the second house Janette and I looked at when house hunting whilst dwelling in my parents garage. The only house we've ever "owned" (don't own it yet of course).
I have however helped many of my friends move over the years.
When you own a Ute people think you are some sort of expert removalist.
They ring and say "Jon can I borrow your Ute?" which translates to
"Jon can you do 15 trips with your Ute back and forth over 3 three days and help me carry everything up 3 flights of stairs to my latest pad? Oh and did I mention not having to pay you or pay for fuel or even buy you a case of beer?"
This situation became particularly irksome when people who I hadn't heard from for a long time would ring and ask if I still had my Ute.

Once I helped a friend move. Not someone I was close to. She was in our crowd, more the buddy of my current bed mate.

Hot summer day. Load everything into trucks and vans. Drive to her new place.

On the way I bought a six pack of Anchor Porter. Everyone was glad to drink a bottle of beer.

My lover was the only one who got the pun. :D

MOving is nothing new to me, I did a lot when I was young. In the army I was always going to some new post, but then all my worldly belongings fit in the backseat of my VW beetle. One duffle bag of uniforms, and one duffle bag of civvies. But wife and kids changed all that.

We downsized in 1991, and sold the house and moved into a small town home as empty nesters, and it was nice. Took the occasion to get rid of a lot of stuff. Now we're doing it again. I can't believe all the stuff that builds up in the basement and attic when you stay i one place too long. The Salvation army store and the Waging Tales animal shelter thrift store have got a windfall off of us. Karen and I keep running into stuff and we look at each other and ask "when did we use this last?"

This time around we're really lightening the load. Nothing is going to remain that the two of us can't move without help. Nothing like getting "older" to appreciate rattan furniture.:D And we're not going to need a lot of heavy duty winter clothes. I figure there's an IKEA just down the road in Round Rock Texas, so we can just sell off here and resupply there. It's not like we have priceless heirlooms, the kids got all that stuff years ago.

We're actually looking forward to the move with a unexpected degree of excitement. New ground to explore, and some old ground to re-discover. We're definitely going back to the range where we met. "A Place To Shoot" just off FM1604 in San Antonio. And we're keeping the tent to go camping on Padre Island, where I proposed and she said yes. There's Garner State park, and Canyon Lake. New ground and old to go to.

The house is going on the market soon as we get back from our trip out to California. Spend a week or so with daughter Jess and family, a weekend at Mammoth Lake, then a dash home at the end of the month to finish up small details so the house will go up for sale on the 1st of August. After moving Karen's sister and then our son, a nice little vacation and toad trip is welcome. I still love a good road trip. :D

Have fun on your trip!

Keeping things simple in your move is the way to do it!

You go Karen and JK!

Cate
