"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. Cold start today at about -17F this morning. Here are a few pics of our new counter top that my father in law built for us. Made entirely out of end cut maple. My father in law only has one arm(lost it in a RPG attack in Vietnam), so this was quite a project. He spoke of an astounding amount of dust and waste. The plugs are made of walnut and are decorative on the front and hiding dowel holes on the sides. Finished in walnut oil, and we will maintain it with a beeswax/walnut oil wax from Mahoney's. Letting it come up to room temp before I screw it down and seal the back seam with silicone. We cook a lot and have fine kitchen knives, so this will quite a joy to work on, almost 6 ft in length. The blocks of end cut are all the same size, even if they don't look like it in my meager photos. Thanks for looking

That looks like it will be a joy to use, Kris! Very nice!

My wife has gotten into the Christmas spirit and is putting up the tree and decorations which is great but she made me put away my knife displays I had in the living room and lock my shotguns and long rifles I had in the living room in the gun safe. She said during the holidays our living room would not look like a man cave. I suggested we just put lights around them and that was shot down too. Anyone else have this kind of problem during the holidays?

Thanks Duane, it took a while for him to say yes(couple of years)! Hope all is well with you my friend.

Only when the grandkids come over. I voluntarily put away the knives as I don't want to take any chances with curious fingers. It's mainly a safety issue with me. My one and only revolver is put away also as my daughter-in-law is "uncomfortable" with guns. Sigh, such is life.

My wife lets me spread out my stuff throughout the living and dining rooms normally, so no complaints here. But then she has kind of commandeered the office/library that I thought was going to be my "cave." I only use my easy chair up there in the bleak mid-winter when it is coldest.

Well, I think your idea of putting lights around them was a tasteful nod in the direction of festivities  Should be white candlelights though, don't want any coloured stuff spoiling the hue of stag & bone, walnut&metal :D

I was thinking about hanging a few knives from the tree this year for a change :D:D But I kind of suspect this will be met with opposition....:mad:

Hi my friends

Just wanted to share with you the latest on our mate Bob, I have tried to ring Bob a few times but he is flat out tired - but he got back to me and aske that his mates who are so supportive be updated.....
He has had another stage of Treatment - this by far has been hardest on him so far, but his team feel this is the best way with a positive outcome - he just has to ride it out a bit more to advance.
So - Bob Is tired from this last operation, I am sure he will come back in here and say hi - but he said that he was tired even typing out his hello to me - so hopefully soon his strength will come back a bit at a time and we can hear from him soon.

I sent Bob a picture of a Nurse whom I hoped would lift his spirits :D, as I am sure they would if she walked in the room looking the way she did lol, I really miss Bob on this Forum while he is temporarily away and I wish with all my heart and positive thoughts to Bob a continued climb back up.

Man we get some blows in life dont we? I have had mine thats for sure - and everyone has a story to tell - perhaps more than one story - but when I hear of others who are just simply great people - like our Bob - going through a rough time it really hurts me, Bob matey you sure are one loved guy here so get your bum back here so we can talk knives Brother. :D

Thanks for the update Duncan. Looking forward to the return of the Biscuit! :)

In terms of the other discussion, I wonder if Andi is going to make Earl a Santa hat?! :D

Thanks for the update, Duncan! We are pulling for you Bob!! I wish you power, strength, and pure defiance to that which you will overcome :D

Thank you for the update Duncan. I sent Bob a text over the holidays just to remind him that "BigBiscuit" was in my thoughts and prayers!

Rambunctiousness in the house. My son thought he was getting a half Lab/half German Shepard, but he got an American Dingo about six weeks ago. Great pup. Gonna be a great dog.

At the river Thanksgiving Day.

Cute pup, leghog. I'd never heard of the American Dingo. They have an interesting history.

Thanks for the up date on Bob, Duncan.:thumb up:

A special prayer out today for him to be back with us soon. It's always darkest before the dawn, but the sun always rises again. Best wishes.

Carl.

Love the dog! But, that's quite a change-up, yes?

Did he change his mind before bringing the dog home, or was it a Surprise?

A surprise. Temperament-wise not too much of a change with the advantage to the American Dingo. These Dingos are by nature more shy even though more pack animals. Intelligence-wise not much of a change. Super smart. Size wise, yes. Though the dog will be tall, it should only weight 30-45 pounds (lots of leg but sleek body with high/tucked in belly). The most feral dog remaining in America. Interesting history, particularly with the Native Americans.

good looking pup -- I do not recall hearing about that breed before, either -- although he looks a LOT like our charlie-dog did.
